I love how Japan is such a walkable country. I grew up in a place where it’s hard to get around without a car. If you live in suburbia, you’ll be stuck at home. And Japan’s mixed-zoned cities makes life so convenient. I live in a small town and not in a big city. Yet everything I need is a few minutes on foot from my doorstep! These things affords me a simple life, and that is how I truly feel free. I love living in Japan.

What you explained is not Japan exclusive. Many European cities are also very walkable. And I you life in the Japanese countryside, you still need a car.

@@jasonl968 DON’T!!!! I live in a county and you have to use transportation to get around. I’m in high school but I’m 9th grader so I can’t drive yet and I can’t get anything to eat because I have basically nothing that really close and the 1 gas station that’s close by the only way to get there is by going through a busy road and both of the roads to get to the middle of town or anywhere else in the county for that matter requires you to go into a highway so I can’t go to a restaurant by myself. I can’t even get to the gas station safely without going through a busy road. TRUST ME YOU DON’T WANT TO LIVE IN A COUNTY!!!!

I kinda feel it’s unfair for Akko ( real name Akiko) since she has a young daughter- the two older ones must be in University by now. Greg’s wife doesn’t want to appear on camera so her sister has to step in. I feel that’s kinda selfish

@@doriswaddington2418 Most Japanese are generally averse to getting any form of public attention, so they aren't great at making entertaining videos. It's also quite likely that his wife is the very averse type and doesn't want that kind of exposure for Aiko either (such was the vibe during one of their Q&A's). It's not like the West where most parents want their kids to become famous KZfaqrs. Akko-san, on the other hand is an adult and also seems to be the rare exception since she's very vocal, so she fits in perfectly. Also, I'm sure Greg compensates her well for her time (plus, free food and beer!), and she gets to learn film-making skills from him, so it's a win-win situation.

The development of Japan is intrinsically linked to its public transport. My wife has a car here in Japan, but we don't use it if we're going anywhere that has a bus route or is near a station. There's no point. They're great at disincentivising car travel. People in other countries claim their rights are being violated if they can't easily and cheaply drive and park everywhere.

I was in Japan for my first time recently and I really appreciated Google maps giving direction of which subway exit to use to get to the destination. The public transport options here are like no other city I've ever been to, just amazing.

As a bit of a nerd when it comes to public transportation and machines in general, this was a treat! One of the things I want to do in Japan is ride around on the many unique forms of transport. Not only to get from place to place but I think it’s a great way to see the world go buy you!

In my country bicycle speed limits are even lower at 10kph/6.2mph & kick scooters have the advantage over bicycles that they can be folded into more compact sizes & take less space when brought on-board public transport for longer distances

thanks for taking the shinkansen *within* tokyo so we don't have to 🤣 1,000 yen that's quite a lot considering the alternatives I guess if you're really in a rush and had to get there in 6 minutes, it's a good option

I would love a small title to appear on the bottom when you are filming a site such as the temple around the 8 minute to 9 minute mark. These videos help serve as a possible guide to seeing sites in Tokyo.

Another relaxing, informative and wonderful video. Love your Tokyo by.... series. It reminds me of my time there and makes me want to go back! The Tokyo by boat one specifically was an eye opener, I had no idea someone could rent and drive a private boat around on their own! This one one was awesome, I bet you and Akko loved the end when you could eat, chill and have a beer after a long day.

Greg, this video and the other big video of Tokyo by Train are my favorites, as a good lover and passionate about all these transportation topics. Despite everything I've read about Tokyo, you always introduce me new things, I didn't know about water taxis or the dinner boat at the end of the video! How beautiful everything, like all your videos! Yeah I don't get it either. Riding a rikshaw is really chill and the operator will explain a few about the town etc. It's really cool in my opinion, much better than an open bus lol.

In another video about life in Japan, the maker remarked that some jobs in Japan are havens for extroverts. Perhaps pulling a rickshaw is like that. Of course, you would need to be physically fit as well. It must be tough being a "people person" in metropolitan Japan.

What an indepth, high quality documentary this is. Oh, how joyful I was to watch it entirly. So, SO good! I grew up discovering my birth place from top to bottom with my grandfather by using public transportation. I love trams, trolleybuses and normal busses so much. Tokyo breaths an entire culture of public transportation. It looks so unique. Thank you so much!

Utterly wonderful video. All your content is enjoyable and informative, but your travel based ones such as this or the cycling ones are by far my favourite. You really get a feel for the flow of life in the city, seeing people go about their daily lives, and the transportation options they use are such a huge part of it all that mostly goes unnoticed due to how seamlessly they integrate into the city infrastructure as a whole. Greg, Olga and I, after seeing the title and walking our dog, started debating all the ways you could "ride" (keeping it clean!) in Tokyo. I said "piggyback" wouldn't be covered, but we did think some kind of live animal would be featured--and maybe the the mechanical Panda was the best you could do in a day. We just love how you put your videos together!

Having just come back from our first trip to Tokyo, (8 whole days!) the Yamanote line was our most frequently used train line, followed by the Asakusa line, seeing as we were only 5 minutes from both Tamachi and Mita stations. They were both so convenient and frequent but my legs were cursing all the stairs by the end of day 2 lol. We never used the bus ourselves, but we did use the metro, jr lines, yurikamome, and monorail as well as a lot of walking. The public transport systems here in Ireland, where I consider a bus eireann bus being only 15 minutes late 'on time' (though they're often 20+ minutes late where I live) have nothing on Tokyo! I loved seeing all the places we went to in this video as well. And I'm with your wife, I did not like the sound of some doors when they did the high pitched frequency thing as I passed by, it hurt my ears so much.

Thank you for the trip, Greg! Seeing Shinagawa sure made me nostalgic. I rode from Kamata to Shinagawa thousands of times when I lived in Japan. That was almost 15 years ago now and it's fascinating to see a place both familiar and new - Tokyo changes at a bristling pace. When I go next I would like to try the water taxi - one mode I haven't tried!

The expressway going directly over Nihonbashi conveniently puts the National 0 mile mark on both the national road and the expressway systems, I suppose. The original Odaiba is a series of battery islands, built specifically to deter seaward naval attacks by European powers after Matthew Perry's party sailed right into Edo Bay. It failed its first invasion, Captain Perry's return a few year later. But really, seeing Tokyo from the waterways completely changes the perspective. It's like you take in only the big picture, just from very low angle. And the reflections are just so gorgeous. So much so that Tokyo Lens got himself a boating license for it. P.S. for those places where tripods aren't allowed, can you technically skirt that by having those suction cup camera holders and stick it to the windows, like those Connor used? pps Oh hey, Keikyu trains, my favourite, inside Asakusa subway! Love it!
