Awesome video and great overview! A note for 4:30 - we've recently made huge improvements to Mic Arm LP's cable channel magnets so they don't pop out like that anymore as well as a few other technical improvements based on community feedback.

A note about the ball mount is that it fits _any_ of the Elgato flex arm stuff so you could, theoretically, fit the threaded mount onto a flex arm and then fit that flex arm onto the mic arm. Boom, you've got a mic arm extender.

That "bar thingy" is called a riser Tom, been used in broadcast radio for decades. Nice to see these companies finally trying to make their use more mainstream. I never use mic arms without one. Auray is the "go to" company for the better risers. Their 14" riser is a mainstay in my studio. Every arm here has one. Elgato gets it right again and yes, damn near perfect!

The ball-joint is a great idea, and really should be universal on boom arms. It's just as important to be able to "aim" an end-address mic like the SM7B or an ElectroVoice RE320 or RE20, as it is for a side-address like the NT1 or your Lewitt mic. Your video inspired me to replace one of my boom arms -- thanks!

After watching your video and replacing one of my 3 boom arms with this Elgato product, I loved it so much that I replaced a second one with it. (And as my old PSA1 gets creakier, no doubt I will get a 3rd Elgato.) My favorite feature is how it's designed to hold the mic at the same angle when you raise and lower the arm. Thanks again for this video!

The Tonor T30 has almost every feature you liked about the Rode arms... - Beefy clamp with rubber on the top clamping surface. The bottom is metal, but I have put in a piece of thin cardboard so I could clamp it down without scratching the underside of my desk. - 18.5 in reach on each segment of the arm which gets the mic up and/or out further. I have no problem standing. - All metal construction feels fairly beefy and not plastic and cheap. - Cable management isn't terrible. There's no dedicated channel, but they include 4 cable ties so you can run the XLR cable all the way along the spine. - Threads on the end are standard, so you can use your own mounts; I am using a Zoom ZDM-1 on this arm. - The angle of the mic mount doesn't change as you raise or lower the mic. - The lower segment uses a 3-strut design to make it more sturdy. - The end of the arm also has both lateral and vertical rotation using a single knob, so you can get any required rotation with just two hands. - The kit comes with a pop filter and a 3/8 to 5/8 thread adapter, as well as a standard mic clip for something like an SM-58, if you already have a mic with that form factor. - MSRP is $45

The internal spring on my Blue Compass boom broke last week and I was suddenly in the market for a new boom. Prime Day on Amazon had the Elgato Wave with a 30% discount, so I bought one after watching your review. It arrived today just in time for an evening teleconference and I'm very happy. The movement is much improved over the Blue Compass. I agree with your comments - this is a great boom! If some of the plastic parts were metal this would be perfect!

Anyway, I'm glad I found this video - I'd watched your PSA1+ and was sold ... except for the branding. (Rode is really going way too far with it, even on their wireless go units. Latest version looks ridiculous on someone's shirt!) Anyway, this was the exact video I needed to make sure I'd be happier with the Elgato one for my large condenser mic. Boom arm gonna save me some floor space and I'll feel less anxious about accidentally toppling my "floor" stand with the mic on it!

That's a good point about adding in the AT 8459 to the Rode. Audiotechnica Canada have a predatory pricing policy (that little clamp is almost a hundred bucks). For decades B&H and others have been prohibited from selling to Canadians by the manufacturer. They think it's important to support the middleman.

Looks great - shame that it can only cope with 1kg max. The Rode NT1A with the supplied shockmount/popshield is just over that. A longer height extension pole would also be great for getting over the top of larger modern monitors. I run a pair of 4K 32 inch screens and there are very few desk clamp type boom arms that will get over the top and still allow good adjustment. I'm getting close to giving up looking and screwing something into my ceiling!

Here’s the AT adapter: geni.us/EVwpUG1 And man, I would LOVE to be able to do a cusTOM boom arm, but it’s tough to know where to begin. I think someone like Peter McKinnon has significantly more pull, whereas at my level it’s mostly companies just wanting to swap someone’s name on an existing version of something (or manufacture it absolutely as cheaply as possible). I followed the whole process of the guys who made the SwitchPod, and it’s so awesome, but now what an insane amount of work! So yeah, maybe one day 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am a big fan of the Blue Compass Arm. I maybe got a good version of it because i haven't had any issues of weak or too strong tension and the cable management is amazing. I did score a PSA1+ last Christmas for a great deal but I haven't needed to take it out of the box....yet. The super tall look of the extender is....a bit messy IMO but you do you. I might actually take a look at BEACN's low profile arm coming out soon since the wire management for the LP arm is rather finicky and I rather have a set it and forget it setup.

