Tokyo Godfathers, another masterpiece by the late Satoshi Kon, is an amazing romp through Japan as three transients attempt to find a dumpster baby's mother. It's got the hilarious hijinks of a Yakuza game mixed with the symbolism and exceptionalism Kon is known for.

Tokyo Godfathers is one of the few anime Christmas movies you'll ever find. It's fun, hilarious, and also soul warming and heart breaking all at the same time. Plus if you know anything about Satoshi Kon and his work, you know he doesn't leave a single scene in a film without purpose, and Tokyo Godfathers is no different. The film is a phenomenal watch if you're looking for a fun and progressive holiday movie, but under the hood there's so much going on, so many instances of symbolism, of things that connect that you might be missing. It's a strange movie for Kon considering his other works, yet it might be one of his best.

Happy holidays everyone! Thank you for watching 🥰 I just want to clarify (cause we’ve gotten crap before) “queer” is a term both Tyler and I respect and identify with, we don’t use it in a derogatory way at all. Anyway, this was a personal video for me and I appreciate how cool people have been so far! We all have different stories and journeys, I did eventually get my GED and went to college (course I dropped out of that shit too) eh, haha, I just like learning for fun! Basically, just thank you guys, may next year be a better one ☝🏻 -Mike

I was homeless from 16-18 and man I almost cried as you were talking about it. The shame of relying on strangers and occasionally running into people I knew. I'm 35 now and I still feel extreme guilt over asking for any form of assistance as it feels like I've used up my "help me points" in those years.

The anime is totally dominated by Christmas miracles until midnight on New Year's Day; that's when Christmas ends and Shinto begins, when I used to go to a Buddhist temple in Chicago and help ring the bell 108 times. So to me it wasn't a kamikaze that saved Hana and Kyoko; it was the Wind God Susano'o, and as the wind settles them to the ground we see the rising sun--Susano'o's sister the Sun God Amaterasu!

I don't know if I've seen a poor analysis of this movie. But this was one of the best. I appreciate the insights into your personal life and I appreciate your willingness to be that open on the internet. I've been subbed for months and seen more than a few of your videos, but your channel is finally registering in my head as "one of the greats" and not just another one of the many, many channels a viewer has to choose from on KZfaq. I'm not good for much money but I'm on my way over to Patreon to give what I can. I appreciate you, brother. Be well. And happy holidays.

About 10 years ago I went to the local blockbuster after working at the pizza place next door which was my high school job. I went in and looked around for the candy I came in for but noticed Tokyo Godfathers towards the end on an isle before the checkout. I liked the look of it and picked it up. It ended up being a movie I could never really forget even though I only watched it once with my sister before returning it. A few months later, I went in again and seen a bargain bin full of movies they were selling and the disc art for Paprika caught my eye. I bought it and took it home and watched it with my sister. She loved it and seen the similarities between it and inception but liked Paprika so much more that I ended up giving the dvd to her, since I liked it but clearly not as much as she did. It wasn't until a year ago that I realized the only two movies I ever watched from that blockbuster store were by the same creator and were loved so much.

One thing I noticed: The homeless man that Gin helped was wearing almost the exact same clothes as him, red hat, navy hoodie and gray pants. I thought that he was drunkenly seeing himself dead during that scene, which I feel adds to the message the movie was trying to show that the old man is what Gin would've become had he not gone through the rest of the movie.

Here's to Grandma and Grandpa Bonsai! Family members like that are hard to come by man. As someone who just recently has to move back in with his mom (not nearly as serious as your predicament) and its been so awesome seeing her again, talking with her daily and joking around with her. She tells me daily that she loves having me here and while I definitely don't plan on staying here for good, the feeling of safety and being so close to her has made a lot of my stresses go away. So happy holidays Mike!

Your personal story hits very close to home. You’ve lived a difficult life and I’m sorry to hear that, and I’m glad you’ve been so successful in turning your life around, but the sad reality is that it’s not always the case. Clearly your personal business is your business, and the circumstances behind your leaving your family behind are unknown to us, but as a mother of a little boy who just reached his preteen years, I have my worries and concerns. He’s struggling right now, and I’m doing everything I can think of to help him through his tough times. I just hope he continues to seek me out for help and doesn’t ever feel he has to leave and face his hardships alone. It’s a scary and sobering thought. Thank you for sharing with us. You gave me hope that no matter what there can still be a happy ending.

man this has been by far the most touching christmas anything that I have seen in a long while for some weird reason this is the only satoshi kon film I have never seen which makes no sense to me since I have seen all the other ones and loved them not sure why I never got around to seeing this one but hey it is never too late to right that wrong especially since due to the circumstances of this shitty year I will be spending christmas alone but even hearing your story about your life and your family fills me with hope cause it is often the barriers we put in our own way that end up denying us the happiness and love we deserve and regardless of what you believe we all have faith in something and if it get you through your roughest times then so be it christmas may have started out as a christian thing but as someone who identifies as christian I would like to believe it is something that can be celebrated and cherished the world over cause we can all use a reminder at least once a year if not more that miracles are real we need only look around a little more often so that we can witness them merry christmas bonsai pop and to all who take the time to read this ridiculously long comment

This was my first Kon film. I bought it from Blockbusters years ago on a whim. Didn't know it was sub only and i held off on watching it until I had the time. And I'm oddly thankful for that and a bit sad that after all of these years we're getting a dubbed version. And it's not the usual one is better (though I hope we don't get the usual fights when it comes to dubbing.) I liked it being subbed because it being subtitled made me sit and *focus* on it. I couldn't multitask like I usually do I, I had to see everything, every scene, every detail, there was no listening while doing something else. I realized just hearing it wouldn't do the job. Then the next day I watched it again. I still have that copy and try to watch it every year during this time, and it's been an experience maturing and learning more then seeing this film differently over the years.
