The sounds of a Tokay Gecko making loud calls at night in Thailand's rainforest. Unlike most lizards, geckos can be quite vocal and depending on the species make a range of different sounds. The call of the Tokay Gecko is a particularly good example! This sound has no doubt startled many a sleeping backpacker in South-east Asia! Their explosive series of 'to-kay' croaks are especially loud at 3am perched on a bedroom wall a couple of metres from your head!
The Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) is a very large, colourful species of gecko found throughout South-east Asia as well as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and parts of north-east India. The natural habitat of this species is rainforest, but it adapts well to disturbed environments and is commonly found in buildings in villages and towns within its range. This species is known as 'Tắc Kè' in Vietnam.
The audio in this video was recorded in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand.

Yes, they seem to survive quite well in urban environments. They love moths and other insects attracted to lights around homes and buildings!

@@WildAmbience They are invasive here in Florida. I’ve had a dozens in my heavily populated neighborhood! The Tokays would jump on the window quite obnoxiously in the middle of the night and call right next to my head lol Managed to catch a few individuals which are still healthy and grow very large even in such a different environment! Really incredible ability to adapt! And I have witnessed some of the native snakes or raptors preying upon them. All within my small backyard on the opposite side of the planet from their native range.

Why I am asking, we are collecting these advertisement calls of Tokays to reveal variation in their vocalization in relation to their geographical distribution and environmental factors within the citizen science project Geckording - will be happy for these sounds from your region - please check the website: geckording.eu/

This is the signature sound of Southeast Asia. Probably one of the few reptiles that have a loud enough voice to create a soundscape. I would like to keep a pair of them to listen to them. Unfortunately they need a lot of space if you have more than one.

It’s nice to hear them among the noises of the Tokay Gecko’s natural environment! The ones I know of in Florida make a surprisingly diverse range of calls and even seemingly “communicate” with the birds from time to time. They’re super fascinating!

not sure what you mean that they don't disturb anyone. I am on samal island on a resort. It rained in the night. At 3 in the morning, I suddenly hear a loud call knowing that there is some insect on the other bed. Searching frantically for half hour, found it behind our curtain at the wall. The call was so loud, it was scary, almost like a call to mark his turf.
