It looks like Elgato has made a few changes to this arm, including using much stronger magnets for the cable covers! I have a video that shows all the updates here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7V1oMt4qtupcnU.htmlsi=qVeJ64Bc6KlLGRNt

Awesome product! Just fix the magnetic cable covers in next versions i.e. using the more sturdy rubber ones (like the normal wave arm) and include some bands so we don't have to use ugly zip ties. =) Pity as I can see this will loose some serious buyers who plan to use XLR mics.

Hi, is the wave LP compatible with the RODE Podcaster End-address broadcaster dynamic USB mic? If not, can you recommend a good adapter? Also, would the arm+mic+adapter work as intended, or should I just look for another arm?

Just got this mic arm a couple weeks ago. Absolutely love it. Works well in a small space where I've had trouble with the more traditional "scissor" style arms in the past. Had no idea this arm existed before watching this video, actually, and glad I do now.

For the cables and magnetic covers, use some thin velcro tape, it's gonna hold everything in place. 2 for each plate and one that maintain the cable on the middle joint.

Another method, even more discreet and effective in my opinion, is to insert two small rectangular pieces of foam (the one found in some hardware box as protective material, for example) directly inside the two spaces dedicated to the cable passage inside the arm itselft, once the cables are in place, just on top of your XLR/ USB or whatever cables you want. This has two effects: holding the cables in place and preventing it from moving and lifting the metal cover plates, and, more importantly in my opinion, greatly reducing the arm's metal reasoning noises, by absorbing a good part of the arm's internal vibrations. Cutting two rectangles about 6x15 cm (depending on the density of the foam you will use) and inserting them into the arm's two cable passages makes a major difference in my opinion. Simple, invisible and super effective :)

Your reviews are so awesome, you leave no stone unturned and it's those little nuances that you point out that are the make/break difference between various arms. I tried the Blue arm despite your warnings and MAN was it annoying that I couldn't just place the mic where I wanted (no matter how I adjusted it). Returned it immediately. Will always heed your advice from now on! :)

Great review Tom. I ordered mine about 6 weeks ago but they’re not in stock in Australia until October. BTW, the ‘weird’ flange-type fitting on the end, that the ball head attaches to, is designed to take the Elgato Flex Arm attachments that work with the Elgato Multi Mount, Endless possibilities for mic and camera mounting and extending the length/angles of the LP arm. .

Hey Tom I've used a PSA1 for a couple years and I thought I'd just point out that I was also frustrated with not being able to turn the "mounting pin" all the way vertical. What I discovered you can do is remove the mic, unscrew the oval tabs completely and then you can slide the mounting pin out and put it in the opposite way. Did this pretty much as soon as I got it and it's been pretty much a perfect arm for me with this little hack.

Setting this up was super quick and simple. Probably asking a lot, just wish the knobs weren't plastic and that the cables had a way to hide better, but the magnetic plates are pretty cool. I had considered that $400 boom arm you mentioned but the size of the base mounting plate thing seems a lot more aggressive in terms of desk real estate, so I opted for the elgato.

Great comparison Tom. Speaking of that Ball Mount on the Elgato, it's the same as on their Flex Arm (4 components-arms), the Solid Arm as well as the Master Mount. In real use, we can prolong the Low Profile Arm with one of the modules from the Flex Arm if needed. I've got them all and they're as sturdy as they should be. But the Arm is out of stock here..

I just got my mic arm and noticed there may have been a slight design change. The model I received has thumb screw can be tightened by hand instead of a socket head cap screw (adjustable with allen key). I have to really tighten the screw to the point where it's very hard to unscrew it for the top arm to stay up. I have a rode pod mic attached to it and any adjustments to the top arm will make the mic fall and I have to retighten the thumb screw.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
I saw that the newer models have this update. It seems like a nice idea, but not if it makes it tougher to adjust the arm. The Allen key method is inconvenient, but SUPER sturdy.

Yeaaa my main complaint about the Elgato LP are the magnetic parts to hide the cable. I mostly just add some extra slack on the cable to hopefully prevent that. I mostly love how easy it is to move it out of the way so I’m ok dealing with that. Stellar review as always. Thanks Tom!

I'm a big fan of Elgato products in general. I have their green screen and the stand that clamps to a desk to hold a camera and the products are just very sturdy and work well. I may look into this arm when it comes back into stock. Still rocking the blue mic arm, which despite its shortcomings with getting it stay up (I tightened it up super duper tight, which I think it's working better now) I always thought it had the BEST cable management with those snap clips in the arm. Great vid!!

This was super helpful! Thanks, Tom! I am on Zoom calls a good portion of the day, both presenting and attending. I came from a Rode PSA1 mounted at the edge of my desk that is away from me, to the left of my display. This worked well. I am now using the Elgato low profile mounted at the edge of my desk that is to my right. I like how the arm can be stored out of the way to my right when not in use. I can also easily move it in place when I need it. As you mentioned, the Elgato is more flexible in how it lets you position your mic. I have a Shure Beta 87 on it at the moment. I can position the arm up when I also need use of my keyboard. But I’ll use an Audio Technica BPHS1 headset mic if I need use of my keyboard or if I’m drawing on my iPad.

Hello Tom, Those 1/4 x20 mounts are not microphone but rather camera oriented. Since that is the smallest mounting screw using the enlarging adaptations make these arms universally adaptable. From cameras to studio microphone mounting these are able to fit all. Mounting a camera on one of these booms can be very useful for desk top closeup and assembly demonstrations. Perhaps that is why the springs can be adjusted so strong to support an SLR.

Hey Tom, thanks for this.... I'm coming to it late, but still great info. I've had a Rode PSA1 which gets the job done, but never a low profile arm. Since my needs have changed low profile makes sense -- since it tucks away so easy. This is the case when you are only doing occasional voice sessions. I didn't know the Elgato existed and was facing going way more expensive....and dragging my feet. So thanks again.

I got the Gator Framework (based on your other comparison vdo) and agree with you on the clamp. They missed the sweet spot by weighing it outside the desk area of the clamp position. I’ll have to mount it on the desk now with nails for better sturdiness.

I actually picked up one of these not that long ago. At first I was worried that it would be more in the way with the one position lower arm. But i discovered that its low enough to move under my monitor so I was able to mount it from the back of my desk and was able to swing the other arm in front of in use or away and parallel with my computer case when I want it out of the way! So everything worked out. Also I found that if you do a lose extra coil of your cable on the mic end of the arm it will keep the plates from popping off when you move your mic.

It can definitely support a U87, but with a mic at that level, it might really be worth saving up for a beefier arm just to be safe. I'm not worried about it at all, but I would hate if anything happened to such a nice mic.

Awesome Review! Fair enough about the magnetic cable cover, a zip tie probably is needed but elgato should fix this. Re traditional boom arm has the same problem of getting in the way if it's positioned too low, so yes it's really all about positioning but in fairness a LP starts of low so more likely to get in the way quicker without adjusting it 9:26 however one huge advantage is that you can go further back beyond the table mount point which a traditional one can't do at all! Big win.

I think this can happen sometimes if they get dried out. You can use a very very small amount of WD-40 Lubricant to get it going again. Not regular WD-40, but the one that specifically says "lubricant" on the label. Regular WD-40 will make things worse.
