What a beautiful sail, well done Capt Cunliffe, all good advice as always, and you can't go wrong with a good curry or a delicious steak and kidney pie. And let's not start on about those Cornish pasties from the Cornish Cove Tearoom in beautiful Port Isaac in Cornwall, they are THE best! This was a re-watch for me, needed to be reminded of some good classic sailing, here in already-hot Florida, and you never fail to provide it, cheers!

Hysterical....force 10 curry...now THAT'S a curry! Fray Bentos Steak and KidneyPie....it keeps for about 20,000 years and cooks wonderfully....no hassle, just bung it in the oven and Bob's your uncle. I use them all the time and always have a selection in case of a nuclear winter. If I ever attempt to cross the Pacific in a yacht...Fray Bentos Pies will be my absolute best friend.

Absolutely brilliant, chuckled all the way through the clip. Tom makes a day on a boat seem so simple, and his logic makes perfect sense. Fray bentos and tinned spuds...you certainly know how to treat a lady. Love it!

I've only just come across you and I'm loving your videos. My earliest memories was sharing a fray bentos pie and a tin of new potatoes with my dad on his boat. I'm 32 now and have lived on little 24ft sailing boats for 4 years and just brought a 38ft steel yacht that I'm just starting a refit on. My aim is to get to the med by the end of summer, fingers crossed.

Good luck with the refit - and be sure to provision her with some 'Snake and Pygmy' pies. Tom

Love it, we always have a Fray Bentos pie in the cupboards just in case or if we can't be bothered to do much cooking. Haven't got an oven on my boat, just 2 x burners unfortunately.

Thanks Tom, Love all your vids you remind me of my first camping experience 52 years ago with my old school mate Graham Bond. We had canvas sheet on a bed of bracken and another strung up in the trees in the forest of dean. We bought one of the said steak and kidney tin pies from a shop in Cinderford, ran back to our camp, lighting a fire, and placed it on top where about half an hour later it exploded showering us in meat and gravey. My cooking has not improved neither my spelling, but I do remove the lids before cooking now

What’s wrong with a bit of motor, eh? Makes me think of that lovely story of the two young sailors in a pub, arguing about which is the best way to sail into a wind. They can’t make their minds up so they decide to ask an old salt at the next table, bent over his pint and pipe. The old boy looks them in the eye with all the wisdom of his rough years at sea in his face and says: “A 100 HP diesel”! Hope you eventually got into the S & K pie! Nice filming, Ros!

I'd like to try a Force 10 curry!! Out here on the West Coast of the Colonies, we use a red chili sauce called Sriracha to spice things up! And great sailing, too!
@markmuller88295 жыл бұрын
I have always used the iron mainsail when needed precisely in the sort of situation you experienced - ensuring you make landfall before sunset, especially in an unknown port or anchorage. It's simply the safe thing to do. Another benefit is that you can point a bit higher when motor sailing with main and jib sheeted tight, which can make a big difference if your destination is to windward. I would always rather sail but as you say, the boat is carrying a big lump of metal so it needs to pay its way and earn its keep sometimes.

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns Thanks Tom. BTW, I've had a copy of your 3rd edition 'The Complete Yachtmaster' since it came out 19 years ago and I always recommended it to my students. It is concise, well set out and pretty much covers everything that an aspiring yachtmaster needs to build on...... I'm enjoying your vlogs, particularly the ones cruising the Baltic, as that has been on my cruising bucket list for over 15 years.

A Mason 44 , a fabulous boat , I thought I had the only Mason in the UK ! I had the Mason 33 , she sailed like a dream And the quality was second to none .But age creeps up on everybody , I now sail my Twister28 "Florence May" out of Torquay And cover Brittany and the Channel Islands this year it's scilly , fair winds Roger
@maxflight7773 жыл бұрын
Roger, a friend of mine has a twister. He loves it to bits, it’s particularly good single handed and he packs in loads of nautical miles up and down the west cost of Scotland.

I'm delighted that Tom does just what I did a few weeks ago. I felt I was committing a sailing crime starting up the motor to make headway on a passage instead of tacking and taking the punishment.

In the early 1960s when I was an apprentice on a Glasgow tramp ship. I happened to be on the bridge when the 2nd mate put the 1200 ship's time position on the chart. I said "Is that where we were at noon" and he said " No, That's where we thought we might be because you can never be absolutely sure of where you are". Obviously pre Satnav but very good advice...even today !.

Oh nice, we used to chuck a couple tins of beans in a braking tray first then pop the old Freys on top, haul and shoot a string of sixty crab pots and we would have a nice hot lunch to have, great on a scuffly south westerlie drizzle bound day in the shipping lanes north of Alderney

nice vid..searching my old memory now..isn't there advice on rights of way referring to being "abaft the beam"? cheers!
@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns5 жыл бұрын
2 points abaft the beam makes the approaching vessel an overtaking vessel who must therefore keep clear.

Thanks and you are welcome and thanks. Do you recall one year at the Fastnet where too many people lost their lives ? I watched a vlog that said all those what died all tried to run before the storm, yet all those that hove-to survived. If that's true then Sailors need to be told about the importance of heaving to, in my humble opinion.
