Hi Derek, (watching this video after you mentioned to me previously about checking other appliances, yep knowledge is power/safety) at your 13 minute bit, it shows that the PEB should be within 600mm of the meter or before first T (this is the same as taught on the course and fairly simple), I have been looking at this in various other booklets, some say 'preferably' and some say, anywhere on the pipe if it it continuous metal. Best practise would be 600mm or before T, but I have seen on quite a few installs the PEB on the pipework just before it gets to the boiler. Is any of this wrong, or is it down to the Engineer at the time (with maybe a label at the meter indicating where the PEB is )?
@tomkatgastraining
@tomkatgastraining 3 жыл бұрын
As you say it should be within 600mm of the meter or before the 1st tee this is to give the engineers maximum protection from stray voltage and you can see it is bonded. If on bonding present you notify the responsible person of no earth bonding
@davidb2464
@davidb2464 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomkatgastraining Hi Derek, in the Electrical bibles, they say that within 600mm of the meter is 'acceptable', but within 600mm of it entering the building is 'preferred', but seems everyone is of the same opinion that it SHOULD be before any T. Just don't want to get anything wrong before my upcoming probationer assessment (I'm hoping to enjoy the experience, from what other people have said).

If a gas restrictor elbow on a gas fire installation was found turned off (ie screwed all the way in), but missing gas fire and the accompanying pipe work with no cap end on the elbow, how would you class this? Likewise, what if it was on cooker bayonet with missing hose. Thanks
@tomkatgastraining

Ibrahim Ali the fire is ID but a cooker bayonet is not classed as an open end because it’s self closing thanks for watching

Hello there are situations where a main bond is not required from an electrical point of view for various electrical reasons earthing systems and others ,so there would be conflict if a gas engineer just kept saying it should be there....
@tomkatgastraining
@tomkatgastraining 3 жыл бұрын
We require earth incase of a stray currents which could cause a spark and an explosion. This point is also the reason we use a non contact voltage indicator to make sure it’s safe to touch because electrical regs say it’s not needed
@MrPowellfactor
@MrPowellfactor 3 жыл бұрын
If there is no potential to earth there would be no spark..eg plastic incoming gas main, this would be confirmed with a test by the electrician on installation..I'm just saying it's quite possible for a gas engineer to find no bonding because a qualified electrical engineer has followed bs7671 and quite rightly determined one is not required....
@tomkatgastraining
@tomkatgastraining 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrPowellfactor we have to follow our regs and gas safe technical bulletins which says if we find no earth we report it to a responsible person and leave a notice that’s why we as gas engineers go on about it even if sparks say it’s not needed. I have had 2 really bad electric shocks through no earth on a gas pipe and one of the incidents was investigated by the HSE so when you say it’s not needed I personally think it is.
@MrPowellfactor
@MrPowellfactor 3 жыл бұрын
Well sorry to here of your shocks , all I'm saying there are circumstances where a main bond is not needed and fitting one may actually cause a potential issue..its not for a gas engineer or gas safe to categorically state one must be provided, more possibly to advise one may be needed and and I would agree usually is..my point is it's not always needed . .and it not me saying it it's the electrical regulations.
@tomkatgastraining
@tomkatgastraining 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrPowellfactor you also have to think that gas engineers have to cut into gas pipes which are copper and they use steel pipe cutters which are not plastic or rubber coated so this is what can cause the spark with stray voltage which could lead to an expansion. At the end of the day if every house in the U.K. had MCBs and RCDs it possibly not matter about the gas pipe being earthed but not every house does.
