The pre-war music selection of Fallout highlights the ironic idealism of a simpler time levying the horrors that Tom Lehrer's genius work emboldens. This song is essentially the game in itself, so it being so on the nose probably discouraged them from using it-- I would love it if this were a title they would utilize in the credits or ending segments of one of the games, though! Edit: I have recently played New Vegas again, and the Camp Searchlight dogtag quest actually pays homage to one of his title toons! Definitely go check it out to see just what th' quest's name is!

Whenever my daughter, born 1977, feels down she plays her Lehrer CD:s, and they always make her smile or even laugh out loud. Her 12 year old son tries hard to make his friends understand what's so great with Lehrer; he himself knows most of the songs by heart. So I think Lehrer will be around for a long time yet, in person or otherwise. Did I mention I adore him myself?

This was originally written by him for NBC's "THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS" in 1964, a highly satiric prime-time weekly "revue" that poked fun at current events, for which Tom wrote several topical songs, which he later recorded in concert for Reprise records in July 1965 ["That Was the Year That Was"], after the show had gone off the air.

I love Tom lehrer! My parents raised me and my brother on his music. I love his use of language and his dry wit. Not to mention his music is catchy. One of my favorite lines o\from him: TL: Folk music is played on folk instruments, a category to which the piano does not, alas, qualify. So I`d like you to imagine, if you will, that I am playing an 88-string guitar.

I'm sure we would all be very happily watch new satire songs of his if he made some! If I am recalling correctly, one of the big reasons that he quit was that he didn't enjoy public performances. My thought is, perhaps he could start his own KZfaq channel? He can perform pseudo-live, but redo or edit takes as much as he wants until he's happy with the result, and his satire can remain as topical as desired, because there is no time wasted in waiting to have enough songs for a record!

The Cold War was truly an apocalyptic prospect; I was visiting the USS Midway and spoke with a veteran who'd been a bomber pilot. He told me his mission would have been to fly into China and drop his nuclear warhead deep inland. It didn't sound right to me, so I asked him if he was expected to make the return journey. That gentleman smiled and told me he had the same question, and when he brought it up he was told that, yes, he wouldn't have enough fuel to make it back, so he would ditch in the ocean and a submarine would pick him up. Considering the level of technology at the time and the chaos that would ensue as a result of global nuclear warfare, I think he understood very well that such a procedure was just to make him feel better about it. I mean, think about it: you're on the front line of a war that will last a few hours and leave nothing for you to come back to. Can't describe the respect I have for the troops who were willing to commit to such suicidal duty in the name of their nation, regardless of whether or not the politics behind it was right or wrong.
