Avoid the first race of the day, don’t hug the barrier, slash the reins if you crash - and you just might make it through your first day driving a chariot in the Circus Maximus.
For a safer approach to ancient history, try my book “Naked Statues, Fat Gladiators, and War Elephants: Frequently Asked Questions about the Ancient Greeks and Romans.”

0:41 "I packed my toga": Obviously the sender of the email did not remember your good advice on clothing as a toga was a sign of citizenship. Therefore upon arrival questions would be asked, he would be prosecuted and as a non-citizen he would probably end up in another favourite spectacle, but as a victim rather than a contender. Your legal disclaimer will save you from prosecution and he will die. RIP standing for "ripped into parts" by some exotic animal or so. Great episode - thanks; and starting to look for your book today ;-)

My Latin lessons were a more recent than that but otherwise I totally agree. If my Latin teacher had actually tried to make his subject mind-numbingly boring he couldn't have done better than he did. It's essentially an interesting era in History and building Latin grammar lessons around it should have been quite possible.

Really great video and just utterly fascinating, thank you Garrett. Here's one for you: I too have a working time machine -- my main goal is becoming rich in Rome so I can sit back, and relax at the villa, and participate in some of the questionable escapades. My motive is mostly selfishness, which I freely admit. My moral qualms are minimal. When I arrive, I will be broke, so, what is the easiest and fastest way to make it rich, as a complete stranger? What would be the best time period for me to live out my selfishness, without fear of serious ramifications for my desire for pleasure?

By Justinian's day the emperors, or, at least Justinian himself, favored the blues. During the Nika riots he sent a messenger, the eunuch Narses, into the Hippodrome, which had been occupied by the rioters, to seek out the leaders of the Blue faction to remind them of the emperors favor towards them and to hand them a big bag of gold coin. The men got the message, signaled to their minions, and left the stadium before Belisaurius and Mundus blocked the exits and had their soldiers wade into the crowd to slaughter them. Good times.
