After MONTHS of the Suica and Passmo being canceled, it looks like Japan’s ICONIC Suica Card is officially back!! Well sort of, let me explain! For anyone that might not know, Tokyo's Suica and Passmo Cards are the primary method to pay for the trains, buses, and other forms of public transportation in the Tokyo area. However, because of a perfect storm between a massive semiconductor chip shortage and a sharp demand increase from tourists earlier this year, these essential transportation cards were discontinued until spring of 2024. And for a while things looked bleak, as there were only a few options to hold tourists over until the Suica returned. But now, it finally seems like there is some good news to celebrate about, as JR East recently disclosed they are now offering Suica cards again… in a limited capacity that is. After hearing the rumors and unconfirmed reports, I decided to check it out myself. And luckily the good news is true, as I have confirmed it myself! And as every video I have made, I’m going to help you and show exactly how and where to get your very own Suica card for when you visit Japan! Not only that, but I’ll show you every other IC option currently available so your trip is as stress free as possible! Shoutout to PESO for letting me know about this update on their website first! On Jan 16th, Shinagawa station has suicas available at the JR travel center. Shinjuku didnt have any. Hope this helps.

In late October, we were able to purchase the Toica card at the JR Ticket Office in Kyoto Station, as well. So, if you happen to be in Kyoto and are in need of an IC card, you might want to check that out.

I love using Suica on the iPhone version. I can top it up whenever I want when the amount goes low-no need to spend time at the ticket machine inserting money to top the physical card up. The rate from Apple Card is reasonable, too! There's no need to be scared of losing the card. Very convenient! The only downside is you've got to be careful of how much you want to top up your card before you leave Japan. So you don't leave a considerable amount of money on your card. I go to Japan about once a year, so it's not a problem because the money I spend will stay on my iPhone until my next trip to Japan.

A couple of weeks ago, during my last day in Fukuoka, I came across an advertisement in its metro system for a 1 day unlimited pass and when I noticed the price I thought to myself what an idiot I was for just using my IC card all the times. Sure, it's not that I was spending that much money, but given the cost of a 1 day pass, it still would have saved me some money.

The only pass that did not increase its price is the Hokuriku Arch Pass that you can go to Kyoto-Osaka passing through Kanazawa (does not include the Tokaido Shinkansen for the return)

@@SSuper1976 bad news though.. hokuriku's price most likely will be increased as well in march 2024 after they announced the shinkansen route extension to Tsuruga will be opened in March 2024. Still no official announcement of course (about the price), but better prepare for the worst 🥲

Given that the prices with JR hadn't changed for soo long, I dout that that will happen. And when I was traveling last spring and noticed how full the green car was on virtually every train I took, mostly with tourists, I can understand why they did it. The only sad thing is that the pass still does not include the Nozomi.

One change that would probably suit everyone is if the pass changed to non-consecutive days. The usage is infinitely more flexible at that point. In fact, if that were to happen, the current new price would immediately be a bargain again, cause you’re now limited to one or two side trips from Tokyo, via Shinkansen.

No big deal. On our next trip this year, we will be flying domestically instead of taking the Shinkansen. Flying is generally cheaper anyway.

Getting the Pasmo Passport was pretty quick and simple, especially since it was right there in Haneda when I landed, plus the ticket machines to load more right next to the counter for the IC card. The only thing is getting it out of my wallet, but that can be fixed with a card holder and lanyard, which is what I saw a lot of people doing if they weren't using their phones or watches.

note that its only valid for a few weeks. A friend of mine had about ¥2000 in fares expire after about a month. I wouldn't recommend it if you're staying for longer than a few weeks

As for Narita Airport. I'm there at the moment and all Suica and Welcome suica cards are sold out. Pasmo is apparently at the skyliner information office though.

@coldhunni814 I decided to go for the Pasmo version of Welcome Suica: Pasmo passport. Having the convenience of not buying a separate ticket every time I want to use a train and just using the Pasmo feels worth it.

Thanks for sharing! Yea based on the websites, it seems like the Pasmo Passport or a paper ticket were the only options. As I mentioned in the video though, you could get the N'EX into Tokyo and then get a Suica or another option after getting off the N'EX. Hope you have a good time in Japan!

