I wanted a truly useful toolkit I could toss in a bag and bring anywhere so I built a pretty over the top kit based around the Leatherman Surge with bit kits, extender, extra t-shank metal and wood saws, and a complete socket set from 8-19mm, all in a small carrying case. It's not something you'd belt carry but it's tiny and easy to keep in the car or toss in a bag and be ready for a ton of situations. Amazon links are affiliate and support the channel.

You may already know but SKINTH SOLUTIONS. They make all kinds of pouches. Anything you want all sizes. Edit: those camera bags fall apart I've tried them. Now don't get me wrong I've not bought any skinth pouches but it's all Ive found that is a good custom option that hand made for gear by a guy who couldn't find what he wanted so he made it his self.

You may already be aware of this, but there are these cool sockets I bought off Amazon callled "Gator Grip". There are two different sized versions, both USA made. They work in a pinch and I carry mine with me everywhere alongside my SOG multitool (has a standard bit holder center mounted, which is nice). Just to warn you, they are are awesome, but they aren't a replacement for my SK set, nor the Wright set I inherited from my grandfather. I also don't much care if I lose one of my Gator Grips.

good kit. I suggest maybe a small many 16's crescent that opens to 3/4" and a Japanese crescent wrench. I often carry those two and have some other tools and I fix multi-million dollar machines sometimes with just what's in my pockets. I have been looking for a new multi tool. and based upon this review I will now carry the surge in my EDC fix most shit kit. . *thank you*.

Perfect, compact kit. If you're not too particular about the blade sheath being tied up along with the bit kits, you can just keep that separate and lay it diagonally to avoid that extra long wood blade from poking through the case 😉

I just ordered most of what was on your list. I needed a small kit that could do 80-90% of jobs I do at work, and fit in a go bag. Thanks. Edit: I just received my Surge and I am absolutely in Awe of how sharp the blade came. I don’t think I’ve ever received a knife that would shave hair out of the box. The fit and finish of the tool is pristine. For 3/4 of the transformation it is smooth, last quarter is where everything tightens into place. There is absolutely no wiggle or flex. It is a straight up beast of a tool. It fit perfectly into a leather pancake holster I bought for a Gerber Suspension. I barely notice the extra weight between Suspension and Surge when it’s on my Kore Gun belt. Although I wanted the Black and stainless version, I have to say the all stainless is a beauty. It really is nice tool of marvel and ingenuity. My only regret is not buying it years sooner. But I suspect this will last me into my old age.

I think you’ve got it a little bit twisted, sir. Leatherman does not make professional tools. They are intended to be more of a last resort in emergency situations. I’m an electrician and would never use my leatherman on a job. Professionals use dedicated tools. Seeing a fellow electrician or any other tradesman use one of these on a job would be absolutely cringe-worthy.

OMG. This is exactly the type of tool set that I want for EDC. I can pull out the Surge for actual carry but have the kit for bike rides, hiking, backpacking, etc. More importantly, I can get a bicycle multi-tool separately and bike repair kit to put in my rack for longer rides on my trike. Amazing. I will start gathering the items now. The primary reason for the Surge is the replaceable saw blades. You can find sets with different teeth per inch for differing projects or results. Adding in the fire starter was genius. I might even find that replacement whistle from the outdoor version to pop in there in case I ride over a cliff.

I thoroughly enjoyed your in depth review on how much the Surge is capable of doing with a few extra add on's, such as saw blades and sockets. Plus the camera bag as a handy tool bag. Anything more would really defeat the purpose of a pocket carry multi-tool. Next level: Snap-On Top cab and Leatherman's world beater. The inbuilt air compressor and TIG welder.

I too use camera bags for mini-BOBS or Go-Bags. Another option is to use Thule bags which you sort have considered at the beginning of your video but their brand are thicker and higher quality. I use one to keep all my diabetic supplies and another for writing supplies but they would great for a Surge toolkit. First aid, fire starting, and water filtration kits are other important things to put into these types of camera bags.

One difference that I will make is that I would carry two pouches on my belt. One with the leatherman and nothing else.. for a quick grab or snip or slice, and another bulkier pouch with all those great accessories that are so necessary, but only on a daily or weekly basis.

excellent video Todd! I am a long time surge fan, it's got me through many a job. One technique I use is opening the tool halfway into an L-shape when using the screwdriver. It can give some good leverage. The only thing that finally broke it was opening coconuts in the Philippines! First the knife to cut off the husk, then I would use the awl to punch a hole and then the saw to cut a window to drink the coconut water inside. Even then it didn't break fully just got loose and they still replaced it for free.

