@@batmansdad4978 There are a lot of places in the states that would absolutely shut this down by the city and definitely by anyone living in an HOA. Let us not forget that your insurance company can ask you to remove it for not insure you here in the good ole US of A. Now if you live in Bumfuck no where sure you can get away with whatever but there are a lot of towns and cities that would have issue. There is also the issue of attractive nuisance which is a whole nother can of worms. Let's not forget that Matt Jones & Sam Reynolds both have huge compounds in the UK too. You absolutely do inspire people. After 25 years of not riding, I got back into mountain biking this year. I first started watching your how to videos. Watching Kara learn helped me immensely. I am still working up to her level. I could go on and on but the videos you and Kara make (and Sam) are just incredible. So what did I do? I got a full squish Canyon and rode the local trail as much as I could. I have a rock garden and a few other small features in my yard and not long after I also bought a dirt jumper to practice tricks in my yard and to take to the pump track. I went to my first bike park last month and hit my first big jumps and doubles ever. I broke my hand that day - but not on a jump (washed out on a berm). But you know what? Things happen, I am feeling a lot better, and just went back to that park last week and rode it again (slower, with splints on). I cant wait to build a drop and maybe even a double in my back yard next spring. I'm 52 years old and having the most fun - and looking forward to learning how to jump with style and maybe (hopefully) even a trick or two. So much has changed - with the bikes, with the trails, and parks. I am going to get some coaching and cant wait to shred again in the spring. I just watched this video and it was sad. I feel bad this happened but you have such a great attitude. I just had to write and let you know how much your videos are appreciated and to thank Kara for being such a trooper and showing us how we can learn how to ride too.

Tom and Kara. My wife and I have been super encouraged by yall for years now, both on our bikes and in life generally. Y'all are a power couple. We also wish to offer you, like we did to Sam P, an offering of land. The land is in Kentucky however, but its 100+ acres. And you could build whatever you want man. Ain't nobody gonna say shit all to yeans. The general location is Morehead, KY if yalld be interested. We both race our mtbs in the Bluegrass Mountain Cup Series. I have a Trek Top Fuel 9.8 and my wife has Specialized Rockhopper. It would be unreal to hang with yall if you're ever in the states. My cousin has lived on the isle of man for about 7 years now. It never changes! I remember 35 years ago when our council shut down the only BMX track in the area due to cutbacks, so we all started using a small patch of woodland nearby. It was so overgrown and neglected it took us weeks to clear all the paths and when we finally cleared it, the council turned up one afternoon and cut trees down across the trails so we couldn't ride there anymore either. Then of course we ended up being constantly harassed by the police because the locals were complaining about all the kids doing wheelies and jumps in the street.... I may be wrong but wasn't there some sort of issue with another individual from our hobby who caused that problem with Sam's place? Is it possible that the same person is being very un-biker like this time too?

Would it be worth you (and Sam) getting some professional planning advice for a future project? There may be a workaround such as permitted development exclusions. Or, going down the planning permission route might not being as onerous as you think it is. Contacts at established bike parks might be able share their experience as well.

A joint venture with Sam to get a local spot that ticks EVERY box and no one can shut down. People will back the Kickstarter i'm sure. It always amazes me how councils stop places being built that would get kids off the street so to speak and into well run communal places, some council could make a fortune, they're just out of touch.

Alternative opinion: Maybe people like you and Sam should get together and actually start a public bike park? There are plenty of other people that could never have places like this to ride as they simply can't afford to even start it. So we're left with whatever we can get away with building in local woods, or travelling to the nearest bike park. In my case, my local is Leeds Urban, which is in DESPERATE need of some professional attention to redesign/repair it. Berm Peak is a great example of someone building something really awesome to give back to the biking community.

I don’t get it though, how come Windhill Bike is ok ? It’s on the grounds of Longleat ? I’m assuming that Longleat is open to the public so that includes the Windhill Bike park right ?

Time to buy some land in US. We are Crazy, and do what ever we want. Small towns, you can pretty much do what ever you want. PNW is so beautiful .

This is part of biking. Most of us that have built jumps or trails have experienced this at some point. We find new spots and rebuild something new. It is part of the fun to me now and a good way to get comfortable with failure and defeat without giving up. As an engineer I often have to deal with large infrastructure projects that I invest a lot of time, effort, and money get cancelled. Learning to cope with this at a young age has been very valuable to me and is not something you will learn in university classes.

It's just sad what happend to your compound... i really enjoyed the videos about it... but i think you'll find a way to keep things going 😅 i guess here in germany you would have had the same problems, but the solution for it would just be a fence around that piece of land to just let everybody know that its a private place

What’s the point of having your own land when you can’t use it for what you want. The uk has to work on this, seems to work way better in other countries.

Really true what you say about robbing the inspo from the younger gen.. Local councils / pen pushers seem to just want them sitting at home playing violent video games and/or stabbing each other in the streets.

Is it a similar case to Sam - the land is deemed to be being used for a business purpose (e.g. youtube) and thus it classifies as a change of land use? I know that a change in ground level of more than 300mm would need planning as it counts as engineering works - hsve come across this when trying to get a local pump track built on recreational land

You and Sam need to fight this. It seems absolutely ridiculous to me. I had a full on motocross track at my first house.

I was annoyed and saddened when I heard, watched Sam Pilgrim's garden jumps had to be demolished, the is just another level though. I dispair at the level of selfishness and how spiteful some people can be. I'm in my mid 50's and my moutain biking days are long gone, but I do enjoy the content yourself, Sam Pilgrim, Matt Jones and others put out. I truly hope you find a space somewhere and can rebuild bigger and better. Gan canny.

Don't let your MTB days be gone mate. Get back on the bike! (and yeah Colchester Council have no idea of the level of engagement that Tom or Sam have internationally within the biking community; something does need to be done).
