The only thing better than Tom’s skill as an interviewer was his hair. And he was a great interviewer. Notice how he didn’t jump in and interrupt Cosell, who needed absolutely no help in making a point. But he could also be accommodating to other guests who weren’t nearly as articulate. @@TomChasuk I don't know who you are but Howard is exemplary in that - just as with many extraordinary Americans, we didn't get it. To hear Howard explain, constitutionally, exactly why he responded as he did in Muhammad Ali's case, is to receive a very necessary intensive course in jurisprudence. Do we have any in sports broadcasting today with a moral and ethical north such as Howard's .. I know that I don't have a name to offer in this regard. .. which makes all the words he spoke ever so much more golden ..

I'll be the first to admit that, as a young man, I found HC unpleasant, even angering. But I now mark his passing as a signal blow to, not only sports broadcasting, but broadcasting in the general. I grew up watching and listening to HC in the 1970s. Mr. Corsell was fearless in the broadcasting both. He never sugarcoated his commentaries. If he called a coach, manager, player, commissioner, owner or even a fan a useless idiot, unless they prove him wrong, he stood by his words. There was no apology, no cancel culture. Boy, Cosell had a concept almost 50 years ago about what we now struggle with which is the almost end of free broadcast sports. You can't watch baseball without paying for a subscription service and the NFL is quickly moving into pay per view games on an increasing basis.
