I feel like we've entered a terrible period of time since about 2016 (around 5 years or so), with so many beloved musical artists passing away. David Bowie, Prince, Greg Allman, Glenn Frey, Walter Becker, Greg Lake, Keith Emerson, Ric Ocasek, Chuck Berry, Charlie Watts, and on and on. But of all those terrible losses, the one that I've had the most trouble accepting is Tom Petty's death. The passage of time has simply not yet alleviated the pain that I'm sure many others also still feel. In a way it reminds me of the passing of one of Tom's best friends 20 years ago- George Harrison.

That is a big break. Tom could have told him to get lost but instead he invited Jim in and made him feel right at home. I remember years ago someone saying that Tom Petty wasn’t worthy to be part of the Traveling Wilburys but as time goes on I believe Tom could definitely hold his own with those guys. Favorite TP song- Love is a Long Road.

@@MAGAMANPATRIOT this was all the way back when they first came out. The other guys were pretty much legends at the time and TP hadn’t been on the scene near as long. I would bet that individual has probably changed his tune on that statement today.

Tom Petty is the one celebrity whose death I refuse to acknowledge,it just hurts too bad to think about the world without Tom Petty. I have this imaginary Mt. Rushmore of "Cool" that has Tom front and center. Hard to beat tunes like "Just got Lucky", and "You don't know how it feels". Another fascinating video Otis!

Loved this. Tom Petty, photography, and skateboarding? A perfect trifecta for me. The first concert I ever went to was TP and the Heartbreakers. 1983, Cedar Rapids, Ia. Fell in love. Hard, lol. I remember him prowling around the stage and jumping on the speakers to get a look at the crowd. He was just beautiful, as were the band. Perfect show- they were at 1000% , and they knew it, not in a shitty way- in a we have worked our asses off for this and we're fing TIGHT way. Then I got to see him and Dylan in Mansfield, Ma. My cousins and I were waitressing on the Cape, and drove over. I dont remember alot of that one, I was most likely drunk. I wish I'd tried to see them in concert again. I remember Desert Storm and "Won't Back Down" becoming an anthem. I was proud and peeved at the same time. Anyway, sorry to go on. Tom Petty and the band stole my 16 year old heart. And their music has been one of the most beloved soundtracks to/of my life. One Story Town, Hometown Blues, Wasted Life, Wake Up Time, Insider, Listen to Her Heart, Honey Bee,... ...

Since the video with Jim last week, I keep seeing that picture he took of Dolly by the Caddy. I don't know why but, that portrait/picture of her says that there was more to her than I had previously thought. She's not an overly decorated country star. It shows that she has a real down to earth quality about her. Thanks Otis

What a great story Jim... Thanks for sharing!!! I 1st saw Tom Petty at the Lockn Festival in Arrington, VA in 2014. Sadly, prior to that, I had listened to others who had told me to "skip going to his concerts" as they claimed I would only be forced to listen to him playing 3 - 4 min versions of his greatest hits album. Well, he sure proved those people to be idiots for me. 🙄 Tom was definitely a highlight of the entire festival that year.🤩 He not only played incredibly, but he also did a fantastic job of interacting with the crowd by laughing, telling stories and jokes in between his songs in such a way that he made the stage feel more like he was playing in your living room than in a huge field in the mountains of Virginia.🤗 I was so sorry that I didn't see him perform more when I had the chance.🥵 As far as favorite songs, it is too hard to pick just one. However, as I have aged, and especially since his own passing, the songs "Room At The Top" and "Something Good Coming" have seemed to take on special significance and specialize for me.🥰 Thanks again for a great story about a great man giving someone their shot. 👍

A cool thing about that song - on his live anthology record that came out a while back - I think it's like 4 or 5 records worth of material - and it's absolutely awesome - but anyway, the songs are all recorded at different venues and at different times during the bands life - and the live version of that song was recorded at a place near me called Blossom Music Center - and that place has a very particular acoustic vibe to it. I've never seen a show anywhere else that sounds like that place - it has it's very own thing going on. There are bands that come around here to play, and some of them mention that - so when someone is in my car, I always pop that version in and ask, "guess where this was recorded" - and everyone knows right off the bat. That version totally captures the sound of that place so perfectly - it kinda blows my mind every time I hear it - and it's such a cool song that some people don't know about. Anyway, I saw you mentioned that song, so I had to say something about it. Haha.

