In this organic gardening video, Brian from California Garden TV does a blind taste test to finally put an age old argument to bed. Is there a difference between vine-ripened tomatoes, tomatoes that finish ripening in the house, or tomatoes in the refrigerator. Does one taste better than the other? In this video, we will find out once and for all!

Curious: You're eating tomatoes and you like a tomato with less tomato flavor. So in part, for you, the taste quality of any tomato is dependent on your taste preferences. If this holds true for everyone,, others would find the other two selections best.

Guessing refrigerated is going to be a bit dull, vine ripened is going to be the best, and unripe isn’t going to be as sweet. 🤷‍♀️

Your videos are the best. I have stressed over growing tomatoes for the last 15 years. This year I have had nothing but fun with the tomatoes. I don’t know if I’ve had a better crop, but I know that I’ve a more educated crop. I owe it all to you and your way of making gardening interesting, full of knowledge and just plain fun!! Thank you for all the smiles. And... I pick almost all my tomatoes early because I’m impatient, lol.

There's actually studies that have shown that refrigeration degrades certain flavor compounds in tomatoes, so that's why it's best to keep tomatoes out of the fridge if at all possible if you're planning on using them fresh.

I get such differences even with similarly ripe tomatoes. Partially ripe tomatoes to me, have better mouth feel. They aren’t as jelly as their fully ripe counter parts. I think the ideal time to pick is justttttt when it’s about to be ripe.

three different tomatoes picked in three different occasions; heavy heat or rain can change the taste in a day, so maybe establishing a baseline and assessing the taste difference of tomatoes picked at the same time would make it more scientific

Agreed that refrigerated might come in last but sometimes can't be avoided. But they will always be better than store bought. My problem is that putting all these tomatoes in the counter has created fruit fly heaven in my kitchen. And putting them in bags to keep the fruit flies away speeds up ripening. Any suggestions for storing them until I can eat them?

I think tomatoes should never go into the fridge. But then, I do not eat them fresh that much - there is a limit to how many tomatoes one can eat, I cook them into Italian sauce. I pick them when they are still a bit green and let them ripen inside. This prevents to some extent bugs from sucking at the tomatoes. I cannot tell the difference between picked ripe and picked a little ripe and ripening inside.

Interesting. If my pests allow it, I will do the same with some of my Cherokee Purples. I have been picking them early to get some fruit before my pest gets to them. I still do not know what it is. I think it is a squirrel, but one of my neighbors saw a ferret going over my fence the other day. Other friends say it is birds. Anyway, the fruit are awesome. Thanks for all the advice.. It has given me a great garden and wonderful fruit.

I used to have terrible trouble with squirrels (I think) eating my tomatoes. After trying many things, what finally helped was to tie pantyhose around the tomatoes when they begin to ripen. How long can I have my tomatoes sitting on the counter, unrefridgerated? Sometimes a summer storm is approaching and my plants are just full of fruit and very heavy, so I pick most of the ripe fruit. In some circumstances like this I just harvest more fruits than I can eat or give away. And is leaving them on the counter for a couple of days better than putting them into the fridge? There ripe already. Right now I'm getting kind of overwhelmed with the amount of tomatoes I get, but the weather is great for the next few day, so I'm gonna sun dry many of them. Works much better than I thought, I was afraid Germany was not hot or sunny enough for such a task, but 12h of sun and 25-30+ °C is plenty right now.
