I think you guys missed the last verse: "Free Falling" - he thought his life would be better without her - he'd have freedom from commitment / obligation - but without her - his life is actually in free fall. My own 2 cents. I'm glad you two did Tom Petty. A wonderful artist that I have grown more to like now than during his peak commercial years in the '80s. Thanks for your reactions.

This song has a double meaning guys. The one meeting might be exactly what you guys are saying but a big meaning to this particular track is obviously women coming to la and chasing their dreams. They meet guys who promised them they can put them in the movies and this and that. Coming from Southern California and the places that he's talking about, I definitely can tell he's speaking a lot about vampires sucking the energy or aspirations out of these women who are coming to hopefully get famous. This is so close to things I've seen in my life within Hollywood area. I lived in studio City which is right on Ventura boulevard. So what you guys are saying is probably right but I'm pretty sure this is certainly about nice little innocent girls or women coming to la chasing their dreams to be actresses and then there's vampires, lying men, that suck the life out of them by promising I can do this for you or I can do that for you and so on. Most definitely is metaphorical of pretty much what we see going on in Hollywood with all these things like Harvey Weinstein and aspiring actresses. I used to see this all the freaking time. I knew this one man that would literally go to the Hollywood Greyhound bus station and wait to pick up young ladies who come out chasing a dream. He'd feed him a line of BS and take advantage of them for a while and then leave them be. I'm not very old now but I was a teenager in seeing these things because I had family in the business

I liked Tom Petty in the 80s, but I get how incredible his music was now that I’m older. Sometimes you need experiences under your belt to understand.

He’s free but there’s a touch of melancholy in it. He’ll remember her, but he’s moving on into wide open spaces. It’s less about him playing her, then he’s a fringe character, she’s the good girl and they’ll never fit. She fell for him, drawn to the bad boy type, but he’s not the suburban, white picket fence guy and has to walk away.

I agree with your ideas, but I think that there is another piece to the emotional backdrop of this song -- the way he describes her love for him in the first verse: She's a good girl, loves her mama Loves Jesus and America, too She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis Loves horses and her boyfriend, too I think he feels that her love for him is superficial and not very genuine or deep. The lyric structure draws a parallel between her love for him and her love for America, something society expects her to do (love America, have a boyfriend). It implies that she loves horses more than she does him. To me, the song has an almost wistful vibe, I think it's possible that he entered into the relationship in good faith, but was disappointed by the lack of intensity, and left. So now they are both singing different flavours of the blues. I think he is happy to be free of the relationship, but sad that it was not what he was hoping for.

The lyrics deal with Los Angeles culture, mentioning actual places in the area: Reseda, Mulholland and Ventura Boulevard. It implies that the people of LA will casually use others for personal gain, as the singer has just dumped a girl and doesn't even miss her. Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida and moved to LA with The Heartbreakers in 1974. His outsider perspective came in handy in this song.

Some of his newer songs don't get enough airplay in my opinion like Saving Grace or Last time your gonna hurt me! Greatness RIP TP - I also feel sorry for the band he kept together so long. Doing those videos in his own studio/gallery of guitars you can see how much fun these guys had together and how absolutely in sync they were! So missed...

Jeff Lynne co-wrote (and produced) the song, and it was Jeff who named it. Jeff told Tom to sing, "I'm free falling!", as the chorus, but Tom couldn't do it all in one breath. So Jeff told him to split it up as: "I'm free! [breathe] Free falling!" So when analyzing the song, don't focus on the lyrical line, "I'm free!", because it was never meant to be in the lyrics as a stand-alone phrase/feeling. No, the song is primarily about his feelings of guilt, and regrets, and the accompanying feeling that he's, "free falling". Great song, one of Petty's best. But make no mistake, the song would not exist as we know it were it not for the mind of Jeff Lynne.

You should do Tom Petty's Learning to Fly next. It's the perfect road trip song... windows down, hand swaying in the wind, not a care in the world.

Holy shit! Brad really got this one. The one he should have married and now he is "free falling" through life.

I lived in the San Fernando Valley for 30 years and all the street names in the song are all real. Can't hear this without thinking about home.

One of the better bands I’ve listened to since the sixties! “You Wreck Me” and “Even the Losers” are a couple more of his best songs!

One of many beautiful latter-day Petty songs would be "Wildflowers." Definitely worth checking out.

Love the look on Brad's face when he said you can't win with women. Feel your pain. Just like when you ask them what is wrong and they say nothing.....😂

I always interpreted this song as taking a leap of faith(free falling). Breaking from your perfect conventional life with the all american girl and pursuing your dreams and a sense of adventure etc.

My first exposure to Petty back in 1987-88 I think that was. Elvis Costello, Mike and the machines, George Harrison, Steve winwood, Paul McCartney were of the same vibe.

My mom had this cassette in her car, it came out when I was about 9 or 10 years old. We played that tape front to back, both sides. My brother and I couldn't get enough.

Its kind of interesting when i first started watching them Brad didn't seem to grasp a lot of the songs very well, but as they have continued to watch he is getting better and better at it. There have been a couple of the newer reactions where it seemed like he really got it.

Jeff Lynne from ELO produced this album. If you listen closely you can hear him singing back-up vocals. Tom's Full Moon Fever album was full of great songs. And on a side note, after Tom finished recording this album, Stan Lynch quit the Heartbreakers. Reason given, is he thought Tom was going to leave the Heartbreakers all together for a solo career. True story. 😎☮️

I interpreted the doing from the perspective of someone who sees that they are no good for the person they are with. Like, "I will take you down with me," which is why he doesn't feel bad when he breaks her heart.
