Tom Jones was extremely versatile and still was going right up from the 60s to the 90s etc... blues, rock, heavy metal, SOUL, Pop ballads, new wave etc.... And Unlike Presley, Jones was not hesitant to sing with the top CREAM OF THE CROP/ significant black Soul artists of the day from Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, to Aretha Franklin to Isaac Hayes and Teddy Pendergrass. And that's just scratching the surface. Presley could not do authentic Soul because he didn't have the voice, passion or range for that genre. Which is why he didn't dare make the attempt. Jones did and could. Which is why he could go toe to toe with the best of them and earn sincere praise. Presley was a fine pop singer who I felt could interpret country music particularly well but his voice was not the most wide ranging in register and accounts for why he stayed in his lane. By his own admission he stated he knew he couldn't sing like the popular black artists of his era when he started out like Little Richard, Fats Domino and others. The man was humble and honest enough to make that statement. It did not take away from his talent. It was just a very candid admission. Tom Jones on the other hand could take it to another level with ease and many a Black artist admired the man for it. Presley himself is on record extolling the virtues of Jones incredible vocal prowess. It wasn't just mere respect but he was an unabashed fanatic of Jones voice and there is nothing wrong with that. And for the record I happen to be an admirer of BOTH men for quite some time, just in case some bloke may get themselves in a state of anxiety over my comment. Cheers Mates.

I saw Tom Jones in concert about 10 years ago. He doesn't quite move like that anymore, but he still moves. And his voice is absolutely astonishing. It was an outdoor concert, really hot and humid, he didn't miss a beat. He didn't miss a note. We were on our feet the entire night AND some women still through their underwear at him, LOL. Until you see him live you forget all the hits he had. Just amazing.

Heh. Over at my house, all us kids were just little ones, but we all got to stay up "late" on Sunday nights to see Tom Jones on the telly. This is long, but I grew up with Tom Jones, and I always underestimated him. He was the child of people with money, and rumor had it that he bought his way into the business. Delilah is the song that I always associated with him (and one that that might give you a good react, Jamal). I was nostalgia listening it on KZfaq when they suggested a Tom Jones with Janis Joplin video, clearly pulled from some 70's TV show. I snickered at the thought, because I thought Janis would simply destroy him. I could not have been more wrong. I went down a Tom Jones rabbit hole that night, and left with an incredible amount of new respect for that man's raw talent.

Check out his "It's Not Unusual" and "She's a Lady". James Brown was born in 1933 and Tom Jones was born in 1940.

I love this reaction! I love that you sent it over to Leo. He could barely contain himself, much like you! I think you both restarted it several times each and the laughter has been contagious. Keep up the good work!

You should view the original of “Treat Her Right” by Roy Head. He moved like he had no backbone.

And room keys! LOL now it would be absurd because they don't have the number on them, but back in the day it was a plastic fob with the hotel name and the room number. Women would just lob them shits onto the stage at the hotel he was playing. !!

Women LOVED Tom - great performer and very nice man! Everyone predicted that he'd lose his voice because it had so much power, but it stayed intact!

I've just found your reaction. I haven't laughed so much in a long time, so thank you 😂 With those moves, it's no wonder he had both hips replaced in recent years 😂

I saw him twice back in the 90's. What a showman. I had a crush on him growing up, never missed him if possible on TV. He still sounds good.

I used to watch Tom’s show with my mom. I was a teenager and I still can’t sit still when he sings. He did a redo of a Prince song. Way out there. Amazing.

You always make my day, Jamel! I often come back and watch your reaction to "Treat Her Right." It breaks me up every time. I'd say we ALL need a little more room when it comes to Tom (we never know what he's gonna do live onstage, so we better be prepared). Anyway, I want to send you for some more Tom Jones, if you can make time for another reaction to the man. It's a very early performance by Tom... where he's singing "Whatcha Gonna Do." It was part of his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The show put him in a production number with choreographed dancers around him, but his moves are definitely his own. Love the song, the sharp suit, ducktail hair, broken nose, effortless leaps, the swag in the way he snaps his fingers and moves his body... and, of course, THE VOICE. It's 1965... and Tom had just turned 25 years old a week earlier. The lyrics pose the question, Whatcha gonna do if your baby leaves you? Well, if you turn that around, this baby would never leave Tom. Not on your life! Come on, Tom. Whatcha gonna do when your baby stays? Tell me... whatcha gonna do? Better yet... show me! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJx_mLuA3papYX0.html God bless you, Jamel... do keep keeping great music alive! And thanks for considering this fan request.

I wish Tom would do a metal song. I saw a video of him singing something really powerful and I thought, "Tom would make a really good metal singer." A week later I saw a news story where Tony Iommi said he would like to work with Tom Jones. He can belt it out like Dio in his prime.

I still remember being about 3 and Tom Jones did a Christmas special. Everyone including my mom and my aunt lined up on the couch and they shushed us about a million times before it started so that we wouldn't mess with Tom's performance. Then they sighed at him and sang every song along with him for the whole show. I think that if there had been such a thing as a free pass in those days, he would have been my mom and all of my aunts' choices. Great memories.
