In this video, I explain the importance of keeping a low stance. The footage is taken from a real coaching session with a player called Stephenie.
She has been playing for around 6 months, so is still very much a beginner player. Her strokes are getting more consistent, so we are now giving more attention to her stance and footwork.
In the video I encourage Stephenie to keep her legs shoulder width apart, bend her knees and lean forwards. This makes her lower, brings the weight onto the front of her feet and enables her to move quicker.

Very good points . Also important is the bounce of the knees rather than bowing over the table . A lot of novice players think their stance is low whereas they are just hunching over the table and Nowhere more ready to hit or switch from forehand to backhand . Also she should basically swing her racket lower for forehand drives otherwise that also kills the purpose of generating good quality shots .

Great tips Tom. This is something that I have been improving on recently and amazing how much it affect your shots! Feels like I can hit the ball more forwards than upwards which not only generates more speed but also stops the ball from flying off the end of the table. Another major thing that I have been working on that could be a good video topic, is making sure to hit through the ball and perform the full length stroke on both the forehand and backhand topspin, rather than 'jabbing' the ball, and it's made all the difference to my game.

Great advice , at the time when I can stay low everything goes better , so easy to get upright and stuck without realising and then it’s usually too late !

I actually commented on your another video (the one you had a match with someone) about this, it's glad to see that you are advising such a core thing to do.

I was playing amateur table tennis in a very low division about 20 years ago. After watching your videos, I realize why I never moved up, lol.

Funny to see Tom is out of breath after the exercise while Stephenie isn't. Good advice as always.

You don’t actually want to have a stance that low especially if you are a shorter player, the ideal stance is the knees only a little bit bent while leaning forward, if you are to far down you cannot create any power and you have less control, this is what my coach told me and he is playing proffesionaly in polish leauge and is Sri Lankan no.2

I have to admit, that I am overweight, so I need to apply limits to my acceleration, when changing speed and directions with my footwork in order to avoid too much burden on my knees. Still, I am going to loose weight, as when I move enough, I can feel its benefits in a better ability to execute my shots (controlling the ball hit direction and the applied spin) in response to the incoming ball, and in a better variety of shots to choose from.

I find that when I force myself to do a wider stance, I wont have to lean so much over the table and strain my back to get lower. this is something I did a lot of at the start. I am 187 cm in height.
