In 2007, the New Kids on the Block had a reunion tour that would turn out to be one of the most consequential events in pop culture history. To record their reunion album, the Kids got superproducer RedOne. For the musical number "I'm a Big Girl Now" they needed a female vocalist, so they got a local friend of producer RedOne, a New York art school student named Lady Gaga, mainly known at the time for the burlesque art deco show, the Lady Gaga Revue. They loved her vocals so much they used it on the track, and asked Lady Gaga to tour with them as their opening act. And now you know the rest of the story.

TRUE FACT: The song sounds so much like a Timbaland beat that it fooled Missy Elliot; she called Tim asking why he hid that beat away from her. Timbaland basically pleaded with her saying he didn't produce the song.

Keep in mind: Prince must've heard the cover since he was still around in the music biz. Knowing how he critiqued pop music of the time I'm sure he didn't approve of that cover.

I worked a week with NKOTB when they started their current tour. Honestly some of the hardest working, most motivated artists I've seen.

This was my SONG in middle school. Had no idea what he was saying, I just loved the beat. And his turtleneck. Listened to it again last year, gagged after he said "Taste you there". And cackled when he squeaked on the high note at the very end. Why did they keep that in the final cut?!?! I blame a jealous Baby Robin Thicke.
