Thank you so much, mate. I've been playing with both tools for a fair while now. I still can't decide which i like better. I can repair both in the field (tomahawk has proven easier to re-handle unless the khukuri is full tang) and both are incredibly useful. I LIKE the khukuri more. But the tomahawk is every bit as useful and generally lighter.

Good video. I like long form content so that was fine. I do think there is some room to make it a bit more concise. I think videos like this work really well but perhaps you should do them with a scenario in mind. For example, Tomahawks vs Khukuri when camping, Tomahawks vs Khukuri while hiking. It will allow you to come out with a clear winner and tidier summary.

I've been using a CS Rifleman's Hawk at the cost of being laughed at due to it's weight at 2.6 pounds, for 10 years. You may want to reprofile the edge on about any axe or hawk to get the "cut" you're after... I like the Khukuri, but the "Right" axe for the job and it's no question, the Axe is KING!

The kukri is awesome, you can de-limb stuff (decap a zombie for instance), you can chop, you can cut if well sharpened, you can do feather sticks (although potentially also with the hatchet) and you can sort of fight more with the kukri, I think. Now, you chop harder with the axe so if that's in reality all you want it for then probably get the hatchet or tomahawk, it will be a bit better for that.

I totally agree. If processing fire wood is all you are doing the axe is better. My design makes the tomahawk better for hunting as well but most axes can't do hunting tasks as well as a khukuri. Ultimately, I'll choose a khukuri over an axe if i don't know what I'll need to be doing.

I feel that the khukuri having the ability to cut lighter brush like a machete will make it more versatile for the majority around the world. That's not even including the accessories that generally come with them.

Nice video brother I get what your saying. Of course I'm a fan of both already. I personally like a kukri so I don't have to carry a camp ax. But depending on weather like winter I'll take my tomahawk. Mainly because summer you have vines and brush everywhere. I always go 3 tool roll saw, knife, hawk or kukri. I also switch between machete sometimes like the kabar cutless is my other go to. To tell the truth I could get away with a saw and knife I just use the others because I enjoy them. I'll tell you something about sharp implement fight. If you get backed into a situation you need to use a knife. Never stab you must cut to incapacitate. It's very hard to defend a stab in court you look like the bad guy. Versus I cut his arm because he had a weapon. That is a very very basic thought process you need to think about before ever using a sharp weapon.

Thank you, brother! Yes absolutely I could get by most days with just a knife and saw, my favourite combo ATM is a 10-12 inch blade khukuri and a folding saw. If the weight, balance, geometry, blade shape and heat treatment are right, i can use the khukuri for light wood processing including splitting, food processing including butchering and skinning and light brush clearing and keep the saw for big wood. My Dark Star design has fulfilled everything so far but now I'm looking at something with better steel and modern materials along the same lines. It'll be expensive, but I'm saving my money for it to be made 😁

Depending on what it's made from and how it's made makes a massive difference. I've got gransfors hunting axe (bit Forge welded to the body) and chipped it out first use. After a quick re-profile it's good as new. I've done the same with a few of my khukuri. Best part was it was on the same day on the same piece of river red gum. The tomahawk prototype is the most expensive tool i own because it's one solid piece of 5160 steel that was hand Forged here in Oz (hammer and anvil, no power hammer or press) whereas the production model I sell is one solid piece of 4140 that's been made with machinery and by hand but is far cheaper (still expensive) and funnily enough it was the 4140 hawk that didn't chip. It came down to the extra couple of degrees on the cutting edge angle that made all the difference. 4140 is also a tougher steel then 5160 but won't hold its edge for any where near as long. It's all trade offs unless you can afford the best of the best. I just learnt to carry a folding saw for the red gum, the blades are cheaper to replace and they weigh nothing. Then i use the tool to make wedges and find a check IF i need to split it. Overall in our environment, i trust the hawk more. I just find a smaller khukuri far more useful. Especially when paired with a folding saw 😁

@@sundogforgebydml1050 been reading some statements online that CPM-3V would be the ultimate steel for a tomahawk/axe/hatchet head but can’t find any anywhere, they were either discontinued or only made to order in batches? Also as you say the prices are very high!

@@impermanenthuman8427 you won't find many tomahawks in CPM3V but Dan Tope does a small kukri in that steel. It's about 1000aud posted i believe. Tomahawk and axe heads would need to be a custom job and at a custom premium no doubt.

Khukuri aren't particularly thin like a machete though. They should range from 6mm - 8mm on average at the spine near the bolster. Some will even be as thick as 10mm and I've even got one thicker than that but that's getting way to chunky and tiring to use.

