Thanks Andy i have one last question after watching your video regarding the hole view update from Shotscope. Presumably as i ordered this watch yesterday i wont need to go through turning off the bluetooth as described in your latest post?

Hey. Yes, you may still have to do that as your watch will likely have been manufactured with the older firmware, so once you connect it, it will probably tell you that you need to update the firmware. Just update the firmware, forget the device and re-add as I did in that video, and you should be good to go!

I just recently received the Shot Scope V5 and haven't even had the chance to use it yet for golfing. Instead, I've been using it as an everyday watch and I'm glad that you mentioned that it automatically shuts off after 30 min. of inactivity as I couldn't find that info anywhere else. I also ordered those screen protectors too. My first impression is that I wish the display was a lot brighter, but I'm getting used to the screen now. Shot Scope is also in the process of adding a course in my area that wasn't listed, so that's nice of them after my request. Overall, as my first golf watch and as something that I want to wear everyday, I'm quite happy with the V5.

Good choice in ordering the V5. I think it's a great offering and I'm sure that you'll enjoy using it on the golf course too. The auto shut off is a great idea, especially for those who pop the watch into their bag and forget about it! Glad to hear Shot Scope helped you out with the course update too. It's rare for a course not to be on the database but sounds like they've sorted you out. I'm about to release a new video with top tips for V5 users, so be sure to check that out when it's released, Peter. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment - enjoy the golf season ahead. Play well!

Thanks very much for this review of both. I have the X5 and before that the V3. I have enjoyed the X5 and with each update new features make it a better watch. I have not yet been able to use the X5 watch this season with the hole map so I am looking forward to that new feature. I had been interested to see if an upgrade was worthwhile from the X5 but based upon your review I see no need to at this stage simply due to battery issues. I rarely use the touch screen anyway and simply rotate the crown button and click in to make it easier than having to touch the watch face.

You're very welcome, Tom - glad it was useful and hopefully you enjoyed this one. I thought doing a detailed video on both would help both new and existing users, like yourself. As mentioned in the video, they are both very similar and both offer great features. If, like me, you tend to use the crown to operate the watch and if the 2 round battery isn't essential, then upgrading really isn't worth it at this stage in my opinion. If buying from scratch as a new user then I think the V5 is a better option, but only just. Both are great watches, though. Enjoy the golf season ahead and play well!

I have a V3, an X5, and now have added a V5. The V3 is clunky looking, has a bit of a clumsy interface, and it misses a lot of shots, but it has a long battery life (enough for at least 2 rounds), and it just works. The X5 is much improved in terms of not missing many shots, but the X5 battery life is abysmal. I never ran out in a single round, but i did get under 10% left a couple of times. Also, sometimes, for no explicable reason, after I charged it the night before, I get to the course only to find 0% battery life, requiring me to pull out the trusty V3, which never lets me down. I had a love-hate relationship with the X5. While I liked that it didn't miss many shots, I despised the touch screen. The touch screen was locked whenever I wanted to use any watch feature, so I had to unlock it many, many times per round. The only time it was unlocked by default was when I was on the green, the one time I absolutely did not want it unlocked! I regularly put my hand behind my back to read putts, or when watching others putt, which would cause the X5 to record 2-putt pars, and record the pin as being at some strange location. Worse, the touch screen did not work at all in the rain. I rate both the V3 and the X5 about 2.6 stars out of 5. Both were usable, but flawed. What about the V5? I have used it for two rounds now, and I absolutely love it! It looks good. It has all the best features of the V3 and the X5, and none of the bad features of either. Like the V3, it has good battery life. Like the X5, it doesn't miss many shots. Unlike the V3 it keeps score and has graphical pictures of the holes. Unlike the X5, there is no screen to constantly unlock, and it doesn't record erroneous putting information. I love everything about the V5, and I have no complaints about it whatsoever. I give the V5 a solid 5 stars. The only way that they can improve on it is to make another generational leap in the accuracy of the sensors so that the V5 misses no shots whatsoever. Great job, ShotScope!

Thanks for the open and honest review of the three watches Carl. I too have all three and have used Shot Scope products since they were released back in 2016 (V1). I think they've come a long, long way since then, and whilst they're devices aren't perfect, for the money and range of features, they damn near are. I can't say I've quite experienced the above battery issues with the X5 (going to 0%) and the major firmware update shortly after release definitely fixed that. For anyone reading the above comment, you can turn the auto lock off for both general watch mode and golf mode, which would prevent it from locking during your round. In truth, I tend to leave the X5 unlocked at all times and haven't really noticed any issues in the 40+ rounds I've tracked. Not too sure about the watch recording strokes on the green whilst it was behind you back and that's not something I've experienced but something to look out for, I guess. I do still think the X5 is a good golf watch and does pretty much everything a golfer needs. Whilst not perfect, it is a decent offering and in my opinion deserves a bit more than 2.6, but each to their own. I do however, agree with your assessment of the V5. It really is a great offering from Shot Scope and my go to watch for the foreseeable. In terms of next steps from Shot Scope, if they do go back to a touch screen watch, which I suspect they'll go for in the future, I'm sure they'll know that a) the screen has to be much more responsive and b) can't be a burden on the battery like the X5. Thanks for dropping a comment, Carl, and good luck for the golf seasons ahead - play well!

