Our piercing Hubble Telescope Of Truth scans the rock and roll heavens to see what new patterns emerge, among them …
… running into Rod Stewart at a friend’s funeral.
… the priceless spectacle of rock critics dancing.
... Prefab Sprout and the fine art of bathos - “We were songbirds, we were Greek Gods, we were singled out by fate/We were quoted out of context - it was great!”
… the best songs about being in a band.
… Jackson Browne’s Running On Empty (and its hymn to self-love).
… King Kong, the most famous movie of all time - and why, like Jaws and Jurassic Park, the special effects now seem creaky but the drama still holds.
… our new pop star category: “dancer-singer”.
... how Tom Hibbert invented a whole new whole method of music journalism (and the only song that could get him on a dancefloor).
… “the crack of the backbeat on Vine Street”.
… and birthday guest Roger Millington on Heroes by David Bowie, the Archers theme tune and anything else that might make a new National Anthem.

Tom Hibbert edited the book The Perfect Collection about the records constituting the perfect record Collection, well worth seeking out and much more fun than Christgau's books.

The answer to the lateness issue is to not go to the shows. If everyone decided to not go to see the late artists they would have to change how they treat their audience.

I attended one Aerosmith concert at the Palace theater, Providence, Rhode Island in May, 1974. This was the start of the " Get your wings," tour. The Providence audience was attended by die hard New England regional Aero-punters. There was a first act- a singer song writer. After that 35 minute nice oppener, the break before Aerosmith, began. An hour passed- no announcement. 1.5 hours...2 hours...At about 2 hours, Aerosmith took the stage. They were fricken wasted! The local audience, seeing the band stagger on to the stage, started BOOING relentless! First song ends- booing; 2nd and third, BOOED for each! Finally band audience created a verbal truce! At that time we had to run to capture that last bus , back to Adquidnick island, Portsmouth, R I,

Jackson Browne had "form" before "Rosie". His track "Redneck Friend" (with a certain Mr R. Dwight moonlighting as "Rockaday Johnnie" on keys) is thinly-veiled paean to his membrum virile 😂

I have some memory about Live Aid ands a delay with Stevie Wonder and some discs were missing causing a delay and the same thing with Madonna in order to allegedly delay going on and building anticipation. Does anyone else remember it?

Tom Hibbert (the world’s funniest music writer) and why Madonna should be sued. 29.1.24. the egos were paramount and anyone who Freddie mercury didn't like seemed to feel the icy grip of worklessness and/or pointlessness take hold of their myriad stabs at another 15mins of fame......eg: Johnny Marr's equally egotistical riffing with limited sound....or maybe he just needed some filler? I lost interest with the snuff like movietone footage as that damnable Cars song played out. That kinda caper did a great deal regards shaping and tempering my world weary view that folk have no concept of anything re: the consequence of their immediate actions...or what befalls alleged good works. as you guys, with yer own ideas on what needed to be done, had a hand in events, it would be a decent question to pose: how sickening was it, LIVE AID, in respect of egotistical concerns making a mockery of a simple enough idea to give pennies to the poor.... and everything? I always asked myself what could be so wrong with such an idea? Then you get to thinking all that money would have been collected, any old how, with jagger and co wandering about with a hat as Geldof swore at yer mam, throwing milk bottles in disdain at some perceived slight. Someone's made poorer so others can fatten themselves up. Your tit for tat scenario is allowed to play out unabashed ad nauseam....i used to own that record - several times over. as I did frog chorus. enuff said. maybe even novelty has lost it's flavour? anyhow, I could actually fill this out with coherence but...dunno... that term: victim's family makes sense when you weigh up the fact that those they alleged needed help were exploited to the umpteenth degree... anything for good copy, though, right? whether papers or televisual news feeds, the sane tired old refrain, which seeks to erode any genuine concerns, due to their allus having to be an angle in reference to the situation... or a pitch. enough of the media studies lesson, though....

Regarding songs about being in a group, several from Mott the Hoople spring to mind: All the Way From Memphis, Saturday Gigs and the less well-known Ballad of Mott. Maybe Ian Hunter has some kind of introspective streak that makes his lyrics read like a rock band's diary!

Tom Hibbert (the world’s funniest music writer) and why Madonna should be sued. 29.1.24. 2312PM. how much was a ticket to the old girl's show? for the money, and i'm guessing it's more than an extortionate 50quid on the door for a Manchester Albert Hall pop touch show by the hives, I'm thinking for those prices you want a sit down meal and a few cabaret turns to holster yer fiscal loss????

Funny thing about the Madonna suing, I went to see The Happy Mondays at The Astoria in ‘90, ‘91. The Shamen supported and went on around 8-ish and finished an hour or so later and The Happy Mondays were due on around 9.30, 10 o’clock-ish. They went on at 12.45am, I kid ye not! Everyone just coped by proceeding to drink as much as Shaun Ryder probably used for mouthwash!

I remember watching some of the original b&w King Kong films in the mid-70s. The BBC were possibly inspired to show them because of the 1976 reboot starring Jessica Lange (not in the title role I should add). As for Jaws, it was impossible for even someone like me, just starting primary school, to not be aware of, due to the massive hype (I suppose it was the first modern summer blockbuster?). I had two rubber toy sharks, one of which I still possess to this day.

Madonna is a sexless performer. When dancing, she comes across like a hyperactive gym teacher trying to enthuse a band of sulky 14 year olds.
