In this BTS (Behind the Scenes) video I share the story of my experience trekking to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat in Meghalaya. I did this trek in May 2017. My experience wasn't very great, but hopefully the information in this video will enable some of you to have a more pleasant experience when you do the trek from Tyrna to Nongriat in Meghalaya.

Appreciate the fact that you did not generalized the state of Meghalaya and the Northeast at large as being bad prior to this particular bad experience that you had.. infact the positive response of yours by saying you will visit again in future is something to be learnt by all of us. You are indeed a Gem! The THALAIVA!!👍 Love & Respect from Nagaland.

Fortunately, I had a pretty good experience, when I went in 2014, with some friends from Shillong. Didn't stay there overnight, and came back the same day. But yes, the trek is absolutely brutal; especially whilst climbing back up. Next time you go, try and do the David Scott Trail, which doesn't have as much climbing, as compared to walking. We'd done that the previous day, which is probably why we were so knackered during our trek to the double decker living root bridge. And check out Cafe Sohra (previously known as Cafe Cherrapnujee) for really nice accommodation and food. It's run by a gentleman named Alan West, who took great care of us.

In my recent trip to Tyrna village and after seeing this video and co relating what I had experienced... They have abandoned the second bridge and made a new bridge parallel to that and which is less shaky and a much more wider... To be honest meghalaya experience was underwhelming as compared to sikkim experience... You are right... Talking about monopolising things, sometimes they force you to hire guide which is totally not required... At least till DD living root bridge.. Was watching your old videos rohith in these boring summer days... ❤️

2019 Dec I visited Meghalaya with my friends....from Dawki we went to Shora. My friends wanted to see the double decker bridge but I was not so interested .I told them I saw single root bridge what so great in seeing double decker bridge by going through a hectic trek so I will explore shora . But they forced me to come with them so finally I decided to go. Trust me I would have missed the best part of the trip if I decided to explore Shora by not joining my friends. As Rohit said it was not an an easy task, while going it was kind of ok .We return in same day so the way back to starting point was really tough. Now we will get more homestay options near double decker root bridge.

Hate places where they discriminate based on your nationality. There’s a place like this that I encountered in Baga, Goa “Cavala”. A board put up said it’s only for foreigners & NRI’s. Nice place, but never went there again. Nice video Ro... eagerly waiting for the next.

Agree to all the aspects you highlighted. All these can make or break the experience and feel you have while visiting a place. Fortunately for me while I was traveling all the places in Meghalaya that you had gone to the experience was surreal. When I think back, it always brings a smile on my face. One thing I have to mention here is that, I was traveling in the off season, so that might be a reason for lesser traffic and finding accommodation. I hope that you come back again and experience the positive side of this place. 🙂

@tollfreetraveller Great and honest vlog👍🏽 Sorry to hear about the bad experience you had to face. Meghalaya is a place where you must find someone who can guide you. Even for us locals we sometimes have to hire a professional guides to go about. So I’d suggest you to atleast talk to someone from Meghalaya before planning a trip here so that you’ll get the best out of the trip. Feel free to contact me if you’re planning to come to Meghalaya again 😊 I hope you’ll have a better experience next time. And yes you must visit the Rainbow Falls it is really amazing 😍

It's absolutely true, the people you encounter along the way make the places more memorable and unfortunately can at times sour the experience too. One trick i use is to ask myself why would someone do what they did...like in your example why would he offer accommodation to the foreigners and not to you...may be because his place was better suited for a group where he could charge accordingly and earn extra in food etc. Not that this makes things better but it sure does give a perspective.

Excellent BTS, And when we hear it from master storyteller it's awesome. Two different kinds of experience from two extremes. One all the way to west in Kashmir valley, 👍. and the other all the way to the east in Meghalaya ☹️. But the silver lining is that one of the comment from Meghalaya regrets for your experience and welcomes you again...👍

In the actual video Double Deker Bridge, when you were struggling to climb down from the stairs I remember one local guy passed very fast, may be that's how they do climb up and down regularly, probably from that point of view locals said "The trek isn't too difficult" but I'm not sure it's an assumption.

Fun vid. I have known a lot of people from a lot of countries. There seems to be some prejudice for some group in every culture. So it goes. Water looked SOOOOOO refreshing. That first bridge...you got bigger b*lls than me - I would have turned back right then and there. And that bridge you took the bike over a bunch of videos back ("only two motorcycles at a time") had me cringing. Beautiful, but very scary. Keep going and remember why you started.

Meghalaya is a beautiful state and it is 190km away from my place.. You'll find good people out there but near tourist attractions they'll just try to extract more money.. so that's the reason you didn't like it. Otherwise it's a good place with good people and too much modified cars 😁

Blud, lemme tell you something that you already know, a constantly increasing number of Indians have lost the concept of ethics and honesty and empathy. Everyone here wants to make a quick extra buck at the expense of hurting us physically or psychologically or both. Hotels to restaurants to plumbers to puncture repair people all want a quick extra buck rather than being proud of great service they should provide at a agreed reasonable fee. Regards Joy 💕
