I know this is a very old comment, but fun fact: despite it being his second name, Tolkien went by the name Ronald

I think the fact that Tom's "power" comes from his voice, is a clue to his origins. He is "the master" so when he commands you, you listen, simple as that. Also, his constant singing is relevant. I've always liked the idea that he is a physical embodiment of the Ainulindale.
@Mithreniel
@Mithreniel 4 жыл бұрын
Gracious, you're right. He does show similarities with the Ainulindale and Tolkien never really mentions how old he really is.

Is the “Ainulindale” the music of the Ainur? I just watched a video that talked about a theory that Tom is the music of the Ainur and I really liked that idea.

Wouldn't strife and discord be a part of Toms "thing" if that were the case?? Because of Melkors part of "The Music"? I honestly think Tom Bombadil is more like what Goldberry says about him to Frodo.. he just simply "Is"

@@Ubermensch201 You're correct! I've changed my mind, and have an interesting opinion of Ol' Tom. It'd just take like 3 paragraphs, that I don't think anyone would read.

Tom flipped the ring in the air and laughed at it. Frodo put the ring on and slipped away, but Tom saw him. Then Tom was disappeared from the movie.

Tom doesn't advance the main plot significantly, which is why he is cut out of the adaptions. However, yes, he does "fight" twice on behalf of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. When the hobbits leave the Shire (and before they reach Bree), they enter the Old Forest next to the Shire. They are assaulted by an evil tree named Old Man Willow. Tom saves them with his mysterious magical powers (sending Old Man Willow back to tree-like "sleep"). After the hobbits spend the night at the residence of Tom and Goldberry, they head off towards Bree, but are captured by a Barrow Wight, an undead being that intends to sacrifice them. Tom once again saves them with his magical powers, defeating the undead being, and gives each of the hobbits an enchanted dagger taken from the Barrow Wight's horde. Tom cannot accompany the hobbits on their quest, possibly because his powers are rooted in the Old Forest (though this is not entirely clear.) The hobbits finally make it to Bree. In the movie, Aragorn gives the hobbits some daggers just before they are attacked by the Ringwraiths at Amon Sul. That was the cheaty way of making sure they had daggers. It was actually Tom who gave them the daggers, and Merry eventually ends up stabbing the Lord of the Nazgul with one of them, allowing Eowyn to deliver the killing blow. It may have been the enchantments on the dagger that allowed this to happen. But this is a subtle detail, and not really necessary for the movies.

This was supposedly recorded in August 1952. The version of the poem in this recording is the one published by Tolkien in 1962, not the original 1934 version.

So this is Mr Tolkien's voice. He certainly sounded to be a delightful fellow. I once bought the Hobbit from one of our news agents years ago, but I had barely begun to read it. I have a number of books that I have yet to read including mangs too. Anyway, this video is nice, the poem is good and entertaining!}:>]

My belief is that Tom Bombadil is the embodiment of the music without Melkor's discord. That is why he is so innocent and unconcerned and why he is immune to the ring.

“You let me out agin old man willow, I’m stiff lying here, there no sort of pillow your hard crooked roots. Drink your river water! Go back to sleep again, like the river daughter!” Willow man let him loose when he heard him speaking, locked fast his wooden house muttering and creaking whispering outside the tree. Out from Willowdingle tom went walking on, up the Withywindle.

Honestly, the number of things redacted for the movie is bothersome and significant. Yes, this fellow and his merry house were taken, but so were Fatty and the wizard's dwarf assistants. We love the added bantering, the vision, and the action. We love the score that moved us, and we thank old Peter Jackson. But giving us more characters to cherish in The Hobbit cannot excuse how rude and rough he was, which makes it hard to drop it. Still and all, I love the work he did. He gave a generation a reason to pick up and read a work worth veneration. He wandered through the Elven lands, and Mordor gave us chills. Perhaps we can forgive the slip of absent Bombadil. But sadder still than all the rest, than all who did not there appear, was the treatment I detest of the hero Faramir. He did not so nearly take the ring, he did not relish pain, he always behaved as a king, and so I must complain. The Jacksonine portrayal, when I see it, aches my heart. Boromir fell to betrayal, though redeemed by valiant art. It was Faramir who, unfailing, less martial, yet more wise, set the hobbits free and hale and undeserving was despised. It was poignant reading Denethor's disdain and deep offense, knowing he valued the warrior beyond the better prince. Old Tom Bombadil was tricky, Fatty Bolger was a friend, but the absence I find stickiest is Faramir free from sin. He was unjustly maligned, Jackson made him as his brother, but when when reading him, we find, he was greater than the other. So in all my rhyming ranting, take but this from what I've pinned: I love Tolkien's world, his characters, his values. Now I end.

