I planted a dozen Big Boy plants in my garden last year... I shared the tomatoes with my neighbors and the mail lady... Everyone said the tomatoes were extremely juicy and delicious... Great tomatoes...

Which one is best on white bread with mayo? Oh yeah, salt and pepper. Stuff of champion southern boys everywhere

That’s pretty good that you could grow Inter-determinate tomato plants in medium sized pots. I’m growing Big Beef in pots for a fall crop and keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll harvest tomatoes before it freezes.

I love "Better Boy tomatoes but the bigest problem is they are hybrids and you can't save seeds that will produce Better Boy's next year ---- when the WEF finds reasons to outlaw backyard gardens --- I'm swithing to either Box Car Willies, or Abe Lincoln, or Rutger which ever tastes the best because they are heirlooms and will grow the same ---- if the WEF tries to outlaw gardens seeds will not be easy to get. They're not destroying the food supply without reason!
@RyleesGA Жыл бұрын
It sure is a bummer that hybrid seeds can't be saved. I'm growing a fair share of heirlooms this year on top of hybrids, and I'll be reviewing Abe Lincoln this summer.
@Hutzjohn Жыл бұрын
@@RyleesGA Oh! hybrid seeds can be saved and they will grow they just will not produce the hybrid it will produce one of the parent plants.

I've grown all of the Big Boy, Better Boy, Big Beef, etc. hybrids for years and they all taste like watery bland supermarket tomatoes to me. Actually, these are probably what supermarkets are selling. Production is insane which is the only reason I've kept them in the rotation. For my zone 9b fall/winter run I'm going to switch it up and see how the Chef's Choice beefsteak hybrids do, like the black, purple, and orange hybrids.
@RyleesGA Жыл бұрын
While I may disagree with you on the flavor on the hybrids, I do think the Chef's Choice series is a good pick and I will potentially try more colors next summer.

I grew Better Boy in Edmonton, Alberta. They have a consistent round tomato shape and I use them for sandwiches, tomato soups, SALSAs ( Allrecipes Best Tomato Canning Recipe ) and pizza sauce. I used to grow Beefsteak but found they grew huge with a little more cracking at the top and sides. The main reason I switched to Better Boy was size because they are perfect for about two sandwiches. The beefsteaks I found were just too large and I wasted too much. although some of my Better Boys were well over a pound this year. Good luck everyone
@RyleesGA10 ай бұрын
Better Boys are a pretty nice size overall. My Better Boys this year were smaller, but I agree with their use for sandwiches

after years of watching my "better boy" plants die earlier in the growing season and less productive each year, i threw in a couple "big boy" plants right next to them. they did super well, didn't succumb to disease but unfortunately didn't ripen before our 1st frost. hoping there are some better choices out there, that have big boy's survivorship and better boy's ability to ripen long before the season runs out here in michigan.
@RyleesGA Жыл бұрын
Im sure there is, I'm exploring 42 varieties this year, and I think a good contender would be 4th of July or Early Girl which I'm currently growing

Well, the problem with these BIG tomatoes I had many tear themselves off my plants & I have a fulltime job so I dont have time to babysit these plants every single day. ALSO, you will find these big fruits take the longest. Big Boys take 79 days & Better Boys take 70-75 thats a long time ALSO I see it says FULL SUN not 6+ hr of sun each day so These guys are a hassle. !
@RyleesGA10 ай бұрын
Trust me, I know the hassle of a full-time job and gardening as well, I think the hardest part is the 1st stage when they are non-mature plants, but once they mature, you can give less attention
