I went winter solo car camping in my dodge grand caravan which I turned into a campervan. It got very cold but I stayed pretty warm with my electric blanket. I take my minivan camper camping all the time, but tried some new things in this video. A lot of fresh snow on the ground, but thankfully it was plowed.

what you need is multi fuel campng stove and jet boil pot as your water boiling set up, you can use propane from your propane tank as well as gas from car to run it, jet boil jug has fins on the base which absorbs heat from the flame and boils water really fast, as you are already using a tent to as kitchnette, you dont have to worry about carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide build up in your sleeping area. that will help you save batteries.

But 2 sleeping bags and a few blankets on top in 18 degrees worked better, no heat or no power! I was totally warm in 2 sleeping bags, few blankets on top, 4 layer hat, shirt, socks and underwear. Very warm after about 40 minutes!

Yeah sleeping bag is more practical for sure, just wanted to try out the electric blanket thing to see what it’s like and if it’s worth it. I’d want to get one that pull less watts, and just have extra blanket. Also decent solar setup before I’d want to use it for multiple days in a row.

Your only talking about the output side of that equation. While 1KW of electricity can be converted to 1kw of heat energy, you have to consider the power density. He's got a 80lb battery pack that holds around 2kw, which is 2kw of heat energy. a single 4 oz isobutane canister which weighs a few oz has more energy than that. The video you reference, while a good video, is also under the assumption that accessibility to either energy source is not limited. Just because you can use your cell phone energy to boil a cup of water doesn't mean you should, especially if then you will have no energy for your cell phone.

Hey there... If I remember correctly from the past,,, Electric blankets aren't supposed to have a lot of weight on them when powered. They are supposed to go over people, not the other way around. One of the waste products of burning propane is water. Humidity will increase the longer you have the heater on... Or when using a propane stove. Sometimes it condenses on the metal above the headliner especially when really cold. Black mold can make a home. Stay safe and warm
@TolbersCamping
@TolbersCamping Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve never slept on top of a heater blanket but worked great. I agree though it’s probably not meant for it, just a trial thing for me. Yes propane does create quiet a bit of moisture, but just like after you take a shower you turn on the fan to pull all the moisture out you can start your vehicle and run the heat with ac on for a few minutes to do the same thing as you see I did in this video. Thanks for watching!

@@TolbersCamping Electric blankest also not supposed to be folded over on to themselves. This can create hot spots where one wire crosses another. Another thing is the extension cord for the hot plate. Something this high of wattage should not be attached to an extension cord. Especially one that is under a floor mat with no protection. There are reasons people burn down their houses in the winter. Most of which are related to stressing electrical systems beyond their design intent.

I remember being put on muscle relaxers when I had a water bed tell you what. Being on muscle relaxers and sleeping on a water bed it's pure heaven it's like your floating on clouds. Using a heating pad for your bed OR even a heating blanket as one is nice as well during winter. Turn it on like 10 mins before getting in bed you will never climb in a cold bed ever again.

You might want to check that location finder info before you trust it. If that doesn’t have a cellular or GPS location that transmits and receives, it’s using the app on YOUR phone to determine its location. I’d test it by leaving it someplace safe, driving away (app off) and see of it can find its location from a mile+ away. If it can’t find/see it consider attaching a gps or AirTag to help with its recovery if needed. 😊

I have one but it drains my Jackery pretty fast so I have never used it. 0 degree sleeping bag works fine for me. But I haven’t gone out in temps lower than 35 degrees think. That moon shade is an awesome idea!! It adds so much square footage to the minivan. I love using electric blankets but as you said, they do draw a lot of power. I switched to a usb mattress pad; it is not nearly as hot but it's warm enough for winter camping and draws far less power. Love your experiments! 🥰

Thanks Jacqueline, I’ve been looking at some of those heating pads and need to try it out. I just got one for under my water that pulls very few watts I’m going to try, to see if it helps keep it from freezing over night.

For those dehydrated meals, that you just need to boil water, i use a coffee maker to heat the water, might save you some energy on your power station.

I've enjoyed this channel a great deal. I'm in a situation where I can't really do a build because I gotta haul 4 kids around. My van camping adventures have to be quick to setup and takedown. Soccer mom by day, van camper by night. You give me some good ideas to improve my setup. Thank you!

Nice candle...Fun story... We get to camp one afternoon in the Sierras and my Dad, who arrived a few days before, says "lucky you weren't here yesternight cuz there was a bear in camp..." I figured he was out to scare my greenhorn boyfriend so I ignored it since he was chuckling to no end all the way back to his own camp. We set up, great day until... we find the missing ice chest from the raided camp the night before (across the river and full of tooth like holes), now we know it's real... nice night until... we light a vanilla ice cream candle we brought and my bf looks at me after inhaling the pleasant, accurate, aroma... eyes wide he says "This candle smells TOO good..." slams the lid back on and hides the candle out by the fire pit. Morning comes and my Pop thinks its a hoot to send his rottweiler over in the dark to wake us up.... Bf thinks it's the real thing until our own pooch starts wagging his tail, and under his breath says "I'm never buying another scented candle again"... Still my favorite story!

You should try an induction burner. They use way less power. True you need to be sure cookware is induction compatible though.

I’ve never used one but from what I have heard that will be a better option so can’t wait to try and see the difference 😁 I’ll make sure to get the proper cookware also. Thanks for watching bro

Matt, I use a Mr Cofee Keurig to heat water for my dehydrated food pouches. I use a Generarc 1000 Watt power bank almost identical to your Jackery, it heats the water in about 2 minutes and didn't draw much at all on it.

Those heaters make me nervous....keep in mind that standard home CO detectors don't register anything below about 20 ppm. So they aren't going to even register low levels of CO and it can still hurt you over time.
