This was amazing! So cool to have my question directly answered! At around 15 minutes you guys talked about the employees pushing a change for more remote work. I think that push will mostly have to come from foreigners or Japanese who have experience working abroad or in non-tadional Japanese style. The typical Japanese employee is not going to push back against anything. Just my observation.

Thanks for the questions. I learnt so much myself. About remote work, I know a western start ups that only allows 2 days a week remote. If I had a company I'm not sure how I'll manage it, ideally full remote anywhere within 4hrs time difference but yeah how would you manage your team?

@@devippo If I know I'm dealing with skilled devs who thrive when they are left alone and able to get into their flow state of work and creativity, I think I could do remote anywhere in the world and not even have daily meetings, just meetings with necessary people as needed and maybe a mandatory weekly group meeting that works for everyone's time zone. I feel this way because I'm in a remote mastermind group and half of us are in Asia and the other half in North America. For entry level devs I think remote isn't so good, that's coming from my experience of having my first developer job being fully remote with no option to go into the office because everyone is fully remote. And we are constantly hiring new people with no experience. When the lead dev is absent (which is rare) productivity is hit hard because the new people are just at home by themselves with no help.

I agree short pre interviews would be great. I wish more companies did this.

Thanks for both parts. A lot of things were clarified/confirmed for me. I guess with my 2 years of backend and half-assed N3+ something listening-speaking-reading I may have a chance with a recruiter to get to japan from overseas. Slight, but existing chance.

Never say never. studying for N2 while not being in Japan is really hard. You will have to push yourself to keep up the daily study schedule. Nearly there man!

Very informative interview with many examples that might correspond with many people's situations. I wonder what if I'm here in Japan (I'm second year student here) at lets say tier 2 university, but my major is 国際日本, so nothing related with IT. I speak Japanese at N2 level, and by the time I graduate I should be able to be even more fluent. Im taking programming class at uni, but most of the time I learn on my own (python, js), I've got CS50 certificate and I'm planning to get some more like AWS cert etc. I started doing some leetcode easy/medium problems recently. I have no working experiance though, but I want to find an internship next year. What are the chances for being employed for someone with my background as new grad? I dont really feel like working in a typical Japanese company, I would like to have an international team.

Thank you for the amazing interview!! I'd like to know what are the probabilities for someone who already has PR and N3. I'm thinking to move back when I finished my dilloma in canada.

Just commenting on "I can't get a mortgage". While you can't get a cheap mortgage from a major bank, you should be able to qualify for a FLAT35 based on your last 12 months salary. It's backed by the government with very flexible rules, although it's not the best rates (like last year FLAT35 would be 1.5% while banks offered as low as 0.5%)

Oh thanks for the info! I will look into it. I'll probably buy something cheap out of Tokyo.

My takeaways are unless you can speak Japanese, you have to be a Ferrari dev willing to take a Toyota pay or you need to get lucky, else tough luck

I have somewhat this impression, Japan is becoming more popular for the zoomer & late millennial generation. Which means Ferrari devs will be the first accepted.

Thank you a lot for the interview! Is it possible to ask some questions about an IT management and recruitment process for Project Managers in Japan. How difficult and "how far" is employment possible for the foreigner PM?
@devippo
@devippo 2 ай бұрын
From my experience a PM that doesn't speak Japanese will have to work at a foreign / English speaking company. Not impossible but not so many job openings. Most PM's I've worked with were Japanese and didn't speak English.

I am just going to learn Japanese, go back to visit for 2 weeks next year to network to build connections, and try to get a work visa after I get 5 years of experience as a frontend developer. Might try to see if I can network with an engineer at the Yokosuka base I was stationed at. Me trying to go to Japan at my level right now, like the recruiter mentioned is a risk. Studying for the ITPEC and flying to Philippines to take the test would be a headache for me.

What if you lie about your current/previous salary? Is there a way for them to discover you're lying?

The companies that ask this typically ask for confirmation, such as payslips or the previous year's tax certificate.

@@rafae5902 Unless you do your own taxes, you will have to submit your tax statement from the previous year to your new employer so they can do your end of year tax adjustment. They will see your salary from the previous year on that document (源泉徴収票).