I have the Elgato Wave LP and overall, it's a good mic arm. I can't say great, but good - certainly. I prefer the low profile rather than the tall boom, which is why I went with the LP - BUT, the annoyances you mentioned - like the magnetic cable covers pop off a bit too easily when trying to adjust the cable. I suspect that if they went with stronger magnets that would alleviate the problem. Ditto on your note about the mic mount just coming loose and the mic flopping. Annoying. However, the big issue for me is the LP's inability to hold the ElectroVoice RE20 in any position. We're talking about a mic that weighs less than two pounds on an arm that's supposedly rated for 4.4 pounds and the arm continuously droops. Infuriating. Now, I have been able to tighten the arm nut enough so that the LP holds the RE20 in one position without drooping. But any movement up or down from that one spot and it collapses. There's a wing nut used to tighten the joint but it's too small to get enough leverage without using a dish towel for a little reinforcement - and I'm very reluctant to put a tool on it. And multiple emails with Elgato customer service were no help. Evidently, the description of "the mic droops and I can't get enough torque to hold it in place" seems impossible for anyone there to understand, and my suggestion of updating the wingnut with wings that are longer and give more torque (a la the arm desk mount) fails to resonate. But at the end of the day, we are talking about cheap mic arms in the sub-$100 category, and not something in the O.C. White category of broadcast arms, so I guess there are bound to be some compromises - but at least be able to hold and maneuver a sub-2 pound mic! Of course, the Allen Williams custom XLR cable works brilliantly!

Allen's cables are incredible! I've definitely found the regular arm to be more sturdy than the LP, which is weird because on paper there shouldn't be much of a difference. I will say though, both Heather and I have LP arms that we ordered right when they were released, and I think they've made several changes since then, which I've heard have made it less sturdy.

I use the elgato boom arm and it's no joke my favorite. My only complaint is the clamp if the handle was just a little shorter with a little larger thumb pad on the lever, but still had the ratchet, and maybe a simple clip for the cord when using the extension it would be perfect. Granted when I compare to all the others, I end up appreciating it even more, not sure what I love more my boom arm, or my stream deck( speaking of the deck my only complaint is no replaceable usb cable). I should stop before I sound more like an elgato fanboy. Wait did I mention how much I like the 4k60 pro capture card? :P

I don’t get why everyone is even using boom arms. They take up a huge amount of the shot. A sideways live vocal mic stand (floor standing) is a much better’ more discrete option, placing the mic below your face. Just my opinion.

I enjoy watching them and have already learned a lot from you. There are some products, hardware, and software that, I feel, are not particularly well known in the US. There is a microphone arm that I recently bought and that I am happy with. I mean the “Gravity MS TBA 01” from Germany. Maybe it will solve one or two of your problems. a little off topic here but do you mind explaining the difference in use cases between the rodecaster pro 2 vs the zoom f6 and would they both benefit from a preamp such as the Cloudlifter CL-1 or CL-2? I'm curious to know the pros and cons with everything I mentioned for livestreaming podcasts or just to record in general before uploading. Also, I'm on the fence between getting the Shure SM7B or the Rode NT1 5th generation that has 32 bit float. Would it matter if any other mic was interfacing with the zoom f6? For dynamic range purposes? Love the content you make here. It's been both entertaining and informative.
@tombuck
@tombuck 10 ай бұрын
They're similar in a lot of ways: both can record high quality and have enough gain where you shouldn't need any boosters or Cloudlifters and both can be used as audio interfaces for streaming. The RCP has the benefit of more channels and physical faders along with a ton of on board EQ options (so it's better for streaming...and the RC Duo is a great choice too!). When it comes to the Shure vs. Rode mic, it's really just personal preference. If you're running the Rode as an XLR, then you won't have the benefit of 32 bit float, so it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the kind words!

I've thought about the PSA1+, but I'm going to get the el gato and I'll tell you why. The mount where I attach the mic on every boom arm becomes loose, and then doesn't like to hold it up. With the design if it happens, I would just get a new ball mount. Plus it's on sale for $80! Also, I also have that audio technica adapter and I love it.

Ok, question. That elgato mic arm has a big retaining ring that rubs up on the xlr cable end when it’s plugged into the SM7b. How can you get around this without getting an extension?
@tombuck
@tombuck 10 ай бұрын
From what I’ve noticed, the cable’s connector kind of pushes against the ring but doesn’t seem to be negatively affected by it. I guess time will tell, it another option would be to find a smaller ring (or even just a nut or something) to give a bit more breathing room.

If it's a USB mic it can connect directly to the computer, and if it's an XLR mic it will need to run through an XLR interface or mixer, which then connect to the computer. Most USB mics come with USB cables, but XLR mics usually don't, so you'd need to get an XLR cable separately.

@tombuck

Any of those arms can support the NT USB+, so it's just personal preference. The low vs. high option should be a pretty simple one to figure out based on your needs/setup, but choosing between the taller arms is a little trickier. You really can't go wrong either way, but I might lean towards the Elgato with a bigger mic like that since it does have the added height.
