Dude! I made a drunk purchase of a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 about 6 years ago and I regularly thank myself for it. That lens has taken some amazing photos over the years. I didn’t “need” it at the time but now I love it.

I think what you mentioned about how believing that wider focal lengths were the way to go, then learning to love tighter focal lengths later - goes the other way too. I was always in the school of thought that longer focal lengths and the compression you get from it made everything prettier, but then as of recently, I've learned to appreciate the perspective warping of wider lenses. Going too tight in focal length prevented me from learning how to compose with leading perspective lines other skills i wouldn't have otherwise learned when shooting longer focal lengths only.
@tombuck

I agree 100%. It's a big reason why I still recommend people get a "kit lens" when starting out with cameras. It's usually a good way to learn a bit about your own shooting style and then you can decide what you need more/less of as time goes on.

I cut my portrait teeth by experimenting with f.1.8 - f.5.6 because a lot depends on the subject and the environment. In the studio I would test having the background closer or further away and trying to find that sweet spot. I did this with the Mannequin Head, no model or client would've survived this... Many portraits were made with higher f stops to make more of the head appear in focus. It's seldom that I really liked the f.1.8 in the traditional client portraiture. It's another thing when I'm doing more creative stuff. But the versatility of the 85mm is fantastic.

get a 56mm, since you're on a crop sensor, the 56mm gives a similar field of view to an 85mm

Yeah, I went for the cheaper 85mm some time back. And I think you're right, the 85mm is a great balance of focal lengths. I got the Sony 135mm and often have to look for an excuse to use it, as I often end up going to the 85mm. When you mentioned the way your 85mm focuses, it made me feel better about my purchase decision. I saw in a few KZfaq videos that the "cheap" 85mm from Sony focuses the quickest. But glad you were able to make it work for that special image quality you mentioned. My favorite lens from Sony right now is the 50mm 1.2.

5:41 You're wrong, Tom. If you crop the 24mm image to give the same field of view, the DOF will be the same. The *perceived* DOF from the wider lens is greater, because you frame things differently, and the relative distances between near and far objects in the image are different (as you demonstrated in the next bit).

Great video Tom. I've bought the Sony 85mm f.1.8 for portrait photography and was thinking of getting the 50mm as well, but I managed it all with the 85mm. Lately I've used it in a client video - for the exact same phenomenon you're describing - the background seems closer. Instead of the 35mm prime that I'd usually put on, I took the 85mm... Since we were in a corridor that had at least 15 meters behind the subject, the lens and the camera setup gave us quite nice visual appeal of that (boring) background.

@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
That would've been a great comparison! I just don't have a 2.8 on hand to try it right now. Speaking form experience, it'll definitely look better than f4, but there's still a pretty big difference between 2.8 and 1.8. I've used some super nice 70-200 lenses and they're truly fantastic. But the dedicated 85 is on another level for this specific focal length. If you don't plan to use it too often, I think a 70-200 zoom could fit the bill quite nicely, but if you plan to use 85mm often, then a dedicated lens is the way to go.

Thanks for sticking around so long! And yes the 135 is definitely something I'd love to have at some point. I think the reason I opted for the 85 is that, currently, 135 would be just a bit too tight in a lot of situations for me.

For me it was a 105mm. Had 35 and 50 - which is basically all I needed but I wanted a third, longer lens for headshots and/or background obliteration. Went to my local camera store and I tried an 85mm 1.4, 105mm 1.4, 135 1.8 and 300mm f2.8... I ended up jumping between 85 and 105 but in the end decided for the 105 and haven't regret my decision since. I basically shoot exclusively with 35 and 105 nowadays. Haven't put my 50mm onto my camera for 2 years - not even once! Only 35 or 105!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
I love this. I think you hit on a really important point: you've got to go with what works for you. I might like 85mm, but 105 is better for you. Definitely important to test and try as much gear as possible when deciding.

As an antique camera builder and antique lens collector, I'd like to point out that the reason the Zeiss is better at f4 is that all lenses are not as good at their "limits" as they are stepping away from them. so the zoom lens is on its limits (f4) whereas the Zeiss is far away from its limits giving a far superior result. also, the Zeiss has superior optics than the f4 because it's easier and cheaper to make a prime lens than a zoom lens. so a good prime lens is always way better than a zoom lens in terms of quality. Great video once again.

Great video. I work with a few people who are obsessed with 85mm interview shots. I much prefer using a 50 or a 24. IMHO 50 gives that intimate feel without too much break from the backdrop or impressionist bokeh everything. 24 feels like a person or subject in their environment even when cranked to 1.4f. Just my preference. Keep the lens stuff coming. Give us a Macro lens video.

For my corporate work the 85 is king for interviews, because you don't have resources (time, money, crew) to be worrying about backgrounds. The small angle of view and shallow DOF at say f/2.8 or 3.5 mean you only need to find a small patch of background that's going to work, and you have a nice-looking interview with a non distracting background.
