The Kayak part used to be one of my favorite experience in the whole series. I know i sound crazy but the way the kayak is so randomly presented was an incredible surprise to me, i never expected that coming. While using the kayak the controls are clunky as hell, i know, but this gave me a sense of realistic fatigue like i was myself piloting an improvised vehicle in the middle of very strong rapids, nature is scary! They way the water current pushed you out of your route was also stunning for the time... I have a lot of memories bounded to this game and i thank you so much for the video; i really liked seeing the footages being recorded on a PS1 instead of the PC port, i think the PC version is missing a lot of artistic touches that made Tomb Raider 3 so memorable on the PS1.. keep it up!

Honestly I love the kayak scene for the reasons you described. Not only is the level very beautiful and full of marvel, but if it worked like a motorized vehicle, it would really take away from the kayaking aspect of it

I love Madubu Gorge! Is the best level of all as it has everything that makes a classic Tomb Raider : loads of traps, enemies, perfect and exciting soundtrack and a vehicle... Kayak's game play try to emulate the sensation of a real one, it would be too much easy if we just press the X. No, we have to manage in a different way, which is challenging and provokes difficult. The sensation of progress on this leves is awesome, you see different environments, lights, colors, textures... Crash site is a good one also, but mainly because of the innovative static gun at the end. I like the atmospheric also, is a mysteryous and ghosty.

Mudabu Gorge was the closest TR3 level I played that reminded me of the joy I felt playing the first 2. It's just a pleasure to play even if the kayak controls are hard to master. Just a tip though: paddle down the waterfalls backwards. You take less damage and can re-orient yourself if needed more easily.

I really hope that the developers have watched all your reviews so they catch these glitches, vehicles difficult to handle and unexplained changes (picking things up: I loved the "aha" sound and always wanted both a large icon *and* a name / description in words so I know what I've just picked up) so the remasters are a bit more uniform and more fun to play this time round!

The Nevada chapter from TR3 is one of my all time favorite video game segments. I don't think it's possible to get much better pacing, atmosphere, and cool visuals in classic TR. @@GFrom absolutely the perfect opening level! It was my first Tomb Raider level I ever played at the age of 6 and I still was able to thoroughly enjoy and complete that level in particular. I remember always thinking Lara could swing from that little 3D vine hanging from the big log with the monkey right at the start of the first big slope. I SWORE I made her do it but over time I learned it was just her grabbing the edge of the log and swaying 😂 I was deathly afraid of the tigers and piranhas, but now they're no big deal. It's a marvel how much work they put just into the amount of geometry in the Jungle level.

Oh man I didn't know you could distract the t rex with a flare! I will definitely try that next time ☺ I think the rationale for pickup icons being removed is because in the PS1 demo they had a 3D icon like TR4/5 but it would glitch through the scenery. Guess they couldn't fix it in time ☺

I used to work in a building right next to the real life abandoned Aldwych Tube Station. I did wonder what it was like down there - apparently it's lot lot more modern and with far fewer mutants :) It has also been used as a filming location many times, including V for Vendetta and the music video for Firestarter by The Prodigy. Also, the thing I like best about the jungle theme (which is brilliant - well deserved #1 on your list!) is that it reuses a melody from St Francis' Folly - it was years before I noticed, but it's there! Great retrospective, shame about the quality of the London levels, which I was so excited to play back when I first got the game.

This right here is the game that really made me a fan of the series. I didnt play 1 till after 3 and started with 2 but, like the video game Unreal, the shear size and atmosphere of this game is absolutely amazing. Even at its worst I just loved being in the environments. London may be eh but that first level where your getting to the bell really sparked a lot of my imagination as a kid with how the surroundings looked.

All you said in the intro is so true.. We saved money as kids from any possible source to buy a game.. Then that feeling of impatience to load the game, the nights we spent to finish one level, the fact that we had no internet connection and we waited a magazine to publish that game guide.. I don't now if nowadays players are able to feel all this.. About the game itself, I don't know but when I tried it for the first time as a kid I found it too confusing that I needed a guide in order to proceed the levels.. Too chaotic and open areas for my taste at time plus the fact that I couldn't save the game at any point, forced me to stop playing it (I don't remember if in the version of the game that I had the blue crystals were collectable or not..! I had the EU version and the blood colour was red) On the other hand the new mechanics, graphics and Lara's abilities was a huge step forward . TR3 is my less favourite PS1 game of the series and personally I don't think I ever stress myself to finish it. I think that Devs mixed too many elements and stories that at the end the game lost its character. Thanks again for your time, passion and the effort to upload and montage such videos ! 👍