As a tomahawk and khukuri user for years (my AO is North Central Alberta, Canada), I have to add my two cents. The tomahawk is not better on bigger wood, until recently most tomahawks did not have a hammer poll, if your tomahawk head is not set properly it will be loose enough to remove from the haft-none of mine can be easily removed. The tomahawk is easier to maintain than a khukuri. The khukuri is usually handier to use because of how you carry both. Both are about the same for fine, detail work. Neither is a 2lb axe and the axe outperforms them hands down for everything, however the axe isn't as handy to carry. The way I choose between the two is simply whichever I wish to carry at the time and in late fall, winter and early spring I take an axe. Edit: for either one, even an axe I carry a saw. Fewer calories burned and much more efficient. Second Edit: your Voidwalker is probably one of your neatest designs, but it isn't on the site right now. The Darkstar is a temptation as well. Decision decision....

Thank you so much for the insight 😊. I agree that a saw is an amazing piece of kit that should always be in your bag as it weighs nothing compared to something like an axe. Void Walker is on Great Gurkha Khukuri Shop but if you can wait a few weeks the Void Walker Sirupate might be coming out and I'll have a couple in stock ready to ship. Overall a good video. You could have keept it shorter though. If you plan what you say and cut it shorter you could definetly keep it under 20min. Concerning the Khukuri vs. Tomahawk I think that the biggest differenz between the two is that the Tomahawk can't be used very efficiently one-handed. Ive collected some experience myself and it is much harder to hit hard and accuratly with a Tomahawk when used in one Hand. The Khukuri is much easier and safer to use with one Hand. Therefore the Tomahawk/Axe is very powerfull and efficient when used with both hands. And because of that the Khukuri is better (in my Option) to process dead Wood, and the Tomahawk/Axe is better in felling standing trees. That is simply because you need your 2nd hand to hold your wood in place when processing it. When you fell a standing tree, there is No need to hold it in place.....so you can use both hands on the Tomahawk/Axe and profit from the enormous power you get that way. Thats why I choose an Axe to fell a tree and the Khukuri for processing the tree. Concerning hunting....I disagree with you. NOT because I think that the Khukuri is better at skinning than the Tomahawk. The Tomahawk is in fact better at skinning. But because you need to be able to take down a wounded animal that charges at you because you missed your Shot and didnt Hit a vital Area. A thrust with the Khukuri is mucher better suited for that, than a Swing with the Tomahawk. However I wouldnt choose either of those for hunting. If I went on a hunt (which I dont) I take a Bowie knife (or an actual dagger) pared with a skinning knife. Anyway just some of my thoughts. Have a happy new year!

I’d take the tomahawk in most areas along with a silky or bacho folding saw further up North I’d go with my Gransfors bruks Scandinavian axe the only time I’d take a machete is for areas where u have to cut a trail and it wouldn’t be a kukri but a thinner traditional machete without a recurve

I tend to agree. I have the Gransfors hunters axe and a few silky saws. They perform super well. The tomahawk was made from a solid piece of 5160 steel so is more rust resistant then the average axe steel. It cost me a fortune as it's completely hand made here in Australia but I take it everywhere. It's lighter then my gransfors by about a pound. I also have a bolo style machete I made from 80crv2 steel that weighs next to nothing for trail clearing. I'm new to machetes, but they are surprising me with their performance, even on thicker branches.

I currently live in northern PA Appalachia.... if I was forced to choose just one, I'd take a quality made khukuri, 13" blade, 8mm spine, all day long over a tomahawk, and I own and use many tomahawks. Just saying. I can get by just fine 3 seasons with my 24" Tramontina machete. Axes are great but way overrated for what most folks actually do outdoors today anyway. I'd rather a good saw. Axes are for the house. And my Tomahawks rarely see much use these days. The khukuri is superior to a tomahawk, IMO. It's design is essentially a tomahawk anyway but imagine the entire handle also having an edge. A tomahawk with a properly sharpened edge and profile, of course, will out chop a khukuri. ... but not by that much. It comes down to how much wood and how big wood you really plan on chopping up. Now drop me off middle of winter in the Canadian Boreal.... I would absolutely want my GB Scandinavian Forest axe or bigger on me, no doubt.

@sundogforgebydml1050 I do get paranoid when I don't have an axe/hawk on me lol. I absolutely love all the axes and hawks. I've been an "axe guy" ever since I was swinging them when I was a kid. So much one can do with a quality and proper built axe. But I've learned over the years, I really don't NEED an axe/hawk most of the time out there, even in winter. The older I get, especially with all my injuries, the smaller, lighter, and more minimalist I like my tools and gear. The large blade with saw combo takes care of most everything. Doesn't look as cool on the internet forums though 😁
