I've grown several varieties of tomatoes this year in my organic vegetable garden. Which one of them tastes the best? I'll do a blind trial to eliminate any preconceived notions or biases with the help of my son. I'll evaluate 5 different varieties with a sixth cherry tomato thrown in for good measure. The varieties we will evaluate our, Edox F1 hybrid from Johnny Seeds, Grand Marshal F1 hybrid from Johnny Seeds, Big Beef F1 hybrid from Johnny Seeds, Granadero F1 hybrid from Johnny Seeds, Brandywine (Suddath’s strain) heirloom from Tomatofest, and Black Beauty heirloom from Baker Creek. I was surprised at the outcome and hope you will enjoy learning a bit about the tomato varieties that I have grown this spring. The harvest has been enormous, and I am very happy with the outcome, this is the part of gardening I love the most.

Unless the tomato or anything being vine ripen I can't say anything fair to judge. Also I think a judgement on tomato a few days before their peak ripen day ,As in reality we ( I know I still picking a few days early especially if I am picking for a friend to pick up and take to their home. But good thing to judge side by side test Thanks Mark as I am raising 11 different tomato just to learn a new favorite. And chopping my garden in half next season but have a few keepers and very few test veggies. Thanks for the teaching Sir

Problem is they are derived from Russian cool weather varieties. I did not get any color on them last year but just today I picked a nice scarlet one off the vine. We'll see. Letting it develop on the kitchen counter for a few days.

I don't think you let the Black Beauty ripen long enough. I don't pick them until I see red on the blossom end and they give to pressure. Even then, I'll let them sit inside a while before we eat. Delicious when fully ripe!

Great analysis. I wrote the winners down. My tomatoes refuse to turn red. Not sure what happened. Left them on the vine so long bugs started boring holes in them so I brought them inside where they still won’t turn green despite being large, etc. I’ve never seen this happen before and I am 63 years old and been gardening for years. Guess I’ll plant the summer purple hull peas now.

I have been growing Big Beef for several years and this year I am also growing Red Snapper a determinate variety. My fingers are crossed that my garden will survive the recent heavy rainfall we have had to deal with over the last 6 weeks in SE LA and my tomatoes will make it to table. My Bell Peppers and Hot peppers are doing well but my Egg Plants are struggling with the excessively wet conditions and now we are getting 90°+ temps with high humidity to throw more factors into the challenge of gardening this summer.

Yep any black, blue or purple you have to let them really ripen. but when you pick one that's just right the flavor is outstanding I grow OSU blue and the flavor is complex & smokey it's amazing. I did an experiment this year to improve a tomato's flavor. At transplant use a high potassium seaweed feed. NOT fish. then before they get ready to set blooms use a higher phosphorus then when they set their fruit hit again with the seaweed feed. It dramatically improves their flavor. always test your soil beforehand though.

What a fun comparison! I'm reminded of the roadside fruit stand tomatoes in Central CA. I'd buy a basket and eat one or two on the way home. They smelled and tasted incredible. Don't know the variety but I would call them GOATs. Growing 4 small varieties here in So AZ and they're ok except the yellow pears that are smaller than ones I've grown in the past and very tart. I'm a bit jealous of your slicers but it gets too hot, too fast here, on the surface of the sun for those. Thanks for the taste test 😄

Great tomato flavor without over whelming acid or sweet (Balanced) it was Great! Look and Flavor it was so far my best tomato. Glad you had such great tasting tomatoes. My wife and I love Cherokee Purple, an indeterminate hybrid, and Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes. But we will not have any this year since overnight, something ate all the leaves off of every plant! It appears to be the work of hornworms, but I have not seen any. At first, I thought it was, and blamed groundhogs, but again, I have no proof. Any ideas what it could be? I sprayed Sevin on the entire garden, an act I see as akin to closing the barn door after the horse is gone, and praying the plants reemerge. I cannot replace the varieties as all sources have sold out.

Hi Scott, I'm thinking you were left with more questions than answers, especially after seeing the plants, and your statement that the hybrids were for the most part healthy, and the ones that succumbed to disease were heirlooms. I liked the concept of your video: all of us who grow multiple varieties of tomatoes should try this. Do we really like the tomatoes we grow? The number of factors that go into whether we grow a particular variety are numerous, but boil down to: how succeptiple is the plant to disease, how prolific is it, and do we like the taste? Thanks so much!

So what you’re really saying is: don’t taste test your toms until they’re ripe and you’re cold-free. Got it! 😏 Thanks for doing this Scott! I always love taste test videos. Even tho we all have different palettes it does help confirm things I’m looking for in a variety. Much appreciated!

Good video Scott, hope your feeling better. An idea of taste is valuable for the future. I have been gardening for three years and I have tried different ones to find the varieties my family likes. First year it was Early Girl because thats what I found in the nursery. It was ok, and very prolific, but the skin was hard. Last year it was Beefsteak, Tommy Toe, and Rutgers. Beefsteak was a winner, and came back this year with Arkansas Traveler, and some free Ace 55 tomato seeds in a seed order. My wife loves cherry tomatoes, perhaps next year I will try edox.

