One thing I hate about most of the people/collectors who own original 'bursts (or any high-end vintage guitar for that matter) is, that they seem to have some sort of "righteous" attitude. Like, anyone who doesn't/can't afford one should feel "blessed" to be in their presence. Newsflash: They are MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, not MUSEUM PIECES! In fact, good ole' Tom would probably shit himself if he saw some of the things I myself have done to more than a few of them (actually PLAY them, with no reservation). But, I digress.

Dennis Thompson especially I wouldn't collect for the sake of it I'd do it.. TO PLAY THEM This junk head probably doesn't play I mean call them beautiful when you have no reason too? It's a tool, and a tool is meant to be used Oh you actually mentioned that xD

It disturbs me that these great guitars probably almost all are used to play plain and simple middle of the road blues rock.....

How can the "sound, feel and playability" of all these be "virtually the same" with all those changes and variables from guitar to guitar? Watch the Phil Harris video where he has all 3 years on a stage and is describing the differences that you can actually hear.

What I love about the Les Paul is that my LP Traditional Plus is my holy grail 59 regardless of other people think. It's a Desert Burst that installed a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquities in with one orange cap and one vintage bumblebee along with a locking set of grover tuners with kidney buttons and it is as good as guitar I can imagine. I feel about it like a rich person feels about their 59, it's my baby and the sound is as sweet as anyone could ask for. 10+ freakin pounds of it SUSTAIN!

It's heavy and it is somewhat difficult to reach the upper frets. Also, headstock snapping is common.

I agree, the sad thing is that 20yrs ago it was just a used gtr,a late 50s burst is a magical thing any of the golden era gibsons have just something that you can feel, its sad to see something that could bring music to life instead being used as 401k and rarely played, when they just beg to sing for us,Jimmy Page still plays his ,when I win the lottery Im gonna buy one play it and love it,the reissues are close and still somewhat expensive,it would be nice to have more ppl playin inspiring gtrs

Used to go in Tom's shop back in the early 80's in Springfield, MO when I was a college student. He had 15 of these back then. 15! I think it has been a good investment, eh? He will probably be buried with them if he hasn't sold them by now :-)

Yeah and I see all these ESP's, etc., with bound 'boards but it doesn't cover the fret ends; which is the whole reason I like Gibson over a lot of others (I was a kid when I first got one and didn't realize they were easier to play because the scale length is 3/4" shorter!) But the ends being bound make a HUGE difference. A Fender Player will generally be a thin-wire, unbound type player. -which works well for a 'thumb over' type player. If you keep your thumb on the back mostly (I do) Gibs work

instruments are made to be played,not as an endorsement,do you think that gibson made these les pauls so that tom wittrock and company would get rich,thinkin that he´s a les paul expert by just saying a few words,back in 1988 he used to sell these sunburst for 5000 to 10000 dollars,i´m fortuned to say that i played a 1959 sunburst 9 years ago and of course i cannot buy it cause thats crazy,but i still wake up at mornings remembering the sound,feel and the looks of that les paul that i played.

Bart Whittrock is one of the finest human beings I have had the pleasure of knowing... He hardworking and honest, with ah work ethic just like my grandparents. In 25 years of knowing the man he has never ever denied ah favor.... Parents could be so lucky to have their children grow up and become honest decent businessmen who employ hundreds of people over the years, and their family members. The music business in TEXAS is world famous because of BART and his brother Tom.

vintage prices are pretty obscene across the board but like the guy says gibsons have never been super consistant and thats what makes some very special, I played a 68 goldtop reissue that friend of mine has and was full of mojo played some from the 70s even that are great gtrs, mine is 2006 54 reissue in iceteaburst instead of goldtop, and its rigoddamndiculously cool, the closest ive played to a 50s burst was a 55 fretless wonder, had p90s init had the same tunematic as a burst,still droolin

The consistency now is nearly as good now as it was before the Norlin era, but the quality was still higher in the old days, even an original melody maker often sound better unplugged than most new guitars. Is it a better player in real life? Could be, but in general still lacking in most ways.

@murfdog19 yeah you know with the money I was makin 20 yrs ago a burst might as well have been a million dollors,and apparently its the same now might as well be a million dollars, sadly these guitars are out of reach for most of us,and probably always will be,but we can dream and we might get lucky,but for now i am very very pleased with my reissue

The one thing I have discovered is that the sound of these vary, I've heard some that scream & others that just sound like a new one off the rack of today's stores. An example of a great sounding '59 imho would be Glen Kuykendall 's 1959 burst. an example of one that sounded like any les paul of today was the 1960 that Norman's Rare gtrs had selling for 325k...last I heard..the condition was unreal, but the sound was disappointing to me..

I have a 1981 heritage series that looks every bit as good as these, like the Page lp, only nicer...paid 600 used in 82. Better pickups, graph tech saddles etc....it's my 59.

Can you imagine having all of those Bursts sitting around your house? If he were to sell all three of those guitars, he could buy a house, all new furniture, a Ferrari, and still have money for a vacation to the Bahamas.

What a waste...! All great guitars should be played by good musicians! For everybody appreciate and enjoy their beautiful sound! That's the reason why they have been made.

***** A reissue or a replica isn't good enough for you? Some of those guitars are very rare, and should be taken care of so they last as long as possible. A reissue will sound very close to the original, and a well made replica will sound almost exactly the same. Do you normally go into museums and say "Hey, those tools should be used by a professional joiner because that's what they were made for"? No, because those tools (in this case guitars) don't last forever, but they still can be studied, preserved and appreciated in a museum. If a musician doesn't take good care of the instrument and brakes it, well there goes a piece of history. And tell me, who will enjoy the instrument once it's broken?

Yes, it's enough for me. But I think the originals must be played, also. Agree that some must be placed into museums, but not all. Look, there're a lot of violinists playing stradivarius live, in orchestras, around the world.

@jurgenbono Na. Don't buy into the hype. I've been playing Gibson guitars since I was a teenager. I currently own a Les Paul Traditional Plus. Any of the Les Paul guitars will get you the sound, even a $800 Studio. The vintage craze was put on by old men on the internet. I wouldn't buy a vintage Les Paul even if I were a millionare. It just doesn't make sense to me.

in mid 70s i bought a 68 lp custom cherry burst of the wall at the local shop for $425. sold it 3 months later cause it was too hvy for $375

@murfdog19 it's just that nothing of that I like, I don't like mansions I like little cabins, I don't like Ferraris I like trucks, and I don't like the Bahamas I rather go to France or Japan...but I would give up any trip for a Les Paul anyways I don't even care about a real vintage one I just one a VOS, I don't have that much money so instead I just ordered a different guitar and an amp for right now.

you can tell this guy was a dork in high school, but now he has some toys and everyone wants to be his friend. Let's not forget, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc made those things cool, not dudes like this...
