Hi, I have years of experience with cinestyle and I would assure you that cinestyle is amazing and here's how to use it. (this is very technical) 1st as being a log profile it is important to establish a base ISO for the profile since it is encoded in LOG, the dynamic range changes with changing the ISO (gain). The dynamic range of a LOG is wider compare to default profiles since luminance information is encoded in log (logarithm) and so the ISO/Gain is acting like a window (limited view) to see those luminance information (dynamic range) and so adjusting the ISO lower or higher from the ideal ISO value, makes it miss the other useful dynamic range and so, as your see in your image, it is lacking a lot of luminance information making it look very flattened and so as if it was very soft. 2nd I will just give you a short answer here, that the most ideal ISO for Cinestyle is 500. If you make it lower, you lost a lot of details in highlights and some in upper gray, and if you make it higher you lost a lot of information in the shadows or lower gray. Meaning to get the sharpest image and best dynamic range for this camera, you have to Fix/never change the ISO while in 500 and if you want to adjust exposure, better use ND filters or adjust your shutter speed/aperture if you have to. Also I can recommend adjusting the saturation on cinestyle to +3 because now that your image is in 4:2:0 8bit, better to minimize pushing colors in post to avoid banding or clipping of colors. I hope that although this is a 2 years old video, many more people will know about cinestyle and save a lot money to just using your trustee M50 while even getting high dynamic range image out of it. Been using Filmkit Pro since you posted this video and it's been great. Love that they have a LUT that does all the correction. Looks better than the picture profiles in the m50 that come standard.

So good to know I was not going crazy as I have not been able to get good color from the Cinestyle. This info could not have come at a better time as I research other profiles. FilmKit flat is nicely priced too - but I wish I knew that I could also have downloaded the M50 Filmmaking Guide at the same price that includes the profile and LUT as well. Great video and great info with the M50 as I learn to make this better - thanks for sharing the info as we all improve

Great Video👍🏼 I use the M50 and M6 using the Neutral Picture Style for video. If you are filming with the standard picture profile, you can grab your smartphone right away😉.

Cinestyle Works for me. 0 sharpness, 0 Contrast. 8-bit isnt the greatest but I try not to push the colours. I add sharpness in premiere (at about 30) and looks great.

Knowing that Cinestyle removes entirely sharpness in camera, it is meant to use an unsharp mask or any sharpness plugin in post (DeNoiser works quite great even if it’s supposed to focus on noise and not sharpness). Grading the blacks is also a bit tricky because it crushes sometimes the blacks too much, but...I used Cinestyle since the M50 is out, and I invite you to judge by yourself on my New York cinematics. I don’t use any Lut, no Rec709 grade...every clip graded by hand, a bit of patience...

Canon m50 produces heavy banding in the sky when filming in cinestyle. I'm not using any nd filter maybe high shutter could be the cause of this

Ok so I've pretty much tried all of the profiles out with heavy color grading. Except the first profile here. So thanks for the discount and the plug. I'm excited to try it. I've been using cinestyle. I've tried clog3 and it's too much compressing for the M50. Too much banding with grading. I'm a fan of the m50 even with my new camera the R6 coming in. My heart is a m50 lover.

Todd, thanks for your great M50 tutorial. Could you please explain how to set up Prolost Flat on the very current M50 firmware (1.1.0)? There are 3 substrings (Strength 0-7, Fineness 1-5, Threshold 1-5) under the Sharpness setting. Should we set all three all the way to the left or only Strength?

Can you please do a video on how to install the Canon Utility to get the picture style . I have been trying for days and it is not working.

I use one called drobiazcos C-LOG. Its the closest to the actual Canon LOG and it grades very easily too, recovers more highlights and shadow details and skin tones are very nice too. I recommend it + its free.

I usually use Cinestyle or a custom buillt PP from the Nutural PP, Cinestyle iis actually quite good but it is necessary to have Perfect exposure and WB. Otherwiise it wont work. but im Curios about Filmkit and wil give it a try

The FILMKIT colour grading difference is only marginally better in my opinon and I wonder if it is worth the effort for the majority of use cases for the M50.

Thx for the info about the filmkit profile. I've just bought an m50 and am collecting everything else I need for a beginner's kit. Your vid has almost sold me this profile. I hope it will let me spend mininum time grading in post if I use rec.709 LUT which looks good. The problem is: there's no way to apply your promocode :/

The LUT really clips the highlights in the clouds hardly IMO. Manually grading might work better.

What do you recommend for customizing Live Streaming ( no post editing ) using the Canon M50 Mark II for a picture style much like what we see in your series of videos here? In other words, without post editing as an option, what can I do to create some interest and avoid that 'sharpness' that is in the Standard setting you mentioned, only in live streaming footage? Hey Todd! I went ahead and bought FilmKit Flat and have been experimenting with it. I do agree with you that it has more clarity, even compared to the native profiles in the m50. What I’m struggling with is the color correction. The LUTs that come with it seem WAY too contrasty when applied to footage. What is it that you do to get a good color correction/grade with this flat profile?

Hi! This video is AWESOME. Subscribing RIGHT AWAY. Now, I have one question about the FilmKit Flat. I edit all my videos on Davinci Resolve, but I dont have the fastest laptop. So there is times that I have to deal with some lagging. Will this color profile slow down the process?

Does anyone know if the M50 can keep the Picture Profile you have saved between photo/video modes? I like to shoot both video and photos, and use the flat profile for video but I want to use Neutral or Standard for JPGs so I can do quick transfer to phone and send to friends etc, but every time I switch from video to photo mode I have to set the Picture Profile and sometimes I forget to, even when I remember it's very annoying having to do so every time, so I shoot JPG+RAW just in case...

On FCP did you mix the balance to a lower setting of the Filmkit Lut? Most LUTS is too aggressive.

Is it possible to install a color style via a memory card? I just bought a Filmkit Flat but my computer does not recognize the M50. I tried to change the USB cable, change the USB port, I tried on another computer but nothing helped. The M50 is not visible in the file explorer and in the device manager and the EOS utility does not see it. : /

Just buy a 10 bit full frame camera. These separate picture styles is kinda fake to be honest because it's on an 8 bit camera. It'll be like making a 1080p into 4k. It won't be that much real
