AGREED. For those that disagree, you're just pissed that he wasn't coaching your team. Tom Landry was am innovator. Teams to this very day run his philosophies. You can deny him all you want, but he is, along with Lombardi, the greatest, most iconic head coach the NFL has ever known. The greatest NFL head coaches of all time go like this #1 Tom "The Man In the Hat" Landry #2 Vincenzno Lombardi #3 Bill Belichick I'm almost prompted to put Bill ahead at number 1 (and more than likely should do so, but I'm a DIE HARD Dallas Cowboys fan for life) but I just can't I FULLY respect what the Patriots have done the last 15 years or so. They are doing what is NOT supposed to be done today in modern football with free agency and the salary cap. But Bill Belichick is taking what his predecessors food before him and capatilizing on them Kinda sorta like the Japanese have done with the automobile. They're taking someone else's idea and critiquing or to perfection Hats off to the Patriots and Mr Belichick Tom Landry is "The Man" END OF DISCUSSION

30 years of coaching one team, no cheating, 2 Superbowls, multiple division titles, the respect and admiration of the NFL, Texas, and all of his ex-players. He was the personification of everything good in America. He was the definition of class and dignity all the way to the end. No question he played and coached it the right way every single day. Knowbody can take anything away from him. Besides Knoll and maybe Walsh I can can't think of anyone better.

Tom Landry was the first football coach I followed. When I heard that Bob Hayes had become a football player and then heard that the team was the new outfit, the Dallas Cowboys, I immediately became a fan. And Tom Landry, reclusive to match my personality, became my idol. I lived for those Landry cowboys, the best NFL experience I ever had.

Huh? When ESPN fires a Tennis commentator for saying "gorilla tactics" during a match with Serena Wilson, I'd say that's a hint our culture is a little too P.C. When ESPN pulls an Asian broadcaster with the last name "Lee" after the Charlottesville protest last month, simply because his name may remind people of 'Rober E Lee', I'd say that's too P.C. Where did "compassion and respect" come in in those examples, lol? Or a 1st grader in California accidentally calling a friend who "transgendered" over the summer by his male name instead of his female name and is taken to the principals office and punished, I'd say things have gone overboard. A f*cking 1st grader being punished for a pronoun, and you call that lack of respect and compassion!?

Racist? You do notice all the dudes wearing Washington REDSKINS jerseys when he says he's surrounded by Redskins, right? Now, if you want to argue that the name of the NFL team in Washington should be changed, that's another discussion, but context matters. And, in this case, Landry was talking about football players.

Mean Joe Greene was supposed to be a Cowboy. Landry told him pre-draft 69' "you're not leaving texas". How Pittsburgh knew about a player from tiny North Texas State, is beyond me. Dallas would have won 6 SB's in the 70's. Paired up at DT with Bob Lilly early in his career then with Randy White at the end.😱

Everything good said about him in comments is true. He was a fine man, but I think he was a bit overrated as coach. His achilles heel was the human element. Great brain, yes, but he lacked the fundamentals of human understanding and the fact that emotions do play a part in football. As a result, his teams sometimes lost when they should have won. This was where men like Lombardi, Noll, and Walsh outclassed, and in most big-game situations, beat him.
@Asiandiskool

I mean to be fair, he won 2 SuperBowls and should have won a 3rd one if Jackie Smith didn't drop a wide open TD. I mean there are things you just can't control like that. Or the Ice Bowl where there was actually a false start, but wasn't called that let the Packers win that game. It's things like that, where no matter how good you coach, some things are just not in his control

@SuperCapt1701 Jerry Jones handling the firing of Tom Laundry was a disgrace. Laundry took NY Giants head coach Steve Ownes umbrella defense and made the 4-3 alignment using Sam Huff as his middle linebacker as defensive cordinator with the Giants. Here it is all these years and the 4--3 is still used, with some slight modifications. I also read that Laundry studied engineering and applied engineering principles to his systems. Being a Giants fan, I never liked Dallas, but respected them because of Coach Laundry. I miss seeing innovative coaches in today's NFL.