Just did it yesterday and it was smoother than in the video (a good thing) in terms of asking. Getting there can be confusing to folks who aren't used to Public Transportation. Just ask for Toica card and they will just ask for "Ni Sen Yen". Which is the 2000 mentioned in the video. Also be mindful if you get to Shinagawa station and you're not used to public transport, you'll need to "leave " the paid area before you access JR Central or East Offices. So, if you land in from Shinjukue Towards Shinagawa via JR Ticket/Pass or another Private Railway You'll need to go through the gates and use your according ticket or pass inorder to leave the gate that is not the open-air-out-of-building-exit but rather just the paid area exit. The office is after the paid area exit/gates (where you insert the ticket) Also you'll first see JR EAST OFFICE and then when you make a right and head straight for a bit, on your left you'll see another JR OFFICE which is JR CENTRAL who will issue you the TOICA Card. If you plan to go back to Shinjuku or to the Station you got off of, you'll need to purchase another TICKET or Simply scan your IC card and head towards the gates that are in front of JR EAST office which would be on your right now (since your heading back the way you came from) and purhcase a ticket to enter the gates in your left inorder to get back to the platform or stop you originally got off at. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update Harb! irks me so much when you have to buy a suica though, only to top it up with cash only (london you just use any credit/debit card) then can't even use outside of main cities (when I lived in Hokkaido) then cash only... but. make sure you don't have 500 yen as they changed the coin (they also changed all £1 coins and all notes in the last few years in UK) ! so have to have only 100 yen coins... even on 600+ yen fairs... Love Japan but idea of it being in the future... is like an 80s dream at this point

wanted to give yall an update, I went to the Ueno JR station on 1/9/24 and they told me they do not have the physical green suica card. I didn't try other stations. Just get the pasmo passport or go to the JR central office at Tokyo Station to get the TOICA.

A few days into my trip in Japan last October I purchased an Icoca card from a ticketting machine near an entrance of Nishi-umeda metro station in Osaka. I brought it in Tokyo afterward. Many cashers there were hesitant upon seeing the card.

The problem is that you still have to be able to get them. If you fly to other places than Tokyo, that's usually not a problem, but in Tokyo, you are currently limited.

I tried to get the Suica a few days ago in Shinjuku station, but it was already sold out again. I went to the tourist Information in Seibu-Shinjuku metro station and got a Pasmo Passport instead.

Really informative, thank you. One issue we noted is that although you may be able to pick up a Suica card at Haneda you are not able to return it there. How do you get from Central to the airport and then get a refund? Do you return it in town and then buy a ticket?

If you have an iPhone, transferring the card to the phone gives you the full refuind onto the virtual card.

I'm actually thinking of buying my next Android phone during my next trip just so that I can use it with a virtual IC card. While I really like my Suica card, had it since my first visit in 2018, when traveling around Japan, I dislike the fact that you can usually only recharge it with cash. Fortunately, some transit networks are also slowly adopting the possibility to use your Visa/Mastercard directly on some ticket gates.

That's good news for a friend of mine who wants to come along if I visit Japan again next year, since he can't use what I consider the most convenient method of paying for public transport: Virtual Suica on iPhone. I used it every day when I was in Tokyo and multiple times on the monorail train on Okinawa island, recharged it three or four times, never had a single problem. :) But I still had to buy a plastic card because the buses on Okinawa island didn't accept Suica or Pasmo. Would be great if all Japanese IC cards were compatible to each other.

What I used is basically the Apple Wallet app on my iPhone, in which I first added a credit card and then a virtual Suica card, to which I can add money via credit card whenever needed. The phone can then be used just like a normal IC card at the entrance and exit gates in the subway stations.

I still have my TOICA card that I acquired on a trip to Numazu City, Shizuoka in March 2023. I've been using it ever since in Tokyo. Apparently it's not so well-known especially in the smaller neighborhoods. The cashiers are initially dumbfounded and tell me I can't use it and sometimes have to call in the supervisor. After all the fuss, they finally tell me it's okay to use it.

Bought a welcome suica at NRT at end of Nov 2023, regular suica cards still not available. 500 yen charge is waived. I would have preferred a regular card that doesn’t expire as I will be returning. It didn’t make sense that a limited use card was available during a chip shortage and not a reusable card. Had to make sure to spend down the card at the end. It was however very convenient. Phone option is a good one if you have an iphone and a mastercard (not visa)

Yup. Any IC Card obtained in Japan will work on most train systems in the country.

Yes you can do it via the ticket machine, not sure of the procedure since I got my passmo card registered more than 10 years ago by accident when I was browsing though monthly concession pass. Basically the machine will print your name on the front lower central portion of the card.

If I am not mistaken, SUICA cards are valid as long as it is not more than 10 years from last transaction? I think the same applies to non-SUICA IC cards as well besides TOICA (ICOCA, Passmo, etc)?

Yes. Nothing to do with JR pass, it's complementary to the JR pass. Use it for lines that are not JR.

I was in Tokyo on December 23. Arrived at haneda expecting to buy a suica card only to find they were not available. It was a massive pain in the arse trying to work out all the tickets with 2 toddlers after flying a 12 hour flight. Needing cash to buy the ic card is the most painful part
