I was on the 52nd floor of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills when the earthquake struck. You can get a sense of how much the tower was shaking from the curtains moving and the people screaming. The earthquake itself was scary, but the psychological fear of the tower collapsing etc was stronger.
Well after the earthquake stopped, the building continued to sway back and forth. We ended up waiting about 1 1/2hrs for the lifts to start up again.

They're on the 52nd floor, during a 9.1 magnitude. That is absolutely impressive architecture.

I kinda relate to this situation. I was on the 47th floor when an earthquake strike. That time, I am standing because I'm talking with my co-worker. The earthquake was strong enough to make you feel a bit dizzy. It was my first time experiencing an earthquake in a higher place. When the earthquake stopped, I decided to get all my stuff and immediately evacuate through the fire exit. It was very tiring because, from the 47th floor, you need to walk/run down to the ground floor. It's true that the psychological fear of the building collapsing is stronger. Even if you calm yourself, the fact that you are in a higher place is enough to make you cry or trembling in fear.

My Dad used to work for Texas Instruments and had to take a business trip to Tokyo to see the clients on some project they were working on. He got to the hotel and was given a tour of Tokyo by the concierge. The concierge was particularly proud of the spring system on which the hotel was built. When an earthquake hits the hotel can give a little to the shaking. Sure enough My Dad woke one morning and saw the horizon swaying from his window(his room was several stories up) He called and the concierge was up make sure he was alright and to remind him about the springs in the basement and what he experienced was his first earthquake.

I had already moved back to Canada before this one happened but still dealt with a few quakes on the 21st and 40th floors at couple of office towers that I worked at in Tokyo. We all had our earthquake kits stored under our work desks for just these types of events. Luckily, I never had to pullout the kit and put on the helmet because if you did, you knew it was gonna be bad.