Great video and I liked your tasting protocol. However, I'm surprised by one of the results, and I have a guess as to why. Your Black Beauty doesn't look nearly ripe enough. Usually they are a deep red on the inside when they ripen, and the flavor is rich. Maybe you needed to pick them before the birds got to them? I understand if that's the case. Like you said, they take forever to ripen. I'm hooked on Beauties going forward. And like you, I'm on the fence regarding Edox. I love granadero's production, though. Thanks so much for sharing the results of your tomato growing season, starting from the first purchase of seeds. I learned a ton from watching!

Do you know what fertilizer I can use to bring them to fullness inside in the future? Or, what am I doing wrong? I planted them at first using Bone and blood meal. My tomatoes are so small they’re looking like cherry tomatoes. Fort, needs, calcium, tomato tone all with no luck. Maybe too hot in sw fla?

Could be. Tomatoes stop producing when the temps are consistently in the 90s

I’ve noticed that the first few aren’t as good as they will be a week or two later. I like a bit of salt on mine...it brings out the sweetness.

Growing Cherokee Purple this year for the first time. I was hoping it was in your taste test. What do you think of them. I’m in Indiana so we would have ripe tomatoes until after July 4th, if I’m lucky!

I always enjoyed Cherokee purple, the more ripe it is, the better.

I grow Cherokee Purple and Carbon's every year, I can't decide which is better so I keep growing both, If you want a real treat, pick a large Cherokee Purple that is green and just starting to ripe, cut into large slices and grill just enough to char and soften and put on a cheese burger, hit at any cook out.

The tomatoes you don't like you should make fried green tomatoes. Now that's a way to eat lousy tomatoes. 😂

I saw a raccoon going after some of my tomatoes last night. I swear it's always something. I wonder if the flavor of any of those tomatoes would change with a good sprinkle of salt and pepper...mmm

I told you those black ones are not proper. I detest cherry tomatoes they are an insult to proper toms. Brandywine I like very fleshy not many seeds. I curry tomatoes as a spread on a steak or with bacon and eggs. For that, I use store-bought rubbish. Got an Italian tree tomato just taking off this year looking forward to the results.

The only determinate slicer variety that tasted good AT ALL was the Early Girl Bush which i've been planting every year for 7 years now. The new to me tomatoes that I enjoyed eating were Pink Tiger, Honey Drop, Paul Robeson and black brandywine. I always try to find space for Ananas Noir and Beauty King too. The flavor and performance Of Carbon is slightly better than Cherokee Purple and Black Krim. I don't have the patience for current tomatoes and I've decided to stop growing paste tomatoes in my small garden. Here is the line up of tomatoes I grew this year (2023). Early (40 to 64 days) 42 Day Tomato from MIgardener Candyland Red Currant Tomato (Early, 55 days, Indeterminate) Bush Early Girl (Early, Determinate, 54 days) Sunrise Sauce Tomato (Early, Determinate, 60 Days) Ripens all at the same time. Park Seed Season Starter Hybrid Tomato (Early, Determinate, 60 days) Black Strawberry Tomato (Early, Indeterminate, 60 days) Fruity, hint of grape & plum Honey Drop Cherry Tomato (Early, Indet, 62 days) compared to sungold, crack resistant Mid-Season (65 to 74 days) Cherry Bomb Tomato (Early, 15’ tall, 64 days to hard frost) Late Blight resistant Large Barred Boar (Early, 5’ tall, 65 days) Super Sweet 100 Hybrid VF Tomato (Early, Indeterminate, 65 days) Supremo Hybrid Tomato (Early-Mid, Determinate, 68 days) Better Boy Plus Hybrid VFNTAStTswv Tomato 20 Seeds for $3.99 from Seeds-N-Such Legend Tomato Lb (Early-Mid, Determinate, 68 days) Sungold Select II Tomato (Mid-season, Indeterminate, 68 days) Gum Drop Black F1 Hybrid Cherry Tomato (Mid, Semi-determinate, 70 days) Pink Tiger Tomato (Mid-season, Indeterminate. 70 days) Sun Gold Hybrid Tomato (Mid, Indeterminate, 70 days) Late (75 to 90 days) Thorburn's Terra-Cotta Tomato (Mid to Late, Indeterminate, 75 days) Black Sea Man Tomato (lg fruit, Determinate 4’ tall, 75 days) Black From Tula (75-85 days, Indeterminate) Beauty King (Mid-season Indeterminate, 75 days) Every tomato ripens in 2 weeks Brandy Sweet Plum Tomato (Mid-season, compact, 75 days) Orange Icicle Tomato (Mid-season, Indeterminate, 75 days) Snacking, Sauce, ketsup Barry’s Crazy Cherry Tomato (Mid-season, Indeterminate, 75 days) Evil Olive Tomato (Mid to late, Indeterminate, 75 days) good winter keeper. Galinas Cherry Tomato (Mid-season, Vigorous indeterminate, 75 days) Lg trusses Violet Jasper Tomato (Mid-season, Indeterminate, 78 days) Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomato (Late, Indeterminate, 80 days) Black Krim ( late, Indeterminate, 80 days) Aunt Ginny's Purple Tomato (Mid-season, Indeterminate, 80 days) resists cracking Oregon Star Paste Tomato (Late, determinate, 80 days) San Marzano (Late, 5 ft tall, 80 days) slow to ripen.
