A tour of Kameido's Tenjin Shrine, famous for its Wisteria Festival and its stunning display of blossoms in April.
Kameido Tenjin Shrine is a 17th Century Shinto shrine located in the Koto area of Tokyo. It's dedicated to Sugawara-no Michizane, a politician and scholar who's venerated as a patron of learning.
The shrine became famous for its beautiful wisteria blossoms in the Edo period (1603-1868), and it was celebrated by several the ‘Ukiyo-e’ ('art of the floating/ephemeral world') including Hokusai and Hoshige who portrayed the shrine’s tall 'drum bridges' that lead over its ponds to the main shrine.
The wisteria trellises were built in the early 18th century, it's still a popular destination for Hanami (flower viewing) and probably Tokyo's finest display of wisteria.
The Wisteria Festival takes place in late April to early May each year when the flowers are in full bloom and during the festival, the shrine is illuminated at night. It provides a spectacular view of the flowers, and visitors can enjoy food and drink stalls and street entertainers.
It's a must-see if you're visiting Tokyo in April!
