Delightful! The thought of altering the trim of the yacht by moving bags of smokeless coal around just tickles me. The burner looks great. I always say lighting a fire and sitting beside it is food for the soul...it lifts your spirits like nothing else. As an aside, I just watched the 3D reconstruction of the Titanic and was surprised to see open coal fire places in the lounges...just like you'd use at home.

I lived on a narrowboat for some years. After the first winter using a gas heater I got a stove just like yours and used a cast iron drain pipe for the flu. I was moored close to a timberyard and got offcuts so free energy. Once a friend put his old trainers in the stove and the flue went red all the way up, it was too hot to stay in the cabin! Now I have a GRP yatcht under renovation so this inspires me to fit one, need to work out that deck vent, I love the stainless flu, yes reminds me of an old motorbike.

I have an American made Fatsco Pet Stove, made from cast iron and marine grade stainless steel. Its designed to burn charcoal, and I use smokeless charcoal briquettes, though it will obviously burn anything combustible. My priority was for a compact stove which produces a good heat output, a seeming contradiction, but the stove certainly does produce good, dry heat! Boat owners, especially liveaboards were familiar with the Fatsco Stoves and their reviews helped me to decide. That I find it to be a thing of beauty is an additional bonus and I even found a cast iron pot with lid which fits! I agree that a solid fuel stove is an essential thing to have and I now also have a collapsible titanium tent stove with a roll up stovepipe which hugely improves the quality of life in winter camp.

I made my decision to but the Fatsco coal/ wood burner TinyTot stove. I purchased stainless stove pipe & fittings from Seattle Marine, online and from Fatsco bought the stove top accessory pot or pan platform..its a beautiful little workhorse.
@felixcat9318
@felixcat9318 Жыл бұрын
@@canyonhaverfield2201 Beautiful choice, the Fatsco double hob with fiddle rail is gorgeous, and I seriously thought about getting one, but I love my Pet Stove as is. The equally beautiful Tiny Tot might give longer burn times, but for me, compact size was the deciding factor, and nothing beats the Pet Stove for being compact. These aren't as well known as other stoves, but for quality, capability, compactness and value for money, nothing comes close to Fatsco Stoves!

My granddad used to love a solid fuel fire, and said it "warmed your bones like no other heat" ... at the time (I was maybe 8 or 9) I was puzzled how one heat could differ from another, but now I know he was correct, and look forward to installing such a thing on my "escape" boat. Thanks again Tom, you're a star as always.

I installed a vintage Tortoise Stove - size 0 - on my 40 year old westerly Konsort. The best thing that I ever did. I modified it to include a grate, so that it can be kept going continuously. I also burn smokeless fuel briquettes - perfect. I installed it 10 years ago - no problems at all - I have a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm for peace of mind. I recall one winter with 3 inches of snow in the cockpit and 80 degrees in the cabin - WITH THE WASHBOARDS OUT !! Perfect for a winter anchorage on the Crouch.

Yes, many thanks Tom. I love a nice old Jack Tar stove, with a Charlie Noble on deck. You used to pour water into a wee circular trough around the deckhead fitting up topsides to cool the flue... Cleaning out the coal ash - when you couldn't find what they used to be call 'coke' (!) - could be a dirty job unless you were careful; ash from drift wood was cleaner. Love the yarn about the spin off benefits of coal, and the rummaging gang! Keep up the good work Tom. Cheers, William.

All my old boats had those magic deck fittings with the water trough. You don't seem to see them any more. You are right about the ash, but now that I've graduated to a re-chargeable on-board vacuum cleaner, (Dyson no less!) the dust holds no horrors. I used to be a dab hand with the soft brush and the dustpan.

I lived aboard force 6 years on my sailboat in NYC, but I was still working at the time. I heated it with a dickinson diesel stove which worked great. Due to the fact that it was plumbed right to the main fuel tank, it would run for 5 or 6 days at a time before I had to add fuel. Solid fuel stoves like this provide great warmth, but the downside is, if your lifestyle requires you to be way from the boat for 10 or 12 hours at a time like mine did, that fire is going to go out long before you get home in which case you come home to a very cold boat. And if it is VERY cold, you may bust your water lines if they freeze.

Hi Tom. You mention writing for Classic Boat. Having a clear out today and came across a bunch of pull out magazines published by Yachting Monthly called Practical Seamanship in which you write extensively. Particularly enjoyed your make believe account of a passage north around Anglesey which you wrote for the March 1987 edition. You'll be pleased to know that, just like stoves, the tide hasn't changed and still runs at four knots along the North coast. I have issues 1 to 11. Don't know whether they published any others, but they are full of wisdom and merit re-publishing. Cheers Simon

I agree with your sentiments, although Marihøna has a Dickinsons Newport, ( no room for coal and wood) which burns anything like paraffin, diesel, Avturb, central heating oil, random thinners/white spirit, all sorts really. I also am amazed that ALL yachts don't have heating! Nice and windy here in SE Norway, but sunny, so deck paint going on..fair winds Jerry

Hi Jerry I like the sound of the Dickinsons. If it burns anything liquid bar water, it'll be the stove for me when I finally give up on chucking the ashes over the side. I've been served vodka in old Leningrad that would have kept us warm on many a frowzy night! Windy up here too. Making a pass for Finland today. Tom

Hard coal as ballast, interesting idea. And that stove is nice and compact. A nice "dry" heat too, propane or LP creates a lot of moisture. Diesel has its own drawbacks. Near impossible to find coal here in Americal. BBQ lump charcoal is about the next thing, but it'll take up space.

