"Ol' 55" by Tom Waits from the album 'Closing Time'
Lyrics
Well, my time went so quickly
I went lickety-splitly out to my ol' fifty-five
As I pulled away slowly, feeling so holy
God knows I was feeling alive
Now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck
Freeway cars and trucks
Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade
Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer
Oh Lord, let me tell you that the feeling getting stronger
And it's six in the morning
Gave me no warning, I had to be on my way
Well, there's trucks all a-passing me, and the lights all a-flashin'
I'm on my way home from your place
And now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck
Freeway cars and trucks
Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade
Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer
Oh Lord, let me tell you the feeling getting stronger
And my time went so quickly
I went lickety-splitly out to my ol' fifty-five
As I pulled away slowly, feeling so holy
God knows I was feeling alive
And now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck
Freeway cars and trucks
Freeway cars and trucks
Freeway cars and trucks

Tom Waits just found me. I'm obsessed. I'm 66 and I was about to give in, what's the point of it all, but it's worth listening to Tom. What an old soul. He's surely God, when God is drunk. I wish heaven was a bar with cigarettes and drinks, and Tom at the piano.

I am touched to see people sharing their love and memories here. My wife picked this song for her walking down the isle part on the wedding and i'm really proud of her for this. It really reminds you of the tenderness and fragility of life, as well as an undertone of nostalgia. It fits a wedding perfectly. It's like at particular moments in your life, you do feel the overwhelming presence of simply something bigger than you.

The only positive I can take from the passing of Mr. Brodie Lee/John Huber is having this song introduced to me. What an amazing person. I have been a fan of wrestling since birth, and I’ve never shed so many tears for a death(or any event in pro wrestling), as I did when the Exalted One left us. This hit harder than anything in recent memory, and I believe that is because some people are so good and pure, that people who’ve never met them can just sense it. And John Huber was, without a doubt, one of those people. A real man, in every sense. And you can tell by the strength of his wife and children, in this trying time, just how powerful he was. God bless his family and friends, and one day, we will all be together again .

One objective way to prove that Tom Waits is a top-notch songwriter is to refer to the comment section on a KZfaq video of one of his songs. It's almost always filled with people either praising Tom Waits, telling a personal story about themselves, and/or being supportive of the commenter telling their story.

This one reminds me of a few very specific early morning exits back to my place. It gives that sensation of hope, riding high but calm, and being content with the rest of the world rushing around and passing me by. My friend introduced me to this song a few years ago. I had feelings for her, but she said she didn’t want a romantic relationship. Out of nowhere, she said she didn’t think our friendship was going anywhere, so she called it quits and I was too hurt and stubborn and stupid to think to fight her on it, I just let her go, but I spent two years thinking about her, wondering why she left, waiting for the right time to get an answer. Last summer I went through a rough patch, having surgery on my heart while also watching my mother slowly deteriorate from cancer. Every time I thought about my friend, I was filled with bitterness about how she wasn’t there for me in my toughest time. I came to find out she had committed suicide a month after my surgery, and I am forever filled with regret that I was not there for HER. I should have tried harder to keep her close. I miss her every day.

Michael McLoughlin I was pricing tickrts for the Eagles"Long Goodbye" tour In UBS Belmont on 9/20 I lived near there for awhile when I was 10-My brother lives in the same House now. Anyway That was '61. It got me thinking of "OL '55" . I always thought no one does Tom Waits as well as Tom Waits.

Saw some explanations of the meaning of this song today. Had a good laugh. One thing for sure, he’ll never be able to sing it this was again, his voice has becomes more seasoned with age & time.
