I was told to LEAVE by the end of the day at an establishment where there shouldn't have been any issues - but how clear were their rules to begin with? This was my first Vanlife Conflict, not too bad I guess for something that was bound to happen.

My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!
Be Happy, Be Creative, Be Yourself and BE POSITIVE!

I’ve been noticing more and more signs saying “no overnight parking” “no camping” and such. It seems that the upper crust wants to make life more and more difficult for hard working people just trying to survive. Humans evolved as nomads and there have always been gypsies and other traveling people. The thing I like about your channel compared to other van life channels is that you are painting a realistic picture. Very few people can afford $200,000 for a custom van with a recirculating shower, induction cooktop and electric Murphy bed.

If you watch some of the other van lifer channels you would understand further why this is happening. Unfortunately some of the van lifers are taking advantage of the spots and turning them into a camp site. And some being out right dicks to the businesses, owners, residents around them. To the point that businesses, municipalities or cities just toss up no overnight parking. So the only people to blame are the bad van lifers that caused conflict at these places. As a example a local highway rest stop has turned into a van lifer permanent living. They have set up structures, tables, tarps and large propane cylinders just so obvious. And you know what is going to happen next? No overnight parking signs will be posted and who’s fault is that?
@VanlifePLUS
@VanlifePLUS Жыл бұрын
@@crankshaft007 yeah, that has always been a big concern - others ruining it for everyone else who is following the rules and trying to lead by example. Even more unfortunately are the reasons WHY so many more people are living out of their vehicles and I don’t think that is something that is going to get better any time soon
@jayceewedmak9524

@@crankshaft007 The reststop management/owner should stop things from the beginning. I'm not saying it's their fault, just that it's a reststop for one night - as in "rest" "stop" - and Canada is just too big not to have somewhere to pull over and have a rest from driving. Now, the vanlifers, they deserve their butts kicked. I truly don't understand selfish, self-centered, entitled people - I'm really becoming fed-up with being denied the ability to do things, dragging out bags of their garbage, picking up their broken glass, people not having grey water tanks - the list goes on ... They're just yahoos. End of rant. Sorry 😔 Edit to say - I'm in a grand caravan so I'm not dissing all dwellers ✌

I am surprised the flying J doesn't allow overnight parking. When I traveled from BC to Arizona last year in my rav4 (set up for sleeping in) I often stayed at Flying J in the States. I would call when I arrived and asked if they allowed overnight. I phoned instead of walking as it felt safer being a solo woman. They all said yes but only had a designated number of spots. The showers are great. You never know what led to them saying no. In Vernon BC, where I live, the only place friendly to overnight parking was Superstore. This fall though it was shut down due to jerks who left a lot of garbage . Someone even built a "campfire" on the pavement! It's annoying when the few thoughtless entitled people ruin it for everyone else.

I think a lot had to do with the van being an older Chevy with mismatched panel colours, curtains separating the cab from the cargo, solar panels and a pet cat. If you look like you don't live in your vehicle or rather are affluent then they won't mind you staying the night but if they think you might live there indefinitely and are poor then they would want to chase you away.

The owner of the flying J probably thought you were going to spend the night there because you were plugged in and had the window coverings on your windows. 🤔 you have alot more places to park overnight than here in BC. More and more no overnight/camping signs have been going up all over BC. Especially in Vancouver, but ppl kind of ruined it by staying in one place.

The best way to test that flying J is to go back repeat the same routine you did last time except this time do not plug in lucky or cover the windows and if they still leave a note on the windshield in that short amount of time then you can probably conclude that there simply profiling certain vehicle types at that point.

In the end it won't matter. If the owner wants to put notes on every van that comes by he can as it's private property. It's not nice but I'm sure he must have had problems before.. Not all van lifers are as considerate as Matt unfortunately and it only takes a few bad apples to ruin the whole bunch. We used to have a couple in a van park in our apartment lot, it was a four unit building and they'd be cooking smelly food all the time and letting their dog shit wherever it wanted and throwing cig butts around. A single lady living there was uncomfortable with two dirty looking ppl with dreadlocks hanging around her place all day so she had to call the cops. This was after over a month of them living there. They left, they may not have been hurting anyone but they were infringing on ppls peace of mind and taking a spot from visitors of ppl paying for that privilege

Be careful about turning on wipers if they are frozen to the window. I did that once, and it didn't just blow a fuse, but burned out the motor that runs the wipers. I was NOT a happy camper over that one! I wish cars would do like years before and allow you to spray wiper fluid WITHOUT automatically turning the wipers on too. If you pour some rubbing alcohol just above the wiper blades and wait a bit, it will soften an ice that might have the blades frozen to the window. I also add extra rubbing alcohol and dish soap to my wiper fluid. My 20 yr old Viper remote start still works on my old minivan, so have the luxury of starting my minivan up 15 minutes before I go out to it. Also good if traveling and stop for a nap along interstate, if I need to run AC or heat while napping in back. If I ever get a newer vehicle, I WILL have a remote start system installed in it too! I paid $400 in 2004 for it, and that cost averaged across 19 years comes to about $20 per year now.