America has anthracite coal in Pennsylvania, the very best coal to burn. No smell, no smoke, little ash. can be bought in bags and shipped yo you.

For some reason I couldn't answer the query about whether it's charcoal I'm burning. It is definitely not charcoal. If you put this stuff on a bbq it would never light. It's a form of reconstituted anthracite we use in the UK in enclosed stoves. Keep warm!

Coal? I can get good-quality lump charcoal, but it's expensive. But here in the US it's nigh-impossible to get heating coal retail, ...especially good hard Anthracite furnace coal.

We've had a 'cubic grizzly' for the last three years livingaboard in the UK...it's truly amazing! Mostly we burn wood...it keeps the whole boat warm and very dry. Quite amazing in a plasticboat! Great for cooking on too....

I had to google a 'cubic grizzly'. What a smashing little stove and a brilliant answer to keeping warm. What do you do about the chimney outlet? Tom

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns Hi Tom The Cubic-mini Grizzly has a three-inch flue. We came to the conclusion that none of the UK's standard double wall flue systems are suitable. If we went with Dinak, for example, not only would it be very large in outside diameter (using one-inch rock-wool for insulation) but it would take nine pieces (Grizzly, boiler adapter, single wall tube, single to double wall adapter, double wall tube, elbow, double-wall adjustable tube, elbow, double-wall adjustable tube, double-wall to single wall adapter, Dickinson deck fitting) and would need locking straps at every junction. So... thinking outside the box... it seemed to us that all we had here was 4 foot of 3 in diameter stainless tubing, with two bends, swaged at the Grizzly end and expanded at the Dickinson end. We thought that lots of exhaust manufacturers and pipe benders should be able to fabricate that for us. But we were wrong. Three-inches is just too big for their tooling. In the end I had the flue made out of 2mm thick, 3in diameter, 316 stainless. It required two 33 degree bends on a 500mm bend radius. I only found one company in the UK that had the tooling off-the-shelf to do this (tubecraft.co.uk). We recommend them highly. We didn't swage the ends (again nobody could do it) but used crimping and sleeving because we need it to be able to take up the expansion as it gets hot. We used 10mm pyrogel blanket for insulation (www.aerogel.com/products-and-solutions/pyrogel-xte/) and 4in diameter stainless steel Polylock tubing for cladding (www.flexiducting.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/PolyLock_Data.pdf). It keeps the flue from getting too bulky and works well. The flue is very strong yet easy to take apart to clean. We used a standard Dickinson stove fitting through the deck (on a 2-inch high built-up fibreglass plinth) and custom-fabricated pyrogel-insulated flue pipes above the deck with a Dickinson H-fitting at the top. This nestles beside our "granny bars" at the mast and is rock solid and well away from all running rigging. Throughout we stuck to Hetas guidelines for canal boats for the hearth and insulation (calcium silicate insulation board, cement board, air gaps, tiles, etc) which we faced with 2-mm stainless steel sheet fabricated by a guy who makes commercial kitchen equipment in Torquay. Overall, it cost £3,500 although most of the work I did myself. The Cubic-mini Grizzly plus spares and a roaster amounted to only about £750 of that. We thought we had massively over-engineered it, until we lit it up and found that its claim to put out over 4kw was no exaggeration. Now, a couple of years later and after much use, we are absolutely delighted with it. It burns cleanly (virtually no smoke except when starting up), no tar in the flue, brilliant dehumidifier, and cooks amazingly well. It’s such a cheery presence on the boat that our only regret is that we haven’t had more cold weather in which to use it! Certainly makes you think harder about high-latitude adventure. PS I picked up this question via Google in which you replied to my wife's note (on a youTube video perhaps?) asking about how we fitted the Cubic Mini in our Bowman 40. Then - of course - I couldn't find where to get back to you on Google messaging or whatever it was. So I sent you an email via your web site... and promptly found where to reply to you here. If you reply to that email I can send pictures.

Wonderful thoughts. Could you give us novices some hint's and tips wrt solid fuel stoves ? Would be interested in the installation process, and the issue of a burning stove underway (like fumes and protection of lines/sheets on the chimney). Thanks.

Well,I have no desire to sail,but.. I enjoy Van camping and want to get a coal stove that would have a 12" (30cm) footprint to heat in the winter because I can buy charcoal for grilling without lighting fluid in it,just about anywhere, anytime of year.. like your design.. and a great story teller.. I bet you have quite a few

Perfect. I have a Hampshire Heaters Charcoal stove on my Rival 32 as not enough room for a coal stove. It is like the old Pansy Heaters. Lovely heat and lasts for hours. Advantage of a small flue too. Better than any hot air heater IMO. Andy UK
