Ceadeus is the final boss of Monster Hunter Tri, and I think he's pretty great. This video breaks down his design and inspiration to try and understand why he remains so compelling, all these years later.

I think repelling ceadeus also put the monster hunter guild's cannon philosophy about living in harmony with nature into the gameplay. You help the sea dragon with its pain and send it away without killing it, no lasting harm was done to either party. To me it really exemplifies what the guilds message means more than all the elder dragon culling in the other games.

to add with the Music of Ceadeus battle phase, its sung in a Bulgarian folklore choir style. Which was used in the Ghost in the Shell movie intro as well. this particular style of vocal arrangement really highlights the ancient, mysterious and beyond human aspect to the subject which fits really well with Ceadeus, because you get the feeling that, his existence precedes human time. a grand majestic creature who ,in happenstance, caused the settlers disturbances, but not in a predatory instinct type of way, but more in a greater cosmic being's actions unknowingly affecting lesser beings.

I didn’t realize it fully until randomly this video came up in my feed. I never wanted to stop or hate ceadeus, unlike other big fights at the end it didn’t feel malevolent at all. And the setting and music and design of the whole thing was phenomenal in retrospect.

I think it’s worth noting the cutscene where Ceadeus breaches and swims away as you and Cha-Cha return to Moga is called “Spoken of Forever”. Not to mention I love the (presumably) Wyverian lyrics that play both during the fight and during the final cutscene.

Ceadeus and Monster Hunter Tri is a great example of older Monster Hunter games which really tried their best to make compelling and beautiful tales and stories about people living in balance with nature. I didn’t play the game, but the story and underlying message it is trying to convey is really good and speaks to the underlying message that Monster Hunter as an idea and game series is trying to tell us the audience. Good job with this video, please do more. 🙂👍

@@desmondclubland4006 Agreed. Monster Hunter usually does have a good story to tell. It’s just that the plot isn’t always well executed or coherent, or the plot is just a predictable, cookie cutter format that is repeated over and over again and therefore easy to understand and predict. Throw that aside, take it out of the equation, and you just have the story and the main message that is trying to be told - which most of the time is pretty good. @khailils - There is a difference between a bad story and a bad plot.

Ceadeus' theme song is one of the very few video game OSTs, let alone the many fantastic ones within MH as a whole franchise, that gives me goosebumps. A phenomenally symbolic fight that makes you feel like you wish it was a full open world to explore all the ancient history - it was hard to fight Ceadeus sometimes (or abyssal lagiacrus) sometimes due to wanting to explore the arena

1:36 On the topic of octopus in monster hunter, there was an underwater rock formation in area 11 that I mistook for an octopus monster on my first playthrough of the game. Took me a lot of courage to get anywhere near it, I even tried using the monster journal function to see what I was looking at, but it wouldn't show anything when trying to select it. These might refer to the very ancient origins of the cetaceans we have in our oceans today... once I read of a primordial race of underwater beings originated in the constellation of the "Whale" (Cetus, in latin), specifically in planets around the stars of Kaffaljidhma (Gamma Ceti) and Baten-Kaitos (Zeta Ceti) who were the first genetical ancestors of the cetacean race that appeared in our galaxy and whose descendants eventually migrated or were implanted in the Sirius B star system by the "Galactic Farmers" or Life Seeders of our local universe. Since those ancient times, the prototypes of great whales and those huge sea monsters of cetacean lineage have been regarded as very loving, peaceful, wise beings... It is very interesting because in the new film "Avatar 2, the Way of Water" there is also depicted a race of huge horned cetaceans who cohabit harmoniously with the semi-aquatic navi (the turquoise blue, cat-like elven creatures particular to the Avatar Saga). thanks for the video, i loved knowing about Ceadeus!!

My first MH game was 3U. It always felt like the people in Moga were portrayed as having a very deep respect for nature and your hunts never felt like going on adventures and fighting these big monsters. It always felt like you were going out to either protect the village or be a mediator for the balance of nature and I think how the Ceadeus fight plays out was a really good representation of it.

Ceadeus was the first elder dragon i have ever hunted and slain, as monster hunter tri was my first ever monster hunter game. When the final phase of the fight started and the music started playing, I had only one thought for the entire fight: "This is it. Now or never" Also, the "Cea" in Ceadeus could very well stand for "Ceatatian", the latin name for whales and dolphins. This would make Ceadeus "the god of whales", which i think is the most badass name and title a underwater monster could have.

So, a note on pronunciation: "-deus" being clearly Latin in origin indicates possible Latin phonology. "C" in Latin typically makes a "k" sound. (To wit: "Julius Caesar" should actually be pronounced like, "Yulius Kaiser" in English, and is incidentally where the word "Kaiser" comes from to begin with.) Therefore, "Kay-ah-day-us" would likely be a much more accurate pronunciation. Not sure if this is what the devs intended, (I like to get in fights about how "Tiche" should be pronounced in Elden Ring, so what do I care?) but this seemingly what the word origin phonology is telling us it should sound like.

At first I was afraid of fighting a great Jaggi, like i saw Jurrasic Park recently and was scared as hell. Now I'm 21, and I still remember the music and boss fight. I've played a few Monster Hunter games before, namely World. Alatreon is great, and Fatalis was probably the toughest combat I've ever experienced in any game. But nothing have or will ever come close as the sheer wonder I felt against this godlike being. It's the perfect ending to the game and the perfect monster to me
