This was absolutely amazing. I also have a lot of admiration for the artists that work with Waits, who often get a bit buried behind his wonderful crazy voice. I thought Teddy Edwards absolutely killed in this. I was really amazed by his playing. And Greg Cohen's bass was really intelligently played, understated, and unobtrusive. These players really boosted the act.

I have a soundboard recording -- absolutely gem quality -- of a Tom Waits concert from 1977 in Willimantic CT that was supposed to have been broadcast on the radio and never was. I copied the tape from a radio station I worked at in 1977. It is, far and away, the best concert he ever gave, and I have heard a lot of his concerts. He told little stories in between each song and each one was hysterical. I have the concert on two cassette tapes. I must upload it some day.

A few months before this performance my high school mate and I threw down the most abstract maniacal poetry we could come up with, pounded at a recoiling upright with ferocity, screeching to the limits of our falsettos, etc etc. Tom, our spirit animal, though we didn't know him at the time.

Tom channels Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Kerouac and Thomas Pynchon along with his own deep blues funk. There is sill hope for the American narrative... How he is so dark and so light at the same time still amazes and delights me. I have been a devoted fan since the late 70s and he never fails to inspire me. Thanks to him and Kathleen cuz they are are great partnership.

Waits in transition, in total command of everything he accomplished before and demonstrating hints of what was to come. Obviously his later stylistics had been brewing all along. Originally Waits was seen as a throwback, a guy just trying to resurrect dead styles, but he was an iconoclast and visionary all along, assembling a mulligan stew of various elements, continually adding new ones to taste, never the same thing all the time. Pinning Waits down to any preconceived notion is futile. This is one of the most interesting and most telling live performances of his I’ve seen.

Right? Smiling and leaving is a hipster thing to do, man. There was a time you didn't know Tom Waits, Guild. You aren't somehow "better" for being in love with Grandaddy Tom. Whenever I mention Tom, and someone says "Who's that?" Tom's face is everywhere in film. So I pull out my phone and go to Google Images. Everyone always goes "Oh, HIM! He's a musician?" Then it's just a matter of picking the song Tom used to catch you. "Blue Valentines" is the one Tom used to shoot a hole through my skull. "You smile and leave." What a hipster thing to do. Condescending jerk.
@Alfadason
@Alfadason 6 жыл бұрын
don't call him a jerk, plz. I agree with u, a 100 %. But I'm sure there was some little second u thought the same way as he did, just because u were proud of knowing "the magic, that is tom waits" while someone else didn't. don't run the risk of being a condescending jerk yourself, bro. ;-) and @ GuildF40: listen, to what they have to say! showing and sharing is better than leaving and just smiling 4 yourself! Smile together with other people to his beautiful music and the vibes he communicates. I'm sure you understood that by now, I mean, your comment is from two years ago ... Have a good one, guys!

@Alfadason, I agree, that is exactly the way I took it to mean. I've asked many (everyone) and they didn't know the name, I do know they have to know the song covered by the "Eagles" written and performed by Mr Waits.