Cool review. I always love to see more people talking about these games, even the ones I'm not as into myself. I feel kinda bad about it, and I replay it all the time to understand it better, but I absolutely just can't enjoy Tomb Raider 3. I had it as a kid, but it's the only one I didn't really delve into (other than Chronicles, which I didn't have yet). I think my reason at the time was the graphics. I didn't like the changes that were made visually, so I didn't play it. When I did play it, I was a teenager and had a lot less patience for the kind of tricks this game likes to pull than when I was a kid. Things like the monkey bars always being so hard to notice, the bosses usually being a one-hit kill, the save system, Nevada taking your weapons, so many one-chance traps everywhere. It was all so frustrating, and for the life of me, I still can't find it fun like the others. I'll admit, I understand why some people like it. It's pretty much perfect to play right after Tomb Raider 2 if instead of wanting a break you want to up the difficulty and keep going. I also get why people who played it as kids are so nostalgic for it. It probably made them way better at video games in general and beating it was probably a real event. But, sadly, for me, it just hasn't clicked. I still prefer it over AoD or the reboot games, but neither of those really feels like Tomb Raider anyway. I think the main reason this game is such a bummer for me is that I primarily just played 1 and 2 growing up and expected levels that felt like those games. This game had all new level designers who then continued on through Chronicles (and maybe AoD), so this was their first game in the series. It was also right in the middle of their yearly release schedule, which probably hurt a lot. Development of Fighting Force 2 or Ninja Shadow of Darkness might have also hindered this project depending on how many staff were on them. Maybe one day I'll be able to appreciate the actual game more, but for now, I'll just continue to wonder why they thought putting a lever that sets you on fire was a good idea. I'm not saying anyone else shouldn't enjoy this game. Actually, I wish I liked it more. It's a wonder that any game made in one year is ever enjoyable at all, especially one as long as this. There are a lot of cool things about this game. I think I just got around to it too late. I'm too critical now to really appreciate it. Updates responding to the actual video on rewatch: I actually do like Jungle as a level. I think I prefer the first level of The Last Revelation to this one, but otherwise, it's probably the most interesting of the original 5 opening levels to me nowadays.

@@Hirotoro4692 How do you know I'm wrong and you're right? In case you take the "wrong" paths in both levels, you will miss secrets at the end of the game. There are not two clear separate ways in Coastal Village. You can leave the one without extra secret in 3 possible ways, easily and obviously. In the case of River Gange it's nearly impossible to navigate from one path to the other if you don't make a particular and precise jump. Not in the case of Coastal Village. So if you miss the secret from River Gange you can make it up by finding the extra secret in Pacific, so I don't see why I am wrong and you are right just 'cause you want that.

Hello my old friend, long time no see! I just got back into Tomb raider myself for old times sake and funnily enough this review popped up in my recommended videos! It was worth the 9 year wait and I’m glad to see you’re still around and doing well! TR3 is(depending on the day as it switches with TR2 for my favorite almost everyday) my favorite Tomb Raider game. It’s the one I have most memories with and it’s also my dads favorite Tomb raider game. Whichever day it is, if I’m feeling more of an action packed game, I go with TR2, if I want a challenge with a more back to puzzles and it’s the level itself that’s challenging as opposed to the enemies themselves, I go with TR3. TR3 essentially to me is the first game on massive steroids, TR2 focused more on combat and killing human enemies and it almost feels like they watered down the puzzles and level complexity in compensation as I found the levels in TR2 are the easiest in the original trilogy to finish. I wholeheartedly agree TR3 has the worst vehicles in the series which can sometimes take me out of the game and I take a day or two away from it to recharge to be able to finish it but still love the razor edged challenge TR3 brings to the table. It certainly does not hold your hand and as you said is only for the more experienced and advanced players up to that point. Great review man!