Tolkien wrote the first version of this, which is very similar (he wears a peacock, rather than swan, feather in is hat), in 1934, before he even published The Hobbit. So where, do you think, Tom comes from?

Tolkien's posterior? (Just kidding. No kill I.) The Hobbit wasn't even part of the same world as that of the Silmarillion, originally. So, Tom is outside of Silmarillion understanding. Tolkien never tried to explain Tom in those terms.

I read a theory that Tom is basically Tolkien. Just an observer, who isn't concerned with the ring, no answer as to where he came from. Isn't mention in the great song. So it makes sense maybe Tolkien wrote himself in. Tom loves nature, poems and singing. Just like a certain author.

Douglas Jenkins Incorrect - Christopher Tolkien owns some rights to Tolkien's works, and the rest (including Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) are owned by Tolkien Enterprises. That being said, I bet this isn't owned by either, but by either HarperCollins Audio Books (who purchased Caedmon Records, who in turn released a collection of Tolkien reading his works) or by George Sayer (who recorded him reading some of his works and kept the tapes!). The odds of anyone coming after someone with a copyright claim are distant, though. I would suggest stiull sticking to fair use (for academic work or criticism), though.

Who is this Tom Bombadil? and why was he not in the movie`(correct me if i am wrong) does he live near the hobbits?
@masonwilley2327
@masonwilley2327 6 жыл бұрын
Bombadil was one of the Eldar (from The Silmarilion). Whilst he was a very engaging fellow in LOR, he actually sticks out like a sore thumb, and has no part in the story. This is doubtless why he was omitted from both the movie trilogy (OK I know it's strictly not a trilogy), and the BBC audio recordings. He appears early on in The Fellowship of the Ring, which places him close to the Shire.

So why does Frodo mention him, at the counsil at Elronds house? he says to give him the ring right? And why does Gandalf talk against it? And why does Gandalf visit Tom Bombadil in the end, he must have known this Tom i guess? Eldar? meaning what? is Gandalf or Saruman and eldar?
@Eudaimonist
@Eudaimonist 6 жыл бұрын
Tom is NOT one of the Eldar! Tom is unique and unclassified. Anyway, Gandalf respects Tom -- to an extent. Tom is powerful and wise in his own way, but also not someone one should trust with a One Ring. Gandalf argues that while Tom is perhaps the most powerful good being in Middle-earth, at least within the confines of his small territory, he just isn't serious enough a personality not to throw away the One Ring on a whim.

"Anyway, Gandalf respects Tom -- to an extent" well he went back to Tom in the end , so i guess the respect is big? but the books never mention what he did in Toms home? "Gandalf argues that while Tom is perhaps the most powerful good being in Middle-earth, at least within the confines of his small territory, he just isn't serious enough a personality not to throw away the One Ring on a whim." He does not care about the rings? What about his wife? Is she one of the elves or something?
@Eudaimonist
@Eudaimonist 6 жыл бұрын
He certainly does care about his wife, more than just about anything else. No, Goldberry is not an elf. She is another difficult-to-classify being, but there are hints that she is some sort of spirit related to the weather or changes of the seasons, and of course to the river and its reeds, since she is the River-Daughter. But I think that the BEST answer is that she is, like Tom, a character from Tolkien's poetry that he decided to plunk into LOTR without explanation.

Yeah. I like the theory that he's a spirit made from the Songs from Eru and the Valar in the making of the world. I do, though, feel like there are parallels between Tom and JRR's Christian perception of Jesus/God. Tom's great though, I love the dude!
