Thanks for the support :) Yes Tokyo public transportation is so efficient and can get you anywhere but it's seriously confusing at first with all those lines and companies! Took me a while to get used to and I still get a bit insecure when I have to use a new line like when I took Odakyu for the first time... At least there are always tons of signs around but sometimes that can get overwhelming too!

I usually recommend people to rent a pocket wifi instead of getting a phone or sim card since most people just need access to internet, but I will probably address this in an upcoming Q&A since some other people have also asked about getting a phone in Japan, so stayed tuned! (*^▽^*) Oh also, a lot of airbnb places in Japan provide a free pocket wifi, so if that's what you are using airbnb to book your accommodation, you might want to keep that in mind

Pocket wifi usually costs a few dollars (USD) a day depending on which company you use. You can easily rent it at airport, and it's a very small hotspot device that has wifi connection, just connect on your phone or laptop as if you are connecting to any wifi network, and you will have internet access no matter where you are!

Lucky! Some attendants just let you through for free especially if they realize you are a tourist, but once I was at Tokyo station and entered at the wrong gate, he still charged me after telling him :( so don't take the chance!

JR Pass works on the JR network of trains. While there are some lines in the cities, particularly Tokyo and Osaka, JR is mostly the INTERCITY rail system. It includes the shinkansen bullet trains that are competing with airplanes. Getting a JR pass means you intend to use shinkansen, as although the JR pass works on all JR lines, it's only a good investment if you intend to use shinkansen bullet trains to quickly get between far away cities. For JR pass, you pay a very large fee to use it over 1, 2, or 3 weeks, and you can use it as much as you want in that period. If you use it enough, it saves money. If you don't, then it costs more than just paying as you go. It only works on JR trains (and a couple other JR things like certain buses and ferries). Using these actually COSTS a little bit of time, but can save a LOT of money depending on your itinerary. If you were Bill Gates you'd just say %#^ it and not get a pass- your time and the hassle isn't worth the potentially massive savings. But if you're a normal person, it can save hundreds of USD depending on your itinerary. IC cards work on almost all transportation (and some other things) nationwide. The point of these is convenience. You put money on it, and then use it at the ticket gates, and it calculates everything for you, including giving you the proper discounts for transfers. Although these can save you a little money, these save a LOT of time since calculating and buying individual tickets is a big hassle and time waste compared to just taking 20 seconds to put money on the card every couple weeks. So everyone from the poorest up to Bill Gates would use these since their main point is convenience.

In terms of buying JR pass, my rule of thumb is that if you travel to multiple cities in Japan within a week or 2, it's usually worth it. For example, if you travel from Tokyo to Osaka, then to Kyoto, Nara, etc. within 1 week, it's definitely worth it. However, if you are staying in a city for more than a few days, you may consider buying tickets separately. I recommend you calculate the total train ticket prices of all your travels between the cities, and compare with the price of the JR pass. Keep in mind you could also do all your long distance travels in a week, and buy a JR pass for a shorter period depending on how long your entire trip is

google for JR Pass calculator after you know your general itinerary. You can calculate what pass it's worth buying after inputing all of your general destinations. Then if a pass is right for you, use Navitime or HyperDia to calculate your transit routes, they offer a JR Pass filter that will optimize your route for using the pass. Otherwise it can be a pain to plan using Google Maps where it will only give you routes based on optimal time or cost without regard for your pass.

James F so the jr pass can be used on the subway as well? Does it include all subway lines? Will it cover any buses? Trying to plan my trip for April but their is just so much information to take in its gets overwhelming.

Kyle Trahan no Kyle, you can’t use it on the subway, but if you know which areas of Tokyo you wish to visit you can use the JR line, or the JR buses, but I don’t think many of the bus lines are JR. The JR pass works out best value if you are going outside of Tokyo eg Kyoto, plus the airport transfer by train. The JR pass website has a lot of info to help you decide 😀

Some apps do show that when it's applicable. Navitime and HyperDia will say which car to be in to easily find your transfer exit when it matters. But they only handle transit directions, not walking so they can't get you to or from the station which is why Google Maps is still best for visitors. Yahoo Japan Maps is best all around with very detailed station mapping, but does not offer English.

Don't worry, once you ride it once or twice, you will get the hang of it! It just looks so intimidating!

The main "problem" with the video is that it's building block oriented rather than directly practical. You get taught 4 minutes worth of basics and actually fairly technical stuff concerning tickets... and then she basically says that that'a a big pain, so just get an IC card instead! =P If this was say... an academic course, then that's how you'd do it... but as a basic help video it's sort of superfluous as there's little reason to buy basic tickets. So you kind of have to slog through 4 minutes before she starts giving out all the actually useful info. Concerning travel, there are basically 3 tiers you need to research 1) Long-distance travel 2) day passes 3) IC card There are a few good options for each of the first two, that totally depends on your itinerary, and then you use an IC card when nothing else applies. There's plenty of "low" cost food... I really don't think you'd have a problem. Basic tips include: 1) For anything fancy/expensive, lunch is usually the far better deal. 2) Other shops also have lunch specials... so it's budget friendly to make it the biggest meal. 3) Grocery stores are cheaper and better than convenience stores, and lots of pre-made stuff goes on sale around 8-11 pm, particularly for grocery stores that don't run 24h. Fun activities depend on your interests, and I highly suggest consulting with each other to determine an itinerary (not that everyone has to do everything together). There are basic things pretty much everyone should see... then you can go down the sort of things you all are interested in to fill in other days. MY personal recommendation is experiences... but experiences can be expensive. For example, in May, it is both baseball season and sumo season. Or maybe you could catch a band or idol group performance... or a traditional kabuki or bunraku show. Again, this sort of live show runs a lot more expensive than say, visiting museums or parks or shrines or tourist traps, but I think it adds a lot to a trip. BTW... concerning the dates, be aware that the first week or so of May is the Golden Week holiday, shortly after the Golden Week holiday (it's the spend money/travel/fun holiday) some stuff that didn't actually get a holiday will then take a holiday (restaurants, etc), and then toward the end of the month it is approaching the rainy season and there is some risk of major rain. There is some risk of rain all month long, but overall it's one of the nicest months weatherwise.
