Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos introduces the fantastical setting of Strixhaven University to Dungeons & Dragons, drawn from the multiverse of Magic: The Gathering. It also provides rules for creating characters who are students in one of its five colleges.
Characters can explore the setting over the course of four adventures, which can be played together or on their own. Each describes an academic year filled with scholarly pursuits, campus shenanigans, exciting friendships, hidden dangers, and perhaps even romance.
• Includes four brand new D&D adventures that can be played as stand-alones or woven together as a campaign from levels 1-10
• Adds a new playable race-an owlin, one of the owlfolk who study at the university
• Includes a bestiary of over forty magical creatures and NPCs

Okay, this seals it. I am even more excited for this book. I came up with some homebrew backgrounds for STX inspired by how the Ravnica and Theros books work and this sounds in line with what I homebrewed. So. Jazzed.

Feels like they are emphasizing Backgrounds as they de-emphasize Race in terms of mechanics. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the "5.5" update.

Idk where this sentiment comes from. Races have begun to become stronger with better more solid features to separate them from others in order to replace ASIs being what defines a race.

This one was particularly fun to watch. I wasn't really planning on picking up Strixhaven, but given the energy and enthusiasm I picked up from Todd and Jeremy's conversation (interview?), I've changed my mind and am going to get this one, after all. Also, that comment about putting a pin in those previous Unearthed Arcana releases... Hmm... Some good food for thought there.

I am very excited for more Feats, especially the improved Familiar Feat. I do wish there was a generic Improved Familiar Feat in the game. I will say I am a tiny bit disappointed we are not getting more spells. 5 spells seems so few, I wish we got 10. I worry it will feel like Fizban's in that it gave a little of everything but not enough of it.

D&D already did Magic schools, not just in Dragonlance, but much more detailed in "The Principalities of Glantri" for Mystara and AD&D's College of Magic. I recommend both for those who are interested in running a game like this with Strixhaven or in any other setting.

The UA kobold was utter crap honestly. it was a complete reversal change to the classic kobold to the point they were barely a kobold in mechanics. I'm glad it's gone, and I'm happy with the Volo's version.

Every non caster class needs a 1/3 spell casting subclass Monk even Barbarian which can use spells slots like paladins but not for damage but for added effects to attacks when they are raging. Because, magic adds o lot of fun to non caster and gives extra options and utility and now the feat, races, and even backgrounds gives extra spells. Feels bad that you can’t play your favorite class with this type of flavor with out multi classing. The 4e monk and fey wild barbarian don’t cut it, I mean as more books come out classes and subclass with spell lot get better with more options, when was the last time they added more elements power to the 4e monk or way to add more power as the books come out, fey and shadow touch are cool but after the free use per day their no option to spend ki to recast it as with spell slots. We need 1/3 caster for every non caster class with fun magical ability like the fighter and rouge.

@@Logan-ef8hq They're not too different from the Volo's version of those races, so these could easily be scouting flavor adjustment to the existing versions. They could also be shadow tests for non-Goblin/Kobold races for unannounced, even new, settings. On another note, I think there's a fair chance Thri-Keen won't end up in a Spelljammer or Multiverse book.

Good idea with the feat instead of the mess that was the subclass choices. They seemed like nightmare for those using digital character sheets. Not a huge fan of MtG anymore, but would be interesting to play in a Strixhaven setting.

12:43 "People loved the Owlfolk in UA and has made it into the book in a form very close to how it appeared in UA." LIES! - No Nimble Flight to stop yourself from falling. No Magic Sight to cast Detect Magic as a ritual. Flying Speed was reduced from 'equal to walking speed' to 30 (no matter what) AND they added the Aarakocra weakness of not being able to wear medium or heavy armor if flying. Owlin isn't anything like the UA Owlfolk... it's more like an Aarakocra 1.5

I play a lot of spellcasters anyways so the book having a prebuilt magic school excites me, my DM already said she will be running this campaign for us. The 5 backgrounds gives me so much variety for magical backgrounds set in the Forgotten Realms, sure I could go with a sage/acolyte/etc but I've always wanted there to be a "student" background since it fits so well with magical classes (Especially bard and wizard!). I can see myself making a character for each of the Strixhaven colleges.

@@summermermaidstar756 same here i play 95% wizards with the sage background or a custom one that gives arcana, alchemist tools and two languages. But still sad that the lorehold wiuard died. Wizard finally had a pet class even if it was kind of unfocused at level 10 and 14. we will see how the feats work :)

I guess part of this spells will be included in the feat: Lorehold: knock, locate object speak with dead, spirit guardians arcane eye, stone shape destructive wave, legend lore Quandrix: enlarge/reduce, spike growth aura of vitality, haste control water, freedom of movement 9th circle of power, passwall Whitebloom: lesser restoration, ray of enfeeblement revivify, vampiric touch blight, greater restoration antilife shell, mass cure They start at second level so i guess it will be a free but prediterment 1st level, 2nd and 3rd level spell which could be good if there are good sets or worse then fey touched cause fey touched gives good spells and has +1.