Well, man, what a nostalgy feeling watching your review. I had the same story as yours with PS1, except it was "Duke Nukem 3D" CD, that was waiting a half of a year untill I earned enough money to buy my own PS1 along with my own TV. This gadjet costed a whole average month salary in Ukraine, about 180 usd, so there was no chance for me to ask it as a gift to my birthday from parents. Thankfully, all PS1 in Ukraine was sold mod chipped, so this allowed to play all pirate CD games for all regions, not only original black ones that costed as PS itself. I was studying on 1st year in university, and I helped my groupmates to do their course works and doing that I earned the goal ammount of money to buy that shit on summer 1998. The second game after DN3D was TR2, and after I finished it several times, the TR3 game was released. Well, I finished TR3 on PS about 10 times. You did not mention, that there was a second kayak on that level, that was another alternate path. Also, there was a method to shorten the way in Lud's Gate. I did it involuntarily for the first time. Just shoot all that mutant guys at the beginning, and you have not to go to sphynx. But tricks with standing still at T-rex and with the map of firetraps was undiscowered by me, thanks.

I was obsessed with this game for ages thanks to a big feature in one of the gaming magazines I read as a kid. But when I eventually played it, I dunno, it didn't do it for me. Probably didn't help that the way I played it was on loan from a friend who had everything unlocked, which probably took away the incentive. I saw every level but never saw ALL of the levels. Aldwych is my favorite Tomb Raider level now, i just love the aesthetics and design of the level. I always loved trains and train station levels, although i can understand people's complaints with the ticket booth part. If you pay attention to the booths though, you will notice that the booth that accepts the coin is the only one that says 1 pence on the side of it, whereas all the others say 2 pence. The only thing is figuring out that you need to use the coin there in the first place. Which isnt really that brain taxing, you'll come to that turnstyle thing later on in the level and you cant get past it, so you'd figure you'd need an item to do that. If you already have the penny, you will see that doesnt work. It shouldnt be that huge of a leap in logic to think that you might be able to buy a ticket and use that instead.

I consider TR3 my fave along with AoD and yes nostalgia plays a huge role for me too, but I think I'm more patient, which eases some things (such as mine carts) - oh and of course, I play on PC, meaning unlimited saves, limited wasps and actually being able to see without holding a flare at all times. I think that helps a lot in the enjoyment department. I agree that London is... less fun, but I relaized I actually don't mind Lud's Gate much on my latest playthrough after several years. The underwater section is fairly easy if you check all the openings first so you know exactly where to swim next time you pull a lever and also instead of the UPV, just swim by yourself, you won't get stuck in corners and actually end up doing it faster. Alwdych is an awesome location but yesss so easy to lose your way. And so hard to find it again when the level is so sprawling. But yeah I agree with lots of the points you made, and it was definitely fun to listen to. By the way, the dead bodies in the water in All Hallows - those are Sophia's experiments... I grew up with this on the PlayStation and am now playing it for the first time on PC. TR3 was my second least favorite of the series for the past 20 some odd years. Now that I can see the levels, have better problem solving skills, and can save whenever it is one of my favorites. PC really gave me a new appreciation for this game and I can't wait to play the gold levels for the first time.

Just a tip for the Kayak and lessening damage: it's much easier to paddle down the waterfalls backwards or turn the kayak around and paddle forwards a bit to slow momentum. For the big hole at the end, I tend to have Lara paddle backwards and around the hole at an angle. It's slower but she won't fall and take as much damage that way. Personally, this is one of my favourite levels in the game despite the kayak controls being hard to master. Edit: I just want to mention that your hatred of Lud's Gate's second half is essentially how I feel about Lost City of Tinnos. That level fills me with blind rage that I never even knew I had. My least favourite level in all of TR.

All through my childhood I played Nevada first because I was worried I'd be left helpless with no ammo any other way, but I recently played the game out of curiosity doing Nevada last and you get more than enough ammo regardless to get to the end. In fact if you play Nevada first it breaks the game a bit because you're literally invincible with all your ammo 😅

@@AdamDawson3 What makes you say that is the correct way to play? True it's probably the best way to play from a natural difficulty progression. But in my opinion, the "correct" way from a logical/storyline perspective would be India, London, South Pacific, Nevada, Antarctica. Why? Well after meeting Willard, Lara would want to go home and prepare for her extended adventure. While she's there, she may as well drop by to see Sofia. Nevada has to be last because by the end of it, Lara has committed so many felonies, messed around with satellites, seen the alien corpses and spacecraft, stolen classified material from the US military, and launched an unauthorised rocket into space just to open a door. It's lucky she didn't accidentally start WW3. She'd be the most wanted terrorist on the planet, with nowhere to go except hide in Antarctica. 😆 Or maybe Nevada should be first, as that would explain why Sofia set out bounty hunters to catch Lara. The US government had already put out a huge reward for Lara, dead or alive? Or maybe South Pacific should be last because that's when she really gets a glimpse of how powerful the artifacts are, and it seems irresponsible for her to keep collecting them after South Pacific, where she's seen living dinosaurs and cannibal lizard gods that can shoot electricity. 😆

