I just noticed something for the first time. At 2:16 the callsigns stenciled on the F-14 in frame say Maverick/Merlin. In the original draft of the movie's script, Goose was Cougar's RIO and Merlin (earlier called Wizard, I believe) was Maverick's (as Goose was the best RIO in the squadron paired with the then "best pilot"), and they got paired together when Cougar turned in his wings. Amazing what high definition brings out. Also, whoever's in the back seat in that shot is wearing Maverick's helmet. Yet at 2:41, so can clearly see Pete Mitchell and Nick Bradshaw mirrored under the canopy.

@@rcslyman8929 The Indian Ocean was selected because it was far enough away from any belligerent nation at the time that no one could say the movie was demonizing them. The original "bad guys" were meant to be the North Koreans, and the incident at the end is a nod to that as the disabled "Communications Ship S.S. Layton" is a not-so-subtle nod to the USS Pueblo incident. Also, the Soviets used to operate out of Communist Vietnam all the time to harass BARCAPs with MiGs while carriers were working their way through that region.

My question has always been - Is that flip at 2:28 areonautically possible to keep sustained at such close range?

probably would be complicated on its own but you gotta also worry about the posibility of the rudders hitting each other

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8qgkpSkvb7VhH0.html If done by pilots who train to do just that, possibly. Looks like the rudders could hit as said above, but the video I linked is Blue Angels, who obviously do just that. Super dangerous of course.

Fun fact. In the early drafts the "Enemy Nation" was supposed to actually be North Korea

I shot down 2 Mig-28's. I remember it well, we were at 30,000 feet, deep over Poon Tang, North of the DMZ. We were in deep, and we had to act...

Only in movies US pilots can do stunts like this.

Yeah, in real life the last time F-14 Tomcats were flying with Migs, they shot the migs down. Because Libyan pilots sucked.

It does look pretty difficult. You could also check out the "Blue Angels" if you want to see other aerial maneuvers like that performed.

@Arun Sathyan Name checks out. You have no idea what you're talking about. Politicians say "go kill Afghans", so they did. Politicians said "ok, now come back", so they did. BTW, "Afghani" is a currency. "Afghan" is the people. Go to school.

man i wish they actually had MIGs on their sets but sadly definately no nation was just gonna give up their (at the time) 'soviet' jets at the time so we get F5s instead
