Hi Kim (and Camera Guy) - so excited to see you try this method! I have limited space in my backyard garden and I converted to this type of method 4-5 years ago. I am a total fan. It allows me to plant more densely and, in doing so, grow way more varieties. If I may offer a few added tips? Always try to run your string under a sunleaf branch instead of a fruit cluster. The leaf branch is stronger and will offer more support overall. Also - don't be afraid to run additional string/twine/cord from above in case the tomato plant decides to provide a double or even triple stem (not from a sucker). You might not run into this - but I grow a lot of heirlooms that seem to do this naturally. I hope you end up loving this as much as I do. Great vid - thank you!

Hi Kim. I'm trying the method you used to build a tall trellis. You need to get yourself some tomato clips though. They hold the string in place and no wrapping, much simpler and cleaner. Wishing us both luck. I have cattle panels too that I'm still going to use for my heavier toms, Dr. Wyches get huge and all my determinates. I'll wave them in the panel. I also follow a recipe from an older gentleman who grows huge award winning toms showed . 1 cup each diatomaceous earth, gypsum, fish bone meal, azamite, kelp, oyster flour and Greensand. Put compost up around plants and broadcast the rest of stuff. Of course a type of manure I use chicken and water in with a water soluble 2-2-2. Watch them go nuts!!

Oh I'm so excited that you're doing this. After researching and watching various videos like James Prigioni, I decided to do the same. I got lucky and found somebody that was giving away a bunch of bamboo . They are absolutely huge pieces. I'm sooo happy with them. Anyways I built mine the same way as you but used The bamboo and large zip ties. I have a 3x6 raised bed. I put 4 in determinate tomatoes across the back, I will be stringing those up. I also have indeterminate tomatoes positioned at the front of the bed. I also have a 4x8 raised bed. I did double rows. 5 tomatoes across the back and 4 across the front staggered. I built a double stringed trellis for that one. Also have a row of determinate tomatoes across the front. I added onions, marigolds and basil in both of them.

I wish I could make that trellis, yet It would've fit on my patio. Kim, I was told not to use a lot of fish fertilizer because it contains a lot of salt.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 2 ай бұрын
Hi Esther - it's a stunner, and you could easily customize the size for your patio. For containers, I'd recommend attaching it it to something solid, like a patio railing on either side of several containers, or a Smart Pot raised bed. Let me know if you try it! As far as fish fert goes, I've used it for years with great results. Generally, I use it at the beginning of the growing season to help the plants take off then again after a heavy pruning to encourage new growth. The brand I use is Alaksa, available at most garden centers or online. A link is in our last tomato video. Thanks for stopping by, always great to read your comments and see you on the Monday livestream!

I have used this method for about three years and have failed every year. Just for a change I am going back to the older method of using a very sturdy tomato cage and see what happens. I think the heat we have here really affects the tomato’s on the string method. We shall see based on what happens this year.

I’m debating trying this. I have 4 8’ T-posts in ground and in an row already for a “Florida Weave” set up. I put 3 tomatoes in between each set for 9 total. It wouldn’t be hard to convert it to this. I can probably fit even more this way. I’ll stick with Florida Weave this year as I don’t like heavy pruning. I’ll prune a lot to start to keep the bottom open, but then I’ll just let it go mostly. Florida Weave is constant work weaving the twine in between all the tomatoes though.

Let’s goooo!!!!! (I’ll be back after watching)❤ Perfect timing because I finished my platform today, and now I just need to add piece of wood going across the top with a support beam in the middle (8 foot wide section). Original plan was polypropylene netting because it’s easy, then changed to chicken wire because I had extra… but I keep seeing this style trellis and might change plans again 😂😂😂😂😂 Do you think this would be viable method for cucumbers and melons too? Also, James Prigioni had an interesting idea to add to this style, where he releases tension on the string when the plant gets to the top (at least that’s what I believe he said and sorry to mention another channel) So easy to get caught up in info overload 😂❤❤❤❤❤
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 2 ай бұрын
Hey McGritty! I love it when the timing works out like this! The top with support beam is a great idea too, so many ways to do this method. I considered that as well, but decided to keep it simple with my first build and then adjust if needed with the next one. Cucs and melons climb more naturally than tomatoes, their tendrils grab, but this method will work for them as well. I also saw James Prigioni's (lol, no worries) release method, but again decided against it as I wanted to use mostly re-purposed materials and spend as little as possible. Make sure to let me know how it goes and good luck! Cheers to a great tomato season!
@mcgritty8842
@mcgritty8842 2 ай бұрын
@@CaliKim29Hmm, simplicity is a beautiful thing. Maybe I’ll just do the poly netting this year because it’s probably the most simplistic for me and then I can focus my energy on other things in the garden. My chicken wire has been sitting outside and has some unpleasant spots on it, not to mention I don’t like the feel of it… And then I’ll keep this style trellis in mind if I run out of space because it’s simple to set up too ❤❤❤❤❤

@CaliKim29 I did something similar with t-posts, a metal conduit pipe for across the top, and pvc elbows to connect them. Mine isn't as tall since it was for sweet peas over spring with net, and afterwards some determinate tomatoes. I would like to try the tall version though. Looks easy, and attractive.

Hey Keith - always great to see you here! Yes, I use Epsom Salts, check out our recent pepper video for more info.