@@AndysGolfBlog My problems with the X5 on the green were related to personal habits. When lining up a putt, or while carefully watching another person putt to see how there putt breaks, and sometimes when I bend down to repair a ball mark on the green, I have a tendency to put my left hand behind my back. Since the watch was on the pin collect screen, it would record that as if I had tapped the screen. It was a constant battle for me to remember not to put my hand behind my back. And, that's the problem. I should be focused on golf, and/or focused on enjoying myself, not focused on changing my personal habits to accommodate a watch. I didn't know that you could turn off the autolock, and if I had known I could, I probably would have turned it off. The only time I would have wanted it autolocked was when I was on the green, which was the one time it couldn't be locked. As for the watch going to zero, I suspect mine has an intermittent short in it. It drops some overnight almost every night, even though powered off. Usually the drop is small, but some days it doesn't drop at all, and other days it drops a lot. That does bring me to a minor peeve about the X5 that also persists in the V5: When not in a round, there seems to be no way to check the battery left other than to connect it to the charger.
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I do agree about changing habits as you don't want to do that in the same way as you don't want to change your routine just for technology. Interesting point about the battery dropping on the X5. I'll power mine up and see if I can stop anything similar. Good news - you can check the battery on both your X5 and V5 both in golf and general watch mode. In General watch mode (when unlocked), swipe right on the X5 screen to view your battery. On the V5, press the bottom left button to view the step/battery screen. In golf mode, both watches allow battery life to be viewed from the menu under battery. Hope the above tips helped. I'm going to produce a full user tutorial for both of these watches soon!

Sorry to hear that. I’ve used my X5 to capture over 40 rounds since it was released and in all honestly, think it’s much better than the V3. I don’t think the touch screen has been great, as mentioned in this video, and it does struggle in the rain, but so does my iPhone. Personally, I’ve mainly tended to use the crown to navigate the X5 which has worked well. Aside from the responsiveness of the screen and the battery not coping with two full rounds (not a big issue for me), I think the X5 is a decent watch. Not perfect but definitely better than the V3 in terms of looks and features in my opinion.

Same experience I had, it restarted during the rain. Plus I suspect that my decision to go recycle friendly and buy an ex-demo left me with a specimen that didn't manage to last even 18 holes. That's a shame about your experience with the X5. You should still have gotten at least a 1 year warranty with that, though, which should have covered the battery issue. Whilst the X5 battery isn't as solid as the V5, I've always managed to comfortably use it for one full round, usually having around 50% left. To go for from 100% to 5% in one round wouldn't be right at all. It's encouraging that you still like what Shot Scope has to offer. They've made huge progress since I began using the V1 in 2016, and continue to go from strength to strength. I suspect they' learn from the X5 (which they clearly have with the V5), with the future upgrade to the X5 being a much bigger improvement.

Andy - Do you know if the Shot Scope putter sensor needs a special attachment for Super Stroke putter grips? I am a former Arccos user and I needed to purchase a special attachment for the putter sensor due to the SS grip.
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog Ай бұрын
Hi Brian, The tag that will be supplied will need to be modified to work with the SS putter. I've previously owned one and I cut the screw off and glued it to the top, on top of the weight. Instead of gluing, you could try a little bit of silicone sealant or 3M tape. Shot scope also sell a set of 3 putter tags, 2 pre cut and one normal for £19.99: bit.ly/4arTCtg. You can save 15% using my code 'ANDYSGOLF' if you are ordering them. The two pre-cut tags come with 3M tape I believe, so can just be stuck on. The only other solution is to go tagless, but put the watch into manual tagging mode. You can then press the button on the watch when at the location of each putt. Not quite as handy as auto putting but saves you altering or buying new tags. Personally, I'd recommend trying to modify or buying the tags though as I think automatic tracking is far more appealing than needing to manually tag putts - but at least you now know of both options. Let me know if you have any other questions at all. Cheers, Andy