@@heykak hmm but when i check again the features its not even math its physic majors? I of course had enough matrix math to land an spaceship but thats more cause my specific university was confusing our subject with aplied math. Other swiss universities have not nearly the same amount of math, especially the „best“ economics uni we have even ignores the subject almost thus i would say unless its usual to have that much math its not that fitting? Really sad you could have made puns, key figures, hedging, financial statement, supply and demand, invsible hand, engles curve, game theory… the possibilies for features…

Well, it is smart business to offer an adventure module for a young adult market. I mean in their novels they have always had their standard Nobel lines and then done a younger reader novel line so for games this make sense too. All that being said this is not for me. I like 5E mechanics but the lighter toned adventures (Wild Beyond the Witch Light and this) are just not me. Even as a young adult I liked more darker themed content. WOTC modules like Curse of Strahd, Rime of the Frost Maiden or more standard fair like Ghost of Saltmarsh are more my style. Still, I can purchase piece meal some of the more mechanical options to use in my game via D&D Beyond but purchasing this book is not for me. I am sure WOTC will produce something of interests next year. They have already said some classic campaigns would be returning. So that is something to look forward too.

All that extra stuff they talk big about like piety and the ravnica guilds are still not in dnd beyond. A big central peice of players characters just not avail to be easily tracked or modified. So with the current trend those new spells from the background wont be added into dnd beyond to function correctly.

If the school is for young adults then my only question is this, why is there a school dance? Parties, sure. But a prom style dance? I do hope the book explains such, as the foundation of this is that they are young adults so if stuff like proms are slipping in, what other stuff have slipped in? Don't get me wrong, a book for students ala Harry Potter is cool but if the goal is to get away from that, the book should keep on message.

Those of us who weren't interested weren't required to participate (similar to high school) and, surprisingly, did not, which I believe *is* the adult response.

@@mekagengar2580 The adult thing to realise is that people can enjoy dancing at any point in their life, and that institution-hosted dances are not inherently juvenile.

@@deffdefying4803 Oh, look, a strawman to make an argument. No one is saying adults don't enjoy dancing but the issue here is the emphasis placed on the whole thing by Crawford that this is for adults. Yet they talk about school dances, besties and frenemies. All terms often associated to High School aged people at best. Originally, I had no issue with this as it wasn't advertised as being for adults. I assumed this was a Harry Potter situation with young teens having a magic school life. But now they have come out and said, this is for adults because it's "irresponsible" to have kids do all those Harry Potter things. So I now have concerns on what else snuck in that leans more towards young teens versus young adults. In either case, I did pre-order it prior to this reveal. And if it is a bit too kiddy for my tastes, I will simply make the ages of the students be in line with young teens instead of young adults. Or remove such and keep it for young adults. But if you want to relive your High School/etc days (or lack thereof) with D&D, have at thee. Becuase the writers clearly wanted to, so you should be able to as well.

I really want them to stop putting Source material in adventure books. I shouldn't have to buy adventure books for a single race or class option.

It's not an adventure module, it's a setting book, with everything in it you need to run a particular setting. In this case, that setting is the Strixhaven college.

@@Pancakeli i know, i'm saying generally, they did it with witchlight, and a few other books this year. New spells, new subclasses, new races; put into module books, even though Tasha's was also put out not long ago.

@@greenhawk3796 a few this year? What books came out this year? Candlekeep, ravenloft, witchlight, Fizban's, and then this? So that's one book? Or is there more than witchlight that is an adventure but has player stuff? Ravenloft is a setting, Fizban's is a sourcebook for dragon stuff, candlekeep didn't have player options.

@@Nildread youre right. Witchlight was the first. I guess my actual issue is that there's too many separate sourcebooks coming out. I actually thought strixhaven was another adventure book.

@@greenhawk3796 I think that's a confusion because of how the setting books have been coming with atleast one adventure as an introduction to the setting. I find them pretty useful. But if you look on Amazon it's advertised as d&d/MTG adventure book. But the ravnica book is advertised as an adventure/setting book so that might just be an Amazon issue. My understanding was that it would be a bit like candlekeep though? But with more setting stuff/mechanics than candlekeep had. Maybe it'll look a bit like the wildemount book that had more than one starting adventure but was still a setting book. But that's kind of how all their setting books have been, atleast one adventure in the book. I'm also kind of confused by your "too many source books" when people have been asking for more campaign settings and more source books, especially when your stance is that you don't want an official adventure. How are they going to make money if they don't make books? And you don't have to buy all their books either. This one might not be for you and that's fine. There's probably better 3rd party material that fits your needs more specifically.
