Hello to my small group of followers. I apologize for not being on here more and answering questions in a more timely manner. I work constantly at a regular job and run the family Cemetery & Heritage Foundation that takes care of 3 old private family cemeteries here in Alexander County, North Carolina and we also work on monuments in many church cemeteries in our area because our ancestors are buried in most of them in 4 different surrounding Counties here in Western North Carolina Foothills & Mountains. I have some other video and photos that I will be posting soon to share with everyone. I am a member of the Sons of the American Revolution here as well and we do lots of "Grave Marking" commemorations throughout our area and I will be sharing some of those marker preparations with you and show before and after photos on some of the 2 century old markers we work on. More coming soon and thanks for your patience!

Hi, I didn't catch the product you are using to spray on the marker to start the cleaning process...my husband and I also, go to our ancestors resting places to clean grave and markers. We found a PRODUCT called "WET IT AND FORGET IT" , we found all you need to do is spray on stone leave for few days and when you return the stone is BEAUTIFUL and absolutely clean, without scraping, scrubbing, and rinsing off. We cleaned the first stone 4 years ago and they all are still clean today. This product is safe to animals and the environment.

The product he is using is D-2. Safe for the environment. Gentle on the stones. You wet the stone first with water. THEN spray on the D-2. Let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes. Then using a medium soft brush, start scrubbing. Then, rinse with water. Spray again with D-2 and leave it. Over time it will be Snow White.

D2 biological solution is the product

Wet and Forget is supposed to have no bleach or ammonia, but reviews by users say it smells like bleach. Use D2 only. It's not that much more expensive and that's what they use at Arlington.

Here's a CAUTION!!! NEVER use any acid or ammonia solutions to clean older markers made of marble or soapstone. This will do damage to the marker(s) and the solution gets into the pores of the stone and is activated each time it rains and will continue to break down the bonding elements of the stone itself and over time will continue to cause damage and degradation of the inscription on the marker. The more modern markers are mostly made of hard granite and are not harmed like the older more porous stone. Some newer markers are still made of marble so be sure of the type of stone the marker is made of BEFORE you start any cleaning process. D2 Cleaner does activate each time it rains BUT is NOT harmful to the structure of the stone. It takes longer to clean a marker with D2 but it is not harmful to stone, people, grass, plants or pets and other animals. Its cleaning process continues each time it gets wet and after initial cleaning I use it twice a year with just a spray over and let nature take its course to continue to keep then marker(s) clean. Follow the directions. You'll be wasting it if you apply it during clod weather. Temperatures need to be 65 degrees or higher for it to work its magic.

good job iv done janitor work for 30 years and you know what you are doing i seen people use d2 and not let the d2 work for im they set there spray is on than not even 2 min letter they set there and scrub . that what i always did as a janitor i let the chemical do the work the same when i strip floors . there a reason the info tells you to let it set 10 to 15 they study it out.

Thank you for this comment. That is a lot of good advise. The "spray and forget" method worries me because of the discoloration from it activating. But I just need to let nature do it's thing!

You should go to a landscape place and buy half a pickup load of dirt and add it around the bottom of those headstones. Smooth it all up with a garden rake.
@cemeteryfoundation41965 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. The dirt was removed from around this marker in order to get down to the support stones and remove them and then reset the marker upright and then the dirt was replaced and yes, smoothed out. I've been doing this for over 50 years, as time has allowed, in just our old Private Family burial plots here in North Carolina. 200+ year old markers were set much differently back then than they are now-a-days.

I hope you are still around and can answer this. Where is this? You mentioned this was also a Thompson Cemetery. My mom's maiden name is Thompson. She is buried in California, where I am at. Her father and grandfather are buried in Ada, Missouri. I believe her grandfather, my great grandfather, a Thompson, came from Illinois.

Statesville? Are you located in NC? I’ve been taking some pics for Find A Grave and found your video while trying to learn to clean the markers. I don’t think I can get D2 from a store anywhere around here?

Hi. Not in Statesville in this video but in neighboring Alexander County. Hiddenite to be specific. This is one of our old private family that our Foundation is maintaining.

Carol, Just do an Internet search for D2 and you will find suppliers. I purchase our supply from Cemetery Preservation Supply, LLC in Texas. Here's the link to their website: www.gravestonecleaner.com/product-tag/d2-cleaner/