Hey Andy, good video again. Did you ever make a video on the shot scope stats, in particular putting? My make percentage for 1-2 meter putts is at 36% but according to my hcp 15 target average should be 57%. Isn't that awfully high for that hcp bracket? I was thinking, isn't the way Shot scope records putts (manual or not) not influencing this statistic big time, or (god forbid) the phenomena of 4 foot gimme's? Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't rule out that I am simply godawful from anywhere between 4 and 10 feet.... :-)
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 2 ай бұрын
Hey pbode1. I haven't managed to make on yet because I have been working my way through Shot Scope's e-books to try and make sure I understand the data a good bit more clearly before I try to interrogate it. I've just checked mine and for my last 10 I'm 66%, which is still less than the benchmark for both 5 and 10 HC in terms of strokes gained, so even I have some work to do. Obviously this strokes gained data is pulled from existing Shot Scope users, so it really depends on how people edit their rounds. What you might find is that quite a lot of users place their final putt to around 5-6 ft then just leave it there, whereas, they might have been closer but just haven't zoomed in. Therefore, this will show as a successful 5-6ft putt, rather than perhaps a 3ft putt. I don't think the recording method (manual or automatic) makes any difference because that's just the mechanism for capturing the stroke. What is probably more likely to affect things are a) the above user movement of putt locations and b) the accuracy of GPS technology. In truth, I've never worried too much about benchmarking when it comes to putting, and tend to really focus on my own data, as I know that I have done my best to make it as accurate as possible. Personally, my main focus is reducing my overall number of putts per round, reducing my 3 putts and increasing my % for putts within 6ft. This article here might be of interest: clubhouse.swingu.com/statistics/understanding-stats-key-putting-stats-by-handicap/#:~:text=Key%20Putting%20Stats%20To%20Know,Putt%20Percentage%20From%20Key%20Distances

The X5 desperately needs the rain mode update. I've said this since it was released. It's the only thing that lets this great watch down for me.. I've played well over 50+ rounds with it.. and that would probably be 80+ rounds if it worked with rain droplets on the screen instead of freezing. It's major big let down if you play in all weathers like myself (especially uk weather). Other than that the watch has been amazing.. personally I've had no missed shot data, gps works fast and finds courses easily.. and the firmware uodates are always quick and easy to follow. The new course maps are spot on too, and even showed the new bunkers we've had. 👏 👏. It's just that lack of bloody rain mode.. c'mon shotscope sort it out 👍

Yeah, this pretty much echoes my personal experience from 40+ rounds. Generally, from what I’ve seen in terms of user issues on my channel or the support group, many of them come down to user error, especially with tracking. You’re right about the rain issues. Hopefully they do produce a resolution soon!

@AndysGolfBlog I agree it's definitely down to user error on missed shots, and the setup for adding putter shots seems to confuse a lot of users. I've resorted to wearing an 80s style sweat wrist band over mine when it rains 😆.. it helps keep the rain off the face until I'm back under a brolly.. but I look like a tool wearing it, haha.

I Recently purchased the V5, initially i had issues connecting the watch to the app. I must admit it was so frustrating that I nearly sent it back for a refund!! There is a knack to get it to connect each time. 1. Close the app, turn off watch, turn off Bluetooth. 2. In this order: Turn on watch, Then turn on Bluetooth, Then open app and connect. So far in my experience it connects every time using this method (I was instructed to do this method by the shot scope help team who have been fantastic and very responsive). Although the touch screen on the X5 seems like a great idea it was a fail, the buttons on the side are far more users friendly on the V5.

Hi Andy I asked a question about distance measures on the X5 watch on the Shotscope Facebook page, but something went wrong and froze me out, probably me? Anyway, I tried to upload a screenshot from my app, which showed using the watch from our range bay at my home course. I had just bought the X5 so was logging in (play golf ) at my course. Went on the range and hit a 100 balls as usual. Then noticed later on that it had recorded a shot from the range, but from the first tee to the range bay, then another shot from the range bay onto the 1st Green and 2 putts, hence my original question on Facebook. Can you explain, please?
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 4 күн бұрын
Hi Tony. Essentially, the X5 should only be used on the golf course and not on the range, especially when warming up or hitting balls. If I hit balls before I play then I don’t initiate my round until I’m on the first tee. If you do start a round early then do some warming up on the driving range or practise area, make sure you pause the watch from the menu before hitting balls, then unpause when on the first tee before you hit your tee shot. That way, no shots made before you play your round will be captured. For your round that hasn’t been captured correctly, specifically the first hole, you’ll be able to edit it to match how you actually played the hole using the desktop or mobile editing tools. I have two video tutorials explaining how to use both of those tools in case you want to check them out. Hope that makes sense! Cheers, Andy

