Good god, how perfect is Callow reciting Sharpe even abridged. I appreciate that it's a free listen, but I really would have liked to hear Callow do "The Ballad of Prick 'Em Dry".

I read Wilt when I found a copy of it at work. It was a recommendation for A LEVELS General Studies. (Way ahead of its time in many ways). A year or so later I had a long train journey and found Riotous Assembly at a platform book store. I laughed from London to Glasgow.

Riotous Assembly has a sequel - indecent Exposure, which is equally hilarious. T. Tom Sharpe also wrote many other books including a Set of novels whose Central character is Henry Wilt; Wilr; Wilt on High; The Wilt Alternative: Wilt in Nowhere, and Ehe Wit Inheritance. The only other Novel with a sequel was Porterhouse Blue followed very much later by Granchester Grind - and no, he didn’t write Granchester Meadows. Rupert Brook lived in a house at Granchester whilst at Cambridge University. Wilt, porterhouse Blue and Blott on The Landscape were the only Novels filmed or televised. I very much doubt that the South African novels would be allowed viewing anywhere in today’s worl, not many of his other titles. I read the first two novels by Sharpie in 1976 and have read all the others as they appeared over the tears, until 2010

Absolutely love Tom Sharpe. I remember vividly reading this when I would commute to work on the tube at 6am totally off my head on heroin. Sitting in a £500 suit among the big financial City types reading their financial papers and I would be pissing myself laughing reading this. My mate had/has English Bulldogs and the bit with it eating the LSD still just gets me. Ive not read in years but listened to the audio book of it again last week. Still fresh. Have got all his work and pass them to as many peeps as possible. amazing writer.

@@strydyrhellzrydyr1345 I guess about 1990. I was in computers working at the big banks etc. And yes been all opiat clean now for 10 years. Now I'm 64 and just got married to a gorgeous lady and my first child who is 11 months old. Lifes great - moved to Texas 3 years ago and very happy. I never had a problem as long as my Dr gave me clean heroin. I lived a normal working, family life. Just stopped because I was bored of it one Xmas morning! Appreciate the thought.👍

I'll call your commute with the suit on H and raise you cooking for 70 Korean tourists a night on varying doses of 2-cb while laughing myself silly reading the half dozen Sharpe novels some kind soul left in the staff library. I eventually went quite bonky and started insisting my staff call me by various titles like "Sir Ronald" or "Major Potts". Even on quite large doses of 2-cb one can function and communicate fairly normally despite feeling like a rocket powered automaton constructed of pipe cleaners and crushed amethyst, It ended when I decided to pour corn syrup into the generator that powered the avalanche control Canadian Armed Forces base across the highway. They had soundly crushed us at foosball and been right pricks about it, taking a stuffed beaver from our lounge as their trophy. I ate a half dozen pellets and drank vodka till my brain decided reality was for pussies and for a few hours I was a Tom Sharpe character, running across the frozen highway with a four liter jug of corn syrup and a crowbar. When reality re asserted itself the lights were out across the road and I had committed an act of sabotage against a military facility. I grabbed some random crap got into my jeep and left without a word to anyone .I parked a few miles away till I could drive straight and didn't stop for 15 hours. Find Glacier Park Lodge on Google maps if you want the setting, those books should be illegal.

Sadly didn't work when filmed for big or small screen, his final works I consider duds also but the bulk is a body so hilarious and farcical I rank it alongside Wodehouse or Douglas Adams in its ability to make me laugh out loud. Simon Callow is an actor of whos range makes him such a wonderful voice or rather voices of this piece. It is out-dated yet timeless, enjoy.

Synopsis When Lockhart Flawse is catapulted out of his upper-class and rapunzel-esque life with the curmudgeonly Flawse Senior, he must enter the world of suburbia, and marriage. Rendered an absolute twit in modern society by his medieval upbringing, Lockhart must resort to drastic tactics in his attempt to return to Flawse House. Faced with the horrors of suburbia, he must either terrorise, blackmail and potentially kill an entire street of his tenants, or attempt to find his unknown and elusive father in order to inherit the estate. However, with the belief that he was dropped into his mother's arms by a stork, killing a street of people may be the wiser option for the socially inept young man. He is also under mounting pressure, as it may all be in vain if his gold-digging mother-in-law has her way. Now the wife of Flawse Senior, she has decided that if Lockhart's wealthy grandfather can't have the decency to die on his own, she will take matters into her own hands...
