This song always reminds me of a horrible time in my life, where I ended up alone and financially struggling, I almost ended up homeless too. One day after finally getting out of that hole and I moved into my own place, this song started playing on the radio. It was a new beginning for me and the start of a new life.

My best friend of 33 years (who has lived with me (platonically) for 25+ years) passed away 2 days ago (blood cancer/'Multiple Myeloma'). For the week & a half before his death, he was being kept heavily sedated (for pain) in hospice & was unable to communicate. The day before he died, I held his hand and told him I love him, and asked him to please send me a sign when he gets to Heaven & gets his wings. *ONE HOUR* _after_ his time of death, this song ('Learning To Fly') came on the radio...& the song that played _after this_ one, was "Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters. Even if it was just coincidence, these 2 songs being played *back-to-back* at the *one-hour mark* after his death, & my having asked him for a *sign when he gets his wings,* brought me comfort. ❤

The more time is pushing us further away from the 90‘s, the more golden this unique decade appears in retrospective…"Learning to fly“ by Tom Petty is a class of its own, one of those 90’s masterpieces, that reflects the zeitgeist of this era so perfect…a time, when life was much more simple and essential, when everything was coloured in purple and the grass was greener than nowadays…

This song will always remind me of the bittersweet, turning corners, and moving on. I listened to it a lot around the time that my relationship with my first love, (an 11 year relationship) was fizzling out and coming to an end. I loved her desperately, and yet i knew we were sliding further and further away from eachother. When she broke the news to me that she wanted to move on, I didn't want to let go, as I had told her I never would. What goes up, must come down, and coming down is the hardest thing.

Truly a classic. Timeless. Let your top down and blare this over your speaker this summer.
This song is very special to me. My father was a commercial airline pilot. We shared a love of flying and airplanes. On the day of my first solo flight, he came with me to see me fly for the first time. It was the only time in his 85 years he ever said he was proud of me. And he'd been waiting his whole life to say, "My son the pilot". On our way home, this song came on the radio. I miss you so much Pa.

This absolutely blew my mind. What an incredible synchronicity and beautiful moment. I have full body chills haha, all I can say is “wow” 🤯 take care my friend I hope you’re doing well ❤ Edit- Actually I thought of something to say: This anecdote perfectly exemplifies the incredible power of music. Music is the deepest and most emotional communication form available to us. This story clearly shows why it’s important that we always strive to create the best possible art and express the true depths of how we all feel, that words could never describe. Art is more real than life in some ways.

Man the layered guitars just make this so special IMO, the more percussive steel string, that crisp, bright electric clean tone, that jangly tone during the chorus, and that delicious blues fuzz for the solos. The interplay between each guitar's melodic part creates this luscious cloud of guitars sailing smoothly over that insistent, punchy drum pattern. It reminds me of some of JJ Cale's music, the way it just floats along (e.g. "Ride me High", "Travelin Light", "Friday", "Carry On").

Thinking of my Dad on the eve of what should have been his 73rd birthday. This was his favorite Tom Petty song. Not sorry I stole his greatest hits cd in high school and was able to see them live in Cincinnati in 2008. We miss you Papa Dave.

My father passed away a month ago and a year ago we saw Tom petty in concert for the final time in Cleveland. It was amazing and I hold on to that memory today. We had a private service for my father and a man sang this song for my dad acoustically and it was amazing. I remember it alway. RIP to two great men. Tom petty and my father.

This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts.

Tom Petty from five in the morning until now , I might end up listening to him the whole day. For some reason I felt like Tom- Petty today and don't believe he's dead. I got hooked with his music when I immigrated to Canada from Africa, Ethiopia long ago Thanks to Toronto's fm radio Q-107 for hook me with him and others before the internet. Today Tom is alive in my home and my heart thanks to the internet Cheers!!!

What a heartbreaking day. The tragedy in Las Vegas, and now the passing of another great. Petty already knew how to fly, and I guess it was time for him to take off. Thanks for leaving behind these gifts in your music, you live on. RIP Tom Petty

Exactly my thinking too. Tom finally learned how to fly and got his wings to carry him into the afterlife. I never met him and never had the chance to attend one of his concerts, but I felt a connection with him because his birthday and mine fall on the same day, although the years are different. RIP.