Andy Thanks for your swift response. My original question was can you use the watch to show distances on the range? People commented on the Facebook page that you couldn't. But as I stated it did show the shot from the range onto the green. I know it was by accident, me not pausing the watch. But why can this not be part of the shotscope system, allowing practice distance shots?
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 4 күн бұрын
People on the forum would have answered 'no' because they'd likely be thinking of using the device on a standard driving range (which people sometimes ask). Due to the way the device works, if you can't collect your ball at the range then the device can't work out how far you've hit it. That said, I've used my X5 a few times at my home course's driving range by entering GPS only mode (this works because the driving range is within 1KM of my course), hitting my balls and activating the 'Last Shot' option. I'd then walk to where the rough average distance would be for those balls and write down the distance displayed on the watch. In truth, the watch is designed to tell you how far you hit your clubs over a period of time, so it's actually a lot easier just to play a good few rounds and then see what your performance average is across your bag. It's worth noting that these yardages are always going to full shot yardages with rollout and not carry, and rely on GPS accuracy which is around 6-10 ft. If you're looking to be really anal about club distances, booking a club gapping session on a simulator or getting a device like a FlightScope Mevo will provide more accurate distances, and will give you carry numbers and full shot. Hope this helps!

Hi Andy my question is unrelated to this video but i would like some guidance please. I have today received my x5 Shotscope watch and i want to ask about the tags that are supplied with the watch. I have them connected and they are reading fine. There are two clubs in question ie my 5w and 7w which do not have a corresponding tag, but i have allocated 3w tag assigned to 5w and H2 assigned to 7w. When i perform a tag read they are read as 3w and H2. My query is when i take to the course will the watch in the case of 3w and H2 display 5w and 7w or 3w and H2. Sorry if i have confused you but i simply want the watch to display the correctly assigned clubs to each tag.
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 2 ай бұрын
The Tag Read option will only read what is on the tag, not what you've assigned the tag to in the My Bag area of your account. So, in you case, your H2 tag will show on the watch screen as H2 when correctly tagged, not 7W. However, when you go to access your performance data within your dashboard after your round, the H2 tag will show as 7W, provided you've assigned that. If at a later stage you decided to swap your H2 tag from your current 7W to an make/model of 7W, just make sure you go into My Bag again and re-assign the H2 tag to the new 7W club. What will then happen is when you view your performance data, you'll see two 7W's in different colours (to allow you to distinguish and compare). You can also filter by active clubs which will only show clubs currently assigned and in use. I hope this makes sense. It's a great question on quite a confusing topic. I think I'll maybe make a video to explain this for others.

@@AndysGolfBlog Thank you for your help. I dont suppose Shotscope can provide a 5w and 7w tags?
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 2 ай бұрын
No, they don’t do them but in truth, there’s no need as they give you two extra tags. As long as you know which tag is assigned to which club, it doesn’t really matter. You could use your 4i tag on your 9i and it would still work fine, with the exception of the putter which is the only tag the P tag can be used with.

Hi do you think the X5 will be replaced with a newer version before i purchase one. Also when will the issue in the rain be resolved?
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 2 ай бұрын
Hey Raj. There's little to no chance of a direct X5 upgrade being released this year as far as I'm aware seeing as Shot Scope usually release their products around March/April ahead of the new season. No update on the rain issue but Shot Scope are working on it so would expect to see something released in the next month or so, maybe two. I guess it all comes down to when you're looking to purchase but I hope that this video has helped you to be better informed and hopefully see the main differences between the two. Thanks, Andy

I have had my V5 for over a week now, but haven't managed to get it working properly yet. I have been in touch with Shot Scope but thay haven't managed to sort it yet. When I switch it on, it asks me to connect it to the Shot Scope Mobile app. I have the app as I have been using the V3, but the V5 doesn't appear in the list of watches in the app. I don't know how to bypass this stage so I can use it as a watch, and I obviously haven't been able to use it on the course yet. Very frustrating. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Sorry to hear that, Mark. That’s very, very strange. I assume you’ve tried logging out of the app, fully uninstalling it then, reinstalling? If not, I’d suggest doing that. Also, other possibly suggestions would be a) to try installing the app on another mobile or tablet if you have one and b) trying to create a new account to see if the options can be found within there. I’d be interested to know what you see under ‘more’ > ‘add new device’ and ‘watches’ if the X5 isn’t listed there?

@@AndysGolfBlog I have another question. I am replacing a V3 with the V5. Do you know if the tags from the V3 that are already on my clubs will be recognised by the V5? Thanks

I'd suggest you swap the tags out if you can. V3 tags are 1st generation, V5 tags are second generation which means that they have increased screw length, a better fit for a range of grips and they've got an improved range. Your V3 tags will still work but Shot Scope does recommend changing them. No need to reassign or do anything within the MyBag area of the app if you do decide to change them. Hope that helps!

The screen protector that you show in the video is way too big for the X5. They are cut to the size of the bezel not the screen.
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog 2 ай бұрын
We must be talking about different protectors then I'm afraid. I literally ordered and fitted these same protectors to both my X5 and V5, and they fit perfectly over the screen and do not touch the bezel. These are the protectors I ordered: amzn.to/3WeFrDT