Nice review. I remember playing this with my brother back in the days. We actually loved the minecart in Antarctica. It was so much fun trying to make it go as fast as possible without crashing. And even the crashing was fun... it looked so goofy. I also remember actually liking the Kayak... sure the controls are not fluent but I always thought that was supposed to be the challenge there. It kinda controls like a real life Kayak. And the sense of adventure going down all those waterfalls felt kinda cool. ... But we all can agree that London just sucks. In my adult years, I even learned to love the underwater levels of TR2. But the London levels... no way. Whenever I feel the urge to re-visit this game again, I always have second thought when I remember that these levels are in the game.

Depends on your definition of "tomb". Area 51 and the ufo have become tombs for the aliens. Many of Sophia Leigh's former experiments found a watery grave at Lud's Gate. And the antarctic caverns become tombs for the zombiefied RX Tech employees.
@VitZ9
@VitZ9 Жыл бұрын
The lack of tombs never bothered me to be honest. To me it was just a name, it doesn't have to be taken literally. This isn't direct at you btw, but while we're on the topic, it always bothered me when people criticised the games for not having tombs. It's not literally just about raiding tombs. It is, and always was designed to be, an adventure game. Lara travelled to different places in the world in search of ancient artifacts. Whether that took Lara Croft to _literal_ tombs or not is irrelevant. Defining it solely by it's tomb content is over simplifying what elements make up the game. And if TR had stayed in only tombs, people would complain it was repetitive and she should go outside. If it was called Relic Raider or Artifact Raider, people would complain she had to solve puzzles in a tomb. If it was called Puzzle Raider, people would complain about combat. Gamers are just fickle and complain about everything. Case in point, nobody complains about the zombies not technically living in residential areas in Resident Evil.

i played the first 2 TR games a lot back when they came out, the first one especially is magic for me as it looked mind blowing when it came out and was so immersive, the second one was a great effort and a worthy sequel but i didnt play it as much as the original and it didnt have the same wow factor, however i played through both of them without ever having to use a cheat code or walk through, that wasnt the case though with TR 3, what a nightmare, i would never have finished that game without walkthroughs and cheats from gaming mags at the time, i also chose the wrong way to progress through the game and constantly ran out of ammo and save crystals, i only played through it once and never went back to it again, to this day having played every TR game nothing came close to the original 1996 version.

I'm the same way. Loved the first one and played it multiple times. Played the second one a couples of times. Played the third one on auto-pilot and I don't remember much at all except the horrible London level, the Area 51 level, and one nearly impossible secret to get in the Antarctic level that you had to do the twisty backflip thing to get. I was on auto-pilot so much that I forgot about the dinosaurs and the wasps. This review brought back memories I tried to bury. Definitely my least favorite of the first 5 games. TR4 is my favorite, even though some don't like it. I just love that the whole game takes place in Egypt.

TR3 was my 1st TR game ever. i remember seeing the main screen, where Lara is standing with one pistol in her hand and hehind her there is the meteor falling. the 1st level made me love the game and love video games in general. that's why i still, until this day, have a weakness for jungle biome. later I had a similar story like yours. I couldn't play the game regularly. my dad had the PC. so I went to his house only on vacation. and he has TR2 on his PC. so I stopped playing TR3, and I started playing TR2. so technically, TR3 was my first. but TR2 is the game that I played the most. so I love these two games dearly

