Tom Petty's death hit me as hard as John Lennon's. I still think about him every day. Some people say it's weird to grieve over a celebrity's death, but Tom wasn't just a celebrity. He was a poet, an artist and a deeply human and humble person. That's a rare combo.

He was all those things you mentioned above. But I would like to add that even though most of us never met him, he was a dear friend. He was always with us with the perfect song at the perfect moment. He cared about and respected those who followed his music. He had a great gift to touch our souls with his. I miss him dearly.

God I miss Tom. His whole catalog is great, but a few of his tunes are simply the soundtrack to my life. I feel like he mostly wrote songs about down-and-out characters - but those occassions when he wrote about himself, it seemed like he cracked his heart open for all of us to peer inside. This is one of those songs, and it continues to support me through times of anxiety and heartbreak. I guess they really were Heartbreakers. RIP Tom.
@dianerobinson53362 жыл бұрын
" it seemed like he cracked his heart open for all of us to peer inside"....You couldn't have worded this more perfectly. He was secure enough with himself that not only was he able, but willing to show us his vulnerable side. And when he did, you can feel how genuine and honest he was when expressing his feelings. There are some things you just can't fake.

This is so beautiful, yet so hard for me to watch. To me, it showed just how much pain he was in at that time. I know the face of pain, both physical and emotional. Yet, he played for us. He continued to give us his very heart and soul, no matter how much it cost him. How could anyone not love Tommy?

For me, the song will always be about addiction, getting lost and forgetting what's important in life. But there's a hopeful tone in that the narrator seems to be in recovery.

Chris Rodgers.....I too, was devastated by his senseless and way too soon death. I cried for months every time I played a song or was anywhere someone else played one. This song is my absolute favorite. That’s a hard decision to come to considering all his great ones. Losing this poet is absolute proof that even God makes a mistake once in a while.....trump is still around creating ugly, yet we lose Tom Petty, who only created beautiful images and was generous enough to share them with the world. We love you, Tom.

I heard an interview Mike Campbell did on a radio show where he talked about Tom after he died. He said something about how Jackson Browne "hated" him. He told them Jackson had said, "It takes me three pages to say what he can say in three words". I'm paraphrasing, but man that guy was amazing. It seems like a lot of his lyrics would become relatable in a way that even he never expected.

"Square One" Had to find some higher ground. Had some fear to get around. You can say what you don't know. Later on won't work no more. Last time through I hid my tracks. So well I could not get back. Yeah my way was hard to find. Can't sell your soul for peace of mind. [Chorus:] Square one, my slate is clear. Rest your head on me my dear. It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears. It took a long time to get back here. Tried so hard to stand alone. Struggled to see past my nose. Always had more dogs than bones. I could never wear those clothes. It's a dark victory. You won and you are so lost. Told us you were satisfied, but it never came across. I had a bad fall five years ago that required seven surgeries on one of my arms/wrists/shoulder, and one on my knee and almost 20 months of physical therapy. I have the part of the chorus "It took a world of trouble, it took a world of tears, it took a long time to get back here" tattooed on back of the shoulder I broke, with some wildflowers around one side of it. I listened to that song a thousand times during the over 2 years it took me to recover. So many tears, so much time. I'm glad I got to see his last tour, one of about 30 of his shows I saw over the years. I'm not religious, but Rest in Peace, Tom, knowing what you gave to so many of other people over the years.