Love these interview/videos! Tom & The Heartbreakers had so many great songs! One of my favorites is him & Stevie's Stop Dragin My Heart Around!! Also Runnin Down A Dream & Free Fallin! I was riding with my son one day,we were listening to a classic rock station out of Atlanta. They kept playing Tom Petty songs, one after another. I was thinking to myself, please let this be just a request by someone. When the last song was over, he started talking about Tom's passing. I couldn't believe it, I was thinking, he's my age, this can't be! RIP Tom,you & the band brought us so much great music. ❤

It's sad that Tom Petty isn't with us anymore. His music put a smile on my face when I was lost or felt alone for some reason or another. This last year with COVID taking over every moment of our lives I found myself out on some country trails running and walking to keep my stress down. I’m not sure when I loaded “Into the Great Wide Open” on my IPOD (yes, I still use mine for running) but it was there and man it was pure joy to hear again. The one song that stands out for me is “Makin Some Noise”. It’s a song I go to when I’m almost done with a 15-mile run or a 20-mile walk. It’s my go to song for inspiration.

(Whoops, almost forgot...) Fav song by Tom? Well, years ago I would have picked a cut off his LP Hard Promises, which I loved so much. It was also kind of under the radar after the massive success of Damn the Torpedoes. But when Full Moon Fever came out the summer of 1989, it blew me away. I mean, classic song after classic song! And I would have to pick the ENTIRE album, it's that amazing. But with Tom's life now sadly complete, thankfully we have all of his music to keep his spirit and talent alive and well (not to mention a "vault" of unheard gems!). Tom truly is the gift that keeps on giving. And to pick a song that seems to reflect his creative spirit, I'll choose the beautiful tune (and title track) from 1994; the gorgeous Wildflowers.

I think the song "Free Falling' is my favorite song and maybe my third favorite video and my 2nd or third favorite song and favorite video is "Don't Come Around Here No More". I would have to put the video "Last Dance With Mary Jane" as my second favorite video and my I can't decide whether I like it second or third favorite song tied with "Don't Come Around here No More". Of course that is just today, tomorrow it may be entirely different, like so many people on here stated he was one of a kind and just the kind I liked.

Being from Indiana, Last Dance with Maryjane, holds a special place in my heart because he says "Indiana" 3 times in the very beginning of the song. I’ve seen it live in Indiana, 3 times, and each time the crowd goes fucking wild and a very distinct smell would encapsulate the entire crowd and Tom would always say, "Something smells real nice out there." 💚 But having said all that, I really love the song “Room at the top” and "Swingin". Those songs really get to me.

Top 100 would be easier than just one... Three of my favs are: Room At the Top, Southern Accent, Trip To Pirate's Cove, Good Enough - well, that's already four...

A bit of a stinger at the very end but another great vid. Heheh. Too many to put my favorite from Tom Petty, of course anything that mentions smoking dope is a favorite.

It cost me $23. to send Otis $15.49 CDN. When did PayPal start charging $3/ tip? I could rant for paragraphs about that Corporation, and the people behind it, and its lack of customer service. They get away with way too much, grumble, grumble😊

Yikes! That's a pretty big chunk they're taking. I just looked and I got $15.49 USD from KLH. Was that you? All apologies and thank you!

@@otisgibbs Yeah, Otis, that’s me. It was supposed to be $20 Canadian. I bought a John Prine CD last year that was $15 US on his website. It cost me $30Canadian. Anyway, lol, enjoy your half cup of coffee.😃 Edit. Oh, it was USD? That’s a little better for you.

Perfect timing Otis! Today (Oct. 20th) is Tom Petty's 71st birthday. Well, it's Oct. 20th in Japan now. This is me on vocals and percussion in my re-dedicated to Tom recording cover of "You Wreck Me." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLCIqruetZbVqnU.html

I wish I could have seen the Traveling Wilburys Wow! I ❤️Tom Petty & Heartbreakers 😎 Last Dance with Mary Jane. RIP Tom Petty. You will never be forgotten. I saw both shows in Missouri and they were over the top. You can’t go through a grocery store they’re not playing Tom Petty you can’t turn the radio on a car that they’re not playing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers I think my favorite album was southern accents
