Sgt Chambers is famous among the LRRP's. So intelligent, well spoken and a wonderful representative of these brave men who were rarely given their due and the respect they deserved. Thassnk you, Sgt. Chambers.

If some guy signed up to do whatever I told him, and I told him to do something awful like set your house on fire, should people get mad at me, the guy who signed up to take my orders, or both of us? Without the soldiers enabling the politicians it wouldn't matter what horrible inhumane plans they came up with. I understand not making that connection when you're an idealistic teenager getting a draft notice and going where they tell you, but other young people at the time were treating it as a real dilemma, fleeing the country or going to jail on the basis of their (now largely vindicated) conviction that Vietnam was a horrible, stupid conflict to support. Sgt Chambers's objection here is largely over what the service members in country had to endure compared to the nice cushy lives these kids were living, but he also makes the point that Vietnam ended not because of a military defeat but because of waning political support, a lot of which should be attributed to the anti-war movement. How many thousands of servicemembers were spared the experience the Sergeant had over there because of these kids and their "ignorance"?

First and foremost: Thank you for your service. We civilians owe you a debt that cannot be repaid. I am an anti war civilian who will never understand how anyone can blame the soldiers that WE sent into battle. Can anyone explain to me the thinking of one who would blame the soldier? That's not a rhetorical question. I don't get it. Do they think we don't need a military? Others think it's the government that sends our people to fight where they shouldn't. Government does crazy stuff, but only the crazy stuff that will get them reelected. If the public allows it, they need to know that ignorance does not absolve them of responsibility. If you don't know history, then you condemn us all to repeat it.

I've admired the brief bits of interviews with you that I've seen so far. I would, however, like to make a couple of points counter to your experience of the anti-war movement. Personally, I joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War upon my return from a three year enlistment, 26 months of which were at the 249th Medevac. I knew something about the sacrifices daily made... as did every other member of the VVAW. We knew, and so did most of the student opposition, to the war. We knew about the horseshit politics involved and, later, about the specifics of the nauseating deals, the motivations and profits being made by the politicians and arms merchants. In a country where civilians have the duty to control the military, what was the duty of those of us with those understandings?

I don’t mind protesting the politicians... but when you spit and sneer at returning soldiers who laid down their lives for our country (good war or bad war) you’ve crossed the line and are worse than a pile of dog shit.
@markkoons7488
@markkoons7488 3 жыл бұрын
@@cajunpipesmoker1519 I'll buy that and I think anyone who would treat or even think of a soldier that way has no concept at all of the sacrifices made. Even as a returning medic who took a three year enlistment to be a field medic, I was called a fascist by a smug little draft dodger at the University of Wisconsin. That's been more than 50 years ago and the injustice of it still cuts.

Hooah Sarge. At this late date you bring new clarity to the outcome of the Viet Nam War. Now I understand WHO lost the war. The ARVN lost, not the USA Army! THE POLITICAL ASPECT of the war plus the so called Vietnamazation was responsible for our leaving Viet Nam. I was on active duty during Jan / June 1960 & active reserves till Dec 1965. They often said we would be deployed to Nam but the 77 Infantry Div, 10 Armored Recon was never activated until after I was Discharged In Dec 1965!

America attemped to invade North Vietnam. The NVA and VC pushed them back. Sounds like a defeat to me. You can talk about how withdrawing was a political decision all you want but that decision was made because of the bodies, because of the money, because of public opinion. It was one of the first asymmetrical wars and a war of attrition and the Vietnamese held on longer. I do think it's asinine to blame to soldiers (especially considering most were drafted) but at the same time how can compare the daily life of a soldier to that a protesting civilian when said civilian is protesting that said soldiers are over there at all and they didn't need to be. That's a ridiculous line of thinking. Like I said though, directing anger towards soldiers who didn't volunteer for the war is insensitive and cowardly. A lot of folks from that time period may defend America's actions in the war but most historians would regard the Vietnam war as a huge blunder and embarrassing defeat of the American military. I have no idea how someone could defend that war. Not sure when Vietnam did anything to us (look up Gulf of Tonkin incident and what actually happened before saying anything. Even if it did go down like we said it did we still had no business there. What would America do if Iran had ships off the coast of Florida?). The greatest irony of all this is that to this day Vietnam still is under the rule of their communist party but at the same time they're one of the few countries that actually like America. Liberia, South Korea, Vietnam rank highest in the world when it comes to the general pop. view of America. Absurd as the war itself. I'd like to also mention I can criticize the war without insulting this guy. I don't really think much of him except he seems very intelligent and he probably woulda been more useful to this country in public service or something or the sorts instead of being stationed in the middle of a jungle all because of some ideological pissing contest. I don't pity him, not saying that, but I do feel sorry for him. He shoulda been one of those people he was talking about, going to movies, restaurants, sleeping in a nice bed after.

God doesn't make freedom possible. The free will he gave us coupled with the bravery and sacrifices made by those using their free will to make decisions and take action is what makes freedom possible.