My Surge years ago came with the older stretchy pouch that is a combo of both those newer ones and with more compartments but no bigger. I have all shown there, minus the sockets, plus a small set of 1/4'' bits with a ratchet wrench in the front, another Skeletal Leatherman on a side pocket for 2 pliers, a 4'' adjustable wrench and a firestarter on the other side, My Surge slides in an out easily, I carry my flashlight separately, my buddy loves it.That's a cool setup you have,

In the pockets I have a flashlight and a small marker. As for the bits, I glow it back to back and put it on an old leatherman blast sleath. I ware two sleaths on my belt almost every day and i'm always ready to go.

Hmmmm, my Surge that I bought at Bass Pro shop about 2 years ago came with the leather sheath that has pockets on both sides as well as a slot inside to keep a few extra saw-blades and a bit kit! I keep a little flashlight and a Fisher space pen in the two side pockets. With a pen, all the tools on the surge, and a flashlight it's like the ultimate EDC tool for most uses. :) Leatherman makes some great stuff. With how many times I've been super glad to have it with me it was totally worth the $95 it cost. And I have a Micra on my ketchain, which comes in handy super often if I don't have the Surge with me.

This is what I’m trying to gradually do with my Surge, too. I love the T-shank adapter, the bit kit, but I’d also love to have a ratcheting adapter. I tried to make one but it broke during use. I would also like the toolkit to be able to work with my lighter, and more often carried SuperTool 300M. The 300M has the bit kit adapter, a pry bar, and a very nice awl/carbon scraper. It also comes in a coyote scales, with black tools color scheme. It is meant to be a poor man’s MUT.

I enjoyed this very much. I am not alone in this world. I am similarly obsessive in this regard. It all started for me with the Choinard (Patagonia) expedition sewing kit (maybe 1980). I had several over the years, and then started making them myself. The little kit became a substantially larger one that covers a wider range of field repairs, but it is modular so that it can be separated and used based on the specific activity. I also put together a miniature tool kit specific to my bicycle with the help of the Snap-on tool guy and Park Tools that I have been using for 20 years. Thanks for the great content, but now I am thinking of how to improve my kit(s) based on what you posted - here we go again...

Yes I have one ! It cost $120.00 with belt seath ! Extra for any accessory attachments! Like for different types of screws. And for the most part they are guaranteed for life! So long as there's no abuse, meaning using the tool other than what it's meant to be used for! The only problem is , you got to have two sets. Because if you're only own one set, and you lose one, you don't have none! But if you have two, and lose one, you still have one!

Been there got the t-shirt. My solution was two pouches. The standard pouch for the surge and a second leatherman pouch (small) for the accessories and extender. I have a small flashlight too (v. usefull!). As I have more than one leatherman this split works really well. Ok, it does take up space on the belt but then you don't need both all the time. I don't have sockets. It seems to me that if sockets are required then you're going beyond a multitool and looking at a larger tool kit.

Great video helped in making my decision. I was able to get everything in the original Leatherman sheath minus the socket set. I did get the bits, the extender, the extra saw blades plus the wood saw blade and the four inch ratchet. No problems with fit and ease of extracting everything out.

I did the same thing. But I found a nice case with Mollie straps and I added a first aid kit and I put my blades in a plastic tube with a little oil.

Have you looked at Universal sockets? You might find one or two of those in different sizes would cover all socket sizes you'd need and save on space and weight.

Thats a good idea, I wonder how much strength the surge bit holder has, that's what worries me

@@happytrails5342 Not sure if anyone's stress tested it, I'd imagine the failure point would be a ratchet mechanism or perhaps if there was any play between the sprung pieces within the socket. Mine are very tightly packed so feel very positive when in use.

@happytrails5342 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathangutteridge2376 yeah? If I used just the but extender no ratchet, I feel like the failure would be in the H shaped bottom of the bit holder. But still feels crazy strong

@@happytrails5342 I think you're probably right, plus I don't think using it that way would apply anywhere close to enough torque to risk failure

Great kit setup. Plenty of great ideas for my own kit build. the only thing I’ll change is swapping the sockets for a small 100mm Adjustable spanner - if I need sockets then a proper toolkit might be the go. But great video thank you for sharing!

The stealth you ordered off Amazon is made for the smaller leatherman tools. The XL is made for the larger tools like the Surge.