Good evening Matthew. Doesn't every day life just keep you shaking your head, somewhat like a bobble head sun catcher?? I needed to see all of you tonight, 💗 Thank you all for being here. Smiling, because of you made my turmoil lessen. Pet Penny and Stella for me. Interesting 2 days for me, January left with a complete 💥 explosion in my day. My trucks center yoke of the 2 piece driveshaft decided to let go, what an awfully loud noise that was, right under me. I was blessed by having a spot to put my truck on a side street, next to Murphy's Pub.....abit of Ireland. However 930 a.m a tad too early to be partaking of the spirits. I don't drink anyway. But trust me by the end of this day, it was tempting. So after 4 hours of sitting waiting for Sheba my cat to be out of surgery, finding a tow truck that would hook me up and take me to pick up my kitty. My 2005 F150 was on a flatbed, for a 55 minute ride. After $300.00, we all were home. Me with a broken truck, and a new driveshaft required, a yoke cannot be replaced on this one. Either $967.00 and a wait until Feb 24th back order from dealer or after market $647. Both of these prices are either my whole months income or 2/3rds of it. I am beside myself. And to complete my 24 hr Riot period, at 1:25 a m my furnace in my camper stopped. Putting me abruptly awake & outside switching tanks. Not that easy. After literally taking down the empty tank & moving new tank & re hook up. It still said nope. But I had a propane smell in my camper home at 2 degrees Fahrenheit. At 3 pm I repeated tank process and furnace came to life. So she's temperamental. PERFECT ❤️. But she's working. Can't wait for the rest of this month.0 degrees Fahrenheit in morning and -2 Thursday nite ahead. Mathew you stay warm hun. Be Safe, Be Healthy and Always find Joy in your day 🐈‍⬛🐈🐾🍀🇨🇦❄️☃️🇺🇲

Best part of this video is when you told your TV you loved it. Had me rollin'. My TV is the one thing I know I'll miss. It's a 56' Samsung that was originally $650, but it was the floor model, on sale, and I got other discounts that brought the total down to $200 including tax. I've had it for over a year and although I've never told it this, I do love it. 📺

That is weird that there is no overnight parking at a Flying J. Most truck stops in the U.S. you can stay at over night night. That is a lot for a shower too. I think it is sweet that you are sentimental about places you were with your family and made memories. You are a content creator and may have thought or done this already, but I suggest you take pictures of all the places you have pleasant memories. Why? Because the next time you go back there it may not be there any longer. I have experienced that a few times over the years. A favorite restaurant my grandmother took me burned down during a horrible forest fire. Our barn that my grandpa built for us collapsed this year from the weight of a heavy snow fall. My grandma and grandpa have been gone several years now so losing places that remind me of them really stinks. Take care Matthew.

You might want to micro chip the pets and if they wear collars place something like a "tile" close range locator device on it . It might give you a bit of peace of mind if they happen to jump out on you , you'll have a better shot at getting them back.

FYI. Good call on the Telus update. I have found that Telus and Bell have way better coverage. And, I’m Rogers shy due to the “blip” last summer. I have unlimited data (as of tomorrow) with Bell for $55 per month - but it is slowed after a certain amount - which would be hard for a KZfaqr.

FYI Matthew, when you call Rogers to cancel, ask if they have a "Retention Dept." If so, ask to speak to them and tell them your issues. If a company has such a department, the reps there have the authority to customize services and see what they may offer you to stay. It's a good rule of practice when cancelling any service. Secondly, I don't get the FlyingJ thing. You're a paying customer inside the place! If they have an issue with squatters, then when you pay for a shower they should give you a time-stamped pass to put in your windshield while you're inside. Also, next time I was there and paying, I'd tell the cashier what happened here so she/he will be aware and tell "the boss" in case he/she decides to scout out the parking lot again. Just a thought.

Word of mechanical advice, don't top off the tank like that. The charcoal filter in the evap canister will soak up gas and cause it to fail and give you evap codes. Those things ain't cheap either and are usually buried. When it clicks, its done. Fight the urge to round off lol.

The flying J in Las Vegas is horrible. I guess they have a homeless problem and only allow 4 hour parking then they bang on your door and yell at you. Facilities are only available to those with commercial licenses aka truckers.