Tomb Raider 3, definitely, is The Game of my Child/Teenagehood. I love Tomb Raider 4, is technically and artistically very superior to all the classic games, but TR3 I played exhaustively, for hours and hours no end... much more than TR 1 and 2. Almost everything works perfectly on this: soundtrack, textures, lights (ok, forget London). India is an awesome first world, with a stunning first level. I can't count how many time I got scared with Temple Ruins, with so many traps, an explosive soundtrack and always dark...you get surprised everytime! Ganges River is more relaxing and chilling and in the next one we have the classic trap of a hole filled with cobras... India is an amazing world, very difficult for me the first times I've played. I loved Nevada and South Pacific Islands, both are very opened worlds, with light, sun, beautiful landscapes and a good sensation of progression as you face different places, is not boring like TR1 or 2. However, London is such the worst world. For sake, always dark, loads of jumps and jumps. Aldwich you run around and around with no idea what you have to do, you easily get stuck, that's why for me only The City is the good level in London, as you only have to run from Sophia and kill her at the top of the building. Antarctica is amazing and the 4 levels approach are quite different: the 1st, Antarctica, it reminds TR2, where you stay most of the time killing men and looking for keys. Next level presents the mining car, which is a different experience of driving, and the soundtrack is perfect, very connected to the action. Also, the atmospheric is quite scary and surreal. Lost City of Tinnos is surely the most classic of all the levels on TR3, with 4 different challenges we need to overcome in order to get the keys. Also, the enemies are fantastic creatures, with coloured spells, and there's the traditional run from the falling apart scenarium, reminds TR1. And last, Meteorite Cavern presents a VERY GOOD BOSS, with a real difficult level never founded on a boss of a TR game ever again. Every movement has to be perfect, everything has a timing you need to follow, otherwise you get lost on a matter of seconds. The only gap on this level is the total absence of soundtrack... is frustrating you fighting against the last and main boss of the game with no soundtrack at all. But anyway, TR3 is my favorite playstation one game and I really hope they release a new version of this one in a modern Playstation.

51:23 I remember this as everything wrong with PS1 cutscenes, from bobbing heads to simulate talking, through brick hands doing gestures that assume fingers, to spoon clipping through everything, low-poly octagon of a plate and rock solid borsch... but the bread was always the thing that got me! TR1-2 cutscenes looked better because they were minimalist and 4-5 had more or less decent animation, but this third game had this jank and looked bad even then! :3 I wonder if we can get a remaster of visuals for this game that at least stops them nodding all the time.

@@GFrom No problem c: . Another thing I was going to say was regarding the crosses on the Medipacks. Basically, there's this weird misconception that the American Red Cross sues people to "protect their IP." In actual fact, the Red Cross symbol is nobody's IP; it is an internationally protected symbol whose unauthorised use is prohibited. Any legal action that the ARC or other Red Cross organisations take against people using the symbol without authorisation is purely part of their responsibility as a Red Cross organisation under international law. Yes, Lud's gate is one of those levels that you understand that you will only play once because you just don't want to use the codes and then you will pretend that .... It never existed; pathos is fine but here we are faced with pure anguish, as in Tinnos in the part of ... Guess what ??? Section dedicated to water. I agree with the concept of "so good, so bad".

The T-Rex drowned in the water . . . This is no joke. Non-Water enemies that get into deep water die instantly (Like the monkeys in temple ruins) And the puddle of water has actually a section . . . "deep enough" for the T-Rex to die.

It's so funny watching this as most of your opinions are something straight out of my mouth😁 Also, I TOTALLY feel you on that underwater part of Lud's Gate, man it's just not fun at all! Not in any way, shape or form 😆 One of the most tedious episodes in the classic TRs, no question about it. There are several meh or straight up frustrating parts in this game I have to say, I feel like TR1 for example is a much more solid experience, and more easily enjoyable.

Heh. Actually Aldwych & Luds Gate are my favourite levels, along with the USA levels. The cut-scenes are amazing throughout, but especially in the London story. The music is amazing - "The puzzle element", "Geordie Bob", "Tony the loon"

I was excited back in the days when TR3 came out ! TR1 and 2 were really huge for me, because of the 3D and how Lara Croft is badass. So getting TR3 was something I was hyped for. When it came out, my parents couldn't afford it to me, but my grand-parents came home and gave some money to my brother and I : he got Crash Bandicoot 3, I got TR3. I was pumped a lot, and then came the troubles. TR3 is really hard. Replaying it some years after couldn't make everything easier : the game is harsh, brutal. But, still, Nevada and Pacific are excellent, top notch Tomb Raider. But, dammit, London is the definition of pain. Antarctica is exhausting, because of all London drove me nut. I had some great times with TR3, but it's that kind of game I was happy to complete, because I will never play again those sadistic levels. The best and the worst, that resumes the whole experience perfectly !
