What’s left after playing and writing your way through Ireland, Scotland and America? For TGJ Senior Editor Tom Coyne, it’s settling down and falling in love with a golf course that needs some. Alongside his new superintendent Shaun Smith, Tom details how he became the owner of Sullivan County Golf Club in Liberty, NY, how they’re turning it around, and how it all ties into his next book, A Course Called Home.

@coynewriter legendary effort! And an exciting story to come. A deeply personal and spiritual golf journey. Said ‘spiritual golf journeys’ seem to find you, and you find them Tom. Never give up on golf and golf will never give up on you, is the vibe I got from ‘a course called Ireland

I have played Golf there and played on the Golf course as a kid, one of my best friend's house is off the 6th hole. We sledded down off the hill at the woods on the right side of 3 down over 4 and into the creek across 5. I am happy to see you guys are looking to improve the course. I want to play again but, it will depend on your clubhouse worker and his attitude towards Locals. I have heard disturbing stories about shifting prices for a round by guys that have gone a few times. Little things that are big annoyances when trying to have a mindful game. No outside drinks yet no Bar/restaurant to buy?

They have snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non) to buy in the clubhouse. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly when I was there and I'm looking forward to seeing the place thrive again for locals and non-locals.

Sorry about that Michael. There may have been some price confusion as rates shifted around during the transition. I came in in May so it was late to learn the new system but we are running smoothly now and I'm confident the course is in a condition that is more than worth the price. The alternative to the price bumps (modest, in my opinion) is no golf course in Liberty anymore. And that would be a great shame. We aren't trying to make money -- I'm trying to keep the doors open and offer an improved product of which the community can be ptour. And our pro shop guys are the best -- all locals and could not be more welcoming. I'd put them up against any staff in golf when it comes to how much they care about this place -- from greens to pro shop, it's a community effort.

The 9 hole layout may be the most unappreciated thing in USA golf. These courses need to be understood for what they offer and not what they’re missing. There’s a great opportunity to grow the game for locals and tourists alike. Best of luck, Gents. Btw.. Tom, if you’re confused now, just wait until next April, when NYS shows up wanting your tax payment! Hold your wallet, Ha! Hopefully, see you soon

Enjoyed the conversation and insights. What is the cost of a national membership for BTS members? Likely to only visit this area once every 5 years.

Also this story is very cool and all. But it still doesn’t exactly justify it being the most expensive course in the area now. 18 holes with a cart is $65 on the weekends if I’m correct? That’s more than double what it was last year if I remember correctly. Many courses in the area that are true 18 hole courses and better maintained are $55 for 18 and the cart maximum. I understand you’re not a publicly owned course and you’re trying to make money for improvements which I fully support but as Mike Epstein explained above the cheaper price rates for first time players there or “non-locals” has made the locals who want to play there feel like they’re getting ripped off. If you wanna do something like that, that’s fine but at least do it legitimately with a coupon or something. Don’t just let people walk in and say “oh yeah this is my first time here” when it isn’t just so they can get a cheaper price for being dishonest. Hope you can turn the course around but the prices are so steep I know people who wanted to get a membership there and after seeing the new pricing decided not too.

Thanks for your comment and sorry you feel that way. It costs $20 to walk nine holes during the week. Is that too steep? We had to raise some greens fees during peak times in order to try and keep the course going. It wasn't going to open this year but it is open and has a chance for survival. It isn't really about improving the course right now -- it's about covering taxes, insurance, payroll -- all things the previous greens fee scheme didn't cover. Lost money for the last five years but we've got a chance to sustain golf in Liberty NY. Trust me, no money is going into my pocket from the operation of the golf course! Rather, I've invested my time and money to try to keep it going. If one buys a membership -- very reasonable -- the golf for the year is FREE. $550 for a year of all your golf is so far below standard club dues that I do feel confident about the pricing structure. The nonlocals do NOT get cheaper greens fees. They can purchase a cheaper membership if they live outside the area -- so they pay $400 to play the course once or twice or not at all (we have members signing up from Europe and all over America) which helps underwrite the golf of the people who do live in the area and actually use the course. Our focus is entirely on finding ways to keep this place running for the local community. But with rising cost of labor and fuel and equipment, we did have to look at our budget. I think locals will find that our prices are well worth the golf they are getting now.
